John often followed Jimmy Pages guitar and would take the riff and make it his drum part for the song.. This is very unusual for a drummer who is usually locked in with the bassist holding down the beat or helping to move it around. And creating that solid foundation for the guitars and vocals. And often a very busy drummer flying around the drum kit playing both rhythm and lead parts just like Page and sometimes both at once! Page's guitar playing is the inspiration behind a lot of the very complex drum parts and solos on Led Zep songs. The triplet patterns John is known for is heavily influenced by drummer Joe Morello who is best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Also played in unusual time signatures. And John Bonham had about the best drum sound in the studio and live on a stage. .
That's how I learned to write drum parts - following the guitar. I thought that was normal until I got more experience. I always felt like, "Hey, it's the bass players job to keep up with us, right?!" Guys like Bonham, Keith Moon, John Densmore, and Mitch Mitchell all gave me the impression that you have all this room to work with in the space between notes. I've come to realize there's still a great amount of discipline and discretion in their playing, but boy, did it make my young mind explode when I was 12 years old! Great comment, man! To Sunlion Indeed. You are correct, Bonzo followed Pagey. If he hadn't Zep would have just been an ordinary band. He had big ears and ensured the musical conversation rose to a much higher level and would definitely never be forgotten. Master musicians tuned in to each other. One of my favorite drum sounds[check the floor toms], is Thank You. No one had such a huge warm sound until Zep showed up. I'm in Toronto and I just heard on university radio that Zep is tops in that world. Timeless stuff. Guess the emo thing expired.

I've never seen your videos before. I am 64 years old and come from New York City so I sort Zeppelin 19 or 20 times. Three or four of those times I was right behind John Bonham in the sheets going around. I got a career out of learning how to play like that. having said that, I saw most of the great drummers from that Bearer. John Bonham is the scariest drummer I've ever seen. He defied laws of physics, do things. Absolutely not possible. I know you've seen the 71 or 72 solo and when he does the final triplets so fast that you can't see his arms, a couple of times he put up his arm twirling stick and used his foot as an arm and keeping up that incredible blinding speed the triplets kept coming with one arm up in the air. meaning he was doing it with his left arm and hand and his foot which is the fastest foot I've ever seen on a human being. no matter which drum set he played on it always sounded like John Bonham. it was truly a frightening thing to see. a lot of drummers white really speed players like Carl Palmer. So they did not understand what Bonham was really doing. he had Swagger and swing like Elvin Jones or Tony Williams, and he had a great feel for any song period. Play the Crunge you hear James Brown in 7/4. Put on hot dog and he becomes the best country drummer you've ever heard. but when it came to being the engine John Bonham was a one-off. we shall never see his like again. I didn't have any videos to watch just the records and live performances but I got pigs at every audition I ever went on because I did a fair imitation of John Bonham. same for Joey Kramer from Aerosmith as he told me so. so good for you for explaining how beautiful John's work is. Good luck son keep it up.

Bonham could play anything and play it great with swing, incredible time, and the power that no other drummer can you even get close broke my heart when he passed. Robert Plant did the right thing no John Bonham no Led Zeppelin. He was completely Irreplaceable. At least we can always listen to him that's what you said we are brothers in drums
I really appreciate you saying that, Tim! It's certainly a worry I have - describing some of these parts without any education in the technical part of things. It's certainly something I need to remedy. However, I know there are plenty of people out there that don't have any formal education in music, so if it's more accessible to the masses, then I'm happy. Very good guide to play the strokes perfectly! Actually, they seem a lot easier than they really are when you play them, since it takes a lot of practice to get them to sound right!
They are definitely the epitome of simple but not easy. I still struggle with them sometimes. But it's also a blast when you lock into a great cadence with this one, because it feels like each limb is like a battering ram that gets heavier and heavier.

Man, every new vid is better than the last, There a quite a few Bonham pages, but you have the title, and it’s not even close. I’ve been messing around with this fill for a minute now, but after watching your tutorial, I got it right away. What else is cool with this fill, is it’s linear. The one he did later in his career, with the 2 tom hits, ends up being a L lead 5 stroke roll, between snare, tom, and bass, and felt it instantly. I started messing around with different voicings, and tempo, and ya have some cool funk stuff happening. I’m just getting my sound right for an eventual page, and I’m psyched. Recording myself has been an amazing tool. Anyway, you’re right. This might be the coolest, Bonham signature lick. Thanks you!

Thank you Derek it was an unforgettable experience that’s for sure, I never had the chance to see the Thermogloss kit but did get to see the green sparkle in 71 and the Vistas for the last three shows. If you ever get the time the audio of my final LZ show 3/5/75 in on RUclips as well as the 8/22/71 and the 6/28/72 shows although the audio is not the best and there are a few tracks from the 1973 show in Albuquerque but I have not found the entire concert, anyway as far as you honoring Bonham every video Iv ever seen of you playing the drums weather from you studio or with the band you have done exactly that a 100 times over.
I'm 61 yrs. old and Bonham has been my Favorite since I was a kid just learning drums. Just started playing again after a long time off and Really enjoying your vids! All these years I've been actually just faking my way through a lot of Bonham stuff using my double bass but now I'm really trying to learn the Right way. Thanks!

The snare was the best tuned snare in the world as it was the 1973 style which melts my heart I would like to see a video by u in which u tune this snare drum like the 1973 style and I would also love to see a video only by u to tune snare drum like 1979 which was used on stainless steel kit Tqs so much I love watching your videos especially during the Online Classes lol 😂🤣 Bye

It's always great hearing from you, Martin! It's funny - growing up listening to Zeppelin, I've always based what I play on the drums around the guitar and trying to lock in there, as opposed to syncing up with the bass. Hey, it's the bass player job to follow along with us, right?! It certainly shaped the way I came up with drum parts though. I also loved the way John Densmore from The Doors played off the vocals. Ultimately, you learn to pull from whatever is necessary to make the best song, but I think it's nice to share in what seems to be a slightly unorthodox approach to composing. I'll have plenty more coming your way soon, my friend!

i appreciate you doing it as a triplet. most drummers go for the quad. it's become sort of a pet peeve of mine for no legitimate reason. "just 'cuz", i guess.
It shall be done! I plan on doing videos about the Rock and Roll drum solos as they evolved throughout Bonham's career. I'll try and get those going sooner than later!
If I remember correctly the the fast rolls you hear in the centre are called "Herta" they are a form of triplet with an unusual sticking "snare, rack tom, floor tom, bass" RLRK" but the feel is "RLR K" there is a pause between kick and snare, there are 6 of these rolls folled by standard triplet feel, on the outro there is a definate ending he reverses sticking between the floor and rack, is hard to explain it, @kick it like bonham may be able to, as for me that's the general feel, the tricky parts are the hertas, and reverse triplet sticking lol
@@Boofy-mg7eh there was not a Lot of footage on Bonhams foot work so is guess work lol, but will def have a suss on your theory, prob be easier than the way I know haha,
I keep it pretty loose - only a couple full twists on each side, but still pretty close to being flush with the ground. There's a little trade-off in having it feel just a little more sluggish, but I find i have more overall control with it like that (I've definitely tried varying it a bit, depending on how I'm feeling physically).
A mention of the actual timing would have helped in adapting this to other stuff. The lick (I think) is a 16th with the left followed by a 16th note triplet of L R K. The whole thing takes up 3 16th notes all in all. This means for the double right or kick to fit in they need to be 32nd notes within the triplet.

Great fills..more important is to engage in Bonhams syncopated swing feel..that many rock drummer s dont get..because time keeping can be stiff..the flow is where the magic is...

Man, every new vid is better than the last, There a quite a few Bonham pages, but you have the title, and it’s not even close. I’ve been messing around with this fill for a minute now, but after watching your tutorial, I got it right away. What else is cool with this fill, is it’s linear. The one he did later in his career, with the 2 tom hits, ends up being a L lead 5 stroke roll, between snare, tom, and bass, and felt it instantly. I started messing around with different voicings, and tempo, and ya have some cool funk stuff happening. I’m just getting my sound right for an eventual page, and I’m psyched. Recording myself has been an amazing tool. Anyway, you’re right. This might be the coolest, Bonham signature lick. Thanks you!

Kick It Like Bonham Lol, I wouldn’t say I have this, or any fill down. Thanks to you, and this vid, I can execute it, and even apply it to tunes I’d never have thought it would have went with. It takes me a bit before a massive fill like this will start showing up in my day to day playing, w/out thinking. The double FT stroke version of this fill got me to feel it (finally). Thank you Derek it was an unforgettable experience that’s for sure, I never had the chance to see the Thermogloss kit but did get to see the green sparkle in 71 and the Vistas for the last three shows. If you ever get the time the audio of my final LZ show 3/5/75 in on RUclips as well as the 8/22/71 and the 6/28/72 shows although the audio is not the best and there are a few tracks from the 1973 show in Albuquerque but I have not found the entire concert, anyway as far as you honoring Bonham every video Iv ever seen of you playing the drums weather from you studio or with the band you have done exactly that a 100 times over.

I'm 61 yrs. old and Bonham has been my Favorite since I was a kid just learning drums. Just started playing again after a long time off and Really enjoying your vids! All these years I've been actually just faking my way through a lot of Bonham stuff using my double bass but now I'm really trying to learn the Right way. Thanks!

Even though I'm a Guitarist, ever since I started playing when I was 12, absolutely everything I have ever played, or written, has been influenced by his drumming. So videos like this, I can watch for hours and hours. Good on ya! Keep rocking!
It's always great hearing from you, Martin! It's funny - growing up listening to Zeppelin, I've always based what I play on the drums around the guitar and trying to lock in there, as opposed to syncing up with the bass. Hey, it's the bass player job to follow along with us, right?! It certainly shaped the way I came up with drum parts though. I also loved the way John Densmore from The Doors played off the vocals. Ultimately, you learn to pull from whatever is necessary to make the best song, but I think it's nice to share in what seems to be a slightly unorthodox approach to composing.

I wish I had enough formal training to do so, but I'd need to spend the time to learn proper notation. I'll never say, "never," in that regard, but I fear it may not be anytime too soon. However, if I do come across something for this part, I'll do my best to respond again to your comment here...
i appreciate you doing it as a triplet. most drummers go for the quad. it's become sort of a pet peeve of mine for no legitimate reason. "just 'cuz", i guess.

It shall be done! I plan on doing videos about the Rock and Roll drum solos as they evolved throughout Bonham's career. I'll try and get those going sooner than later!
If I remember correctly the the fast rolls you hear in the centre are called "Herta" they are a form of triplet with an unusual sticking "snare, rack tom, floor tom, bass" RLRK" but the feel is "RLR K" there is a pause between kick and snare, there are 6 of these rolls folled by standard triplet feel, on the outro there is a definate ending he reverses sticking between the floor and rack, is hard to explain it, @kick it like bonham may be able to, as for me that's the general feel, the tricky parts are the hertas, and reverse triplet sticking lol

What level of tension do you use on the speed king?
I keep it pretty loose - only a couple full twists on each side, but still pretty close to being flush with the ground. There's a little trade-off in having it feel just a little more sluggish, but I find i have more overall control with it like that (I've definitely tried varying it a bit, depending on how I'm feeling physically).

A mention of the actual timing would have helped in adapting this to other stuff. The lick (I think) is a 16th with the left followed by a 16th note triplet of L R K. The whole thing takes up 3 16th notes all in all. This means for the double right or kick to fit in they need to be 32nd notes within the triplet.

Hey man, I play the drums my self and I always wonder dose bonham use a speed king drum pedal to the the kick drum sound like the pedal is bouncing off the drum or is it the toms thats making the sound like that it sounds like it bouncing
I think it depends on what song you're referring to. I think it could be both. Is there a particular song you're thinking of?

@@KickItLikeBonham ,keep it up mate, I have watched and downloaded your tracks to analyze some of the beats, but this video was inspirational and direct with easy to follow points on sticking to get the feel and precision needed to play Led Zeppelin, we all know Bonham isn't the easiest percussionist/drummer to follow, I'm glad I am able to read notation which helps, in most cases, but not with bonham, he's hard to work out lol, I would love to keep seeing you produce these functional vids

Great fills..more important is to engage in Bonhams syncopated swing feel..that many rock drummer s dont get..because time keeping can be stiff..the flow is where the magic is...
