This movie is 23 years old and hasn't lost any of it's relevance. That either means that the movie is incredibly well made or that we haven't fixed any problems in the workforce in nearly quarter of a century.

I largely agree although its kind of funny Google started a new trend (not all companies have adopted) removing cubical walls in favor of an open plan. The idea is that you can't do unrelated work activities or just not work because everyone can see one another. However studies have shown that without walls people have difficulty concentrating on their work co-workers distract one another socializing.
There are the universal truisms in corporate work: meaningless repetitive jobs, the people who work the hardest at the bottom are the ones most likely to be laid off or replaced by cheaper labor force in another country, upper management gets paid disproportionate salaries, they often squeeze the people below them to justify their higher pay, corporate double speak (firing = layoff or down sizing), working in close proximity to annoying people, etc

It hasn't lost any relevance because nothing relevant about work has changed in the last 23 years. It's still a forced, crappy arrangement that benefits employers far more than employees.

I worked at a videostore at the time when this came out. Me and my boss set up as a christmas party number an reenact of this printer destruction. Because we had the matrix printer from hell, and it drove everybody mad. So at the christmas party we played the same song as in this movie and everyone got to vent out some rage on that printer. Swingline did not make a red stapler. The company lent their name to the movie but they only made staplers in black, gray and blue. To make the stapler "Pop" on the screen the production crew altered the shape of a normal stapler and painted it red. After this movie came out there was such a demand for red Swingline staplers they had to start making them. Swingline calls it Rio Red and every new employee gets one on their first day at work. Money laundering means moving stolen, aka "dirty" money through some financial transactions in order to exchange it for "clean" legal money.
A simple example would be if you counterfeited a $100 bill, then took it to a gas station and used it to purchase something inexpensive like a candy bar. You would then get a candy bar and $98 in legitimate legal tender. That is one example of money laundering.

Like you open the store for the day with stolen money in the register, then by the end of the day you've given that out as change and taken in not-stolen money from the customers.

    Gotta admit, im a Milton...
First work place... we had 2 Lumbergh of sorts, One was an old woman nearing retirement was always on my case and often used me as a dogs body simply because I was the new young guy among older employees, shes probably dead now given her age... second one was a guy who used to work along side us, was a nice guy who actually bothered to talk to me... then he became middle management, completely changed into a Lumbergh to the point even the older employees started to dislike him (even the other Lumbergh started to get uptight with him), he quickly moved to another branch though but heard a few stories about him at the new place over the years, non of them good.
Never did 'burn down the place', while im a Milton id never go that far (or i was never pushed far enough).
Great thing about Office Space is, regardless of where you work, someone from the movie will be known to you... could even be you yourself.

Swingline started making a red stapler. TGI Fridays lifted their flair requirements. I've worked in several places where "The Bob's" was shorthand for going into a meeting that may be your last.

In my country the employer would rather crawl through broken glass than have you come in on a Sunday.
They're forced by law to pay you 300% if you work on any red day.
If you're asked to work a Sunday it because they REALLY need you to.
You can still say no and they're not allowed to fire you, but no one ever says no...
Who would turn down 3 days pay for for 8 hours or work.
    Working Saturday is 170-200% pay.
It's not uncommon to work Saturdays but just like with Sundays, alot of people want to work those days for the easy money so there is always someone to do it should someone else turn it down

I went through this at a company...the "efficiency experts" talked to NONE of the actual workers and came up with a garbage system that actually reduced productivity. I got kicked up to a supervisory position and they opened a brand new, costly building...again without speaking to any actual employees who did the work. So we were immediately unprofitable and it led to everyone being "promoted to customer" over the course of about eight years.

Another classic. EVERYONE who has ever worked in an office environment (especially in the IT or related fields) will relate.
This was actually based on a series of animated sketches on SNL, featuring Milton (who was the main character) and a proto-Lumbergh.
The irony is that Initech causes all of its own problems. IE all the people they lay off are the reason why they need other employees to work overtime in the first place, etc.
Re Milton: I actually had a company that simply stopped putting me on the schedule. Literally nobody told me I was laid off or anything. My name was literally just removed from the schedule altogether.

The software industry became plagued with uncreative parasites ("little Mommies") pushing TPS Reports on the workers they were tasked with turning into armies of soulless drones. I think it started with attempts to use more and more (cheaper and cheaper) workers trained to follow scripts outlining mindless repetitive processes ("Project Management"). This had in turn come about because the need for software was increasing while the number of talented computer programmers had hit some absolute natural limit by around 1980. It's like any other human activity built around exceptional talents, such as competitive professional athletics. It can only be scaled up just so far.

I think that "natural limit" started to climb after the '90s internet bubble (when everyone saw just how successful programmers could become), and even more since then with the rise of nerd culture. Kids aren't afraid to be geeks anymore.

The attitudes of the office personnel are just spot on and so relatable. I know many times I wish I would have cleaned a fish at work just to be terrible to the place that made me feel so terrible. I love this movie on so many levels! Thank you for reacting to it.

jasper1999: May I ask you a couple questions?
Why did you feel terrible at work? Was it the Job, the People, the Upper Level (supervisors, leads, managers), or something else?
What industry were you in? Was it what you wanted to do? Did you get a degree to be in that industry and if so, why did you decide to choose that industry?

@@LA_HA - How to put this... I was tapped for a job in disaster assistance and left teaching to do it. Many disasters later the physical, mental, and emotional strain leaving me with a degenerative condition, wheelchair-bound, PTSD, and depression. I was retired and do online tutorials. This is leaving out a lot more but I guess that sums up the major stuff. I hope that helps answer your questions to a limited degree. I apologize if I can not go further into it but it gets too personal for the comments section.

@@jaspr1999 Thank you for your time and response. Of course, I didn't want to get too personal and just wanted a general idea. I do research and sometimes, I'm very curious about what people think about specific things. The current work force and how people think about it is one of the things I'm interested in looking at.
Again, I thank you for your help. I appreciate it very much, and hope things are much better for you. Be well

@@jaspr1999 My forte is education, but over the past few years, I've been looking a little into how work, the workplace, and workers are all affected by the transfer from educational institutions to work institutions. There's such a big shift in how people view work now (vs in the recent past) that I'm curious about what shapes these attitudes.
Preliminary observations seem to be that young adults aren't really prepared by any structure to deal with being a functioning adult. They're simply not being taught how to do or think about these things, so they tend to have a skewed view of the real world and how it turns. There's a lot that indicates the future is going to be quite hard for some, and I want to understand why, how, and who will be most affected.
But, again, it's very preliminary and not based on anything expansive at this time. I'm kinda digging into other subjects that are affecting educational curriculums right now.
However, if I decide to move further into this area, I'll try to remember to come back and link you up

You should listen to the parody song "My Cubicle", which is a parody of the song "You're Beautiful". the parody song is a great follow up after watching this movie, and we've all felt like the people in this movie or the song if we've ever spent any time in the cube farm, egg crate office environment.

Sadly this movie came out very close to Star Wars: Episode I, which completely dominated the summer of 1999. And to think, the unwatchable remake of The Haunting was a bigger box office success than this gem. Que disfrutes y Feliz Semana Santa querida Duaffy!

For example people being in a zoom call and leaving the camera on their phone while going to the restroom...yeah, look that one up on youtube.

Check out that banal corporate statue in front of the Initech building at the beginning of the movie. It's a square peg in a round hole, but it also looks like someone giving the middle finger. Subtle foreshadowing!
