As a child of the 80s, I can attest that a lot of the more adult humour just goes over your head at the time. Its one of the great things about this film, though. The older you get, the more "new" jokes you get out of it. For instance, its not just the more smutty stuff that you miss, but the real deadpan stuff like how Egon and Peter and trying to haggle with the realtor and Ray ruins it all with his excited attitude (and being the one actually holding the money). Or the "they're very discreet," before they tear out the building in Ecto-1 with lights and sirens blazing. It was also funny when you realise things before your other friends, too. I remember having a slightly younger friend and he didn't believe me when I said I'd just worked out how the whole keymaster and gatekeeper did the "unlocking." He was convinced it was just the kiss and that was it. Its funny how naive you are about such things when you're a kid! Its like how I used to think that James Bond just lay in bed with women and kissed a bit!
I can't remember how many times I saw this in theaters (not an excessive amount), and on pay-channels (HBO or Showtime, whichever it was on) followed by VHS. So many older references... but it is still entertaining for the younger crowd, thank goodness.
I was 7-8. I didn't get any of the obvious sex jokes. keymaster/gatekeeper... lol I just know the library ghost scared the pants off me. But other than that I enjoyed the film. My mother took me to see this and she didn't take my brother or my sister (they were younger obviously). It was of my fondest memories with my mother, she died a couple of years back and whenever I watch this I think of her.
The 80s were actually kinda dopey, lol, The 70s were way cooler, and I say this as a member of class of '87. I thought this was ok at the time, not the funniest thing any of those guys had ever done. It's fun. Not anywhere near the best comedy I saw in the 80s, though.

We didn't know who we were, we expanded on the worst fashion ideas of the 60s, it was the era of the "disaster movie" which matched the general attitude that the world was over. About like the 2020s are going to be. Let's not forget the "gas crisis" and "national malaise". The 80s were the best decade since the 1940s; possibly since the 1920s.

The Green Ghost (aka Onionhead aka Slimer) was an homage to John Belushi who was one of the actors who was supposed to be in this movie but he passed away before it could be filmed.

1. The reason Egon would want to drill a hole in his head is because of a medieval medical practice called trepanning in which a hole is drilled into the skull to "release pressure." Trepanning can, according to some occult theories, lead to the development of psychic powers, visions, etc. 2. The reason Venkman ask the librarian if she's been menstruating is because parapsychologists have noted that poltergeists and spirit activity often coincide with the onset of menstruation in teenage girls. Dan Aykroyd, who plays Ray, is a serious believer in the paranormal and wrote the script. He wanted all of the technobabble that the Ghostbusters engage in to be based on real parapsychological theories. Everything Venkman is asking the librarian is what real parapsychologists would ask.

When the movie hit the theaters nobody considered it a horror film. It was a comedy, starring some well known comedians of the time: Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis. That little green blob is named "Slimer" and in the animated series was a part of the team. I believe the crossing of the streams at the end wasn't to destroy Gozer as much as close the Gateway. What makes the Stay Puff scene funny was because Ray did choose the safest thing he knew from his childhood. It just turned out to be a 50ft version of it. Seeing a giant marshmallow man walking through New York is hilarious.
Duaffy qualified that by saying that Venkman wasn’t physically attractive. Truthfully, I have an easier time believing in ghosts than in a world where a guy that looks like could land Sigourney Weaver. Confident, funny and persistent can only get you so far…
Hi! Original generation Ghosthead here. Let me see if I can answer a couple of your queries. Total protonic reversal. It essentially meant that by crossing the streams it could potentially destroy everything on a molecular level. So, they fired into the pocket dimension accessed by the gateway and basically destroyed it. As for how the equipment works, it generates beams of positronic energy that electrostatically traps the negatively charged energy of supernatural entities. They do run on nuclear energy to generate the sufficient energy required. Their packs are basically miniature nuclear accelerators that create the reactions needed to generate the power and create the streams. And, I'm sure as most things that deal with radiation, the packs are probably lead-lined. Anyway, it's pseudo-science that doesn't have to make 100% sense, just has to seem plausible enough within the context of the film. As for kid-friendly, no, the original movie was decidedly not. It was an 80s comedy and was made accordingly, just not approaching the level of raunch many at the time did. The kid audience came because, well, it's blasting ghosts with cool lasers. Who WOULDN'T like that? The studio learned about the massive kid audience and made THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS cartoon in 1986. Then the 1989 sequel film was sufficiently watered down for that audience as well. Fewer curses, no smoking, no ghostly blowjobs.

Louis Tully isn't a stalker. He's just socially awkward and lonely. Calling a woman a dog is old American slang for saying she's unattractive. When a guy showed an unattractive or plain date to his friends, he would say "So, she's a dog." Only Venkman meant it literally this time. :) Venkman has a degree, but he's more con man than scientist. His deadpan disbelief in the paranormal added a comic element, while he was the one who thought of commercializing the process. "What if it happened today?" Ghostbusters: Afterlife is coming out the last week of November. Everyone but Egon will be back, at least for cameos. The teaser trailer is online.
The technical stuff in this film is really just entertaining gibberish. You're not meant to think about it too much. However, the rules are pretty consistent. The apartment building attracts psychokinetic energy, which allows the ghosts to appear. The Ghostbusters catch the ghosts, which slows down the rise in PKE. When Peck has the storage facility shut off, it releases a massive amount of PKE, allowing Zuul and Vince to open the portal for Gozer to enter this dimension. When the Ghostbusters cross the streams, they're firing into a dimensional rift, which takes the brunt it, so their molecules don't explode.
The weird questions such as the ones Vankmen asks are questions a parapsychologist would ask. It's sometimes believed pregnancies and/or being on the special time of the month has an effect on the supernatural world. But, considering his character he probably just overheard the other two at some point talking about it.

In the DVD commentary, Harold Ramis (Egon), stated that, he is the brains, Venkman is the mouth, and Ray is the heart of the group, and Winston seems to be the realist to me, but these guys played their roles great. So glad to see you reacting, one of my favorite movies ever.
Winston also becomes the default mechanic for ecto 1. As Ray gets more involved and interested in helping egon with experiments, Winston works on the car to pass time.
Saw this for the first time in theatres for New Year's Eve 1984 (I was 6). The movie opened in June 1984 but stayed in theatres for 30 weeks, crazy! "Ray, when a someone asks you if you're a God , you say YES!"

Such a classic film. One of my favorite quotes is when Ray says "listen......you smell that?" LOL When I was younger I completely missed the key master is the guy who keeps getting locked out of his apartment lol.....others have mentioned this but it's hilarious now!
BTW, Rick Moranis, the dorky guy who was the key master actually had a great career as a comic actor, but then his wife died and he quit acting to be a stay at home dad for his kids, since he knew that if he kept up acting, he wouldn't be able to spend much time with them. He's definitely a guy who had his priorities in order.
Just watched TBR Schmitts' reaction to this film and they liked it. Glad you liked it too Duaffy. Time for part 2. Sigourney Weaver was in a biopic film called Gorillas in the Mist (1988).
Arguably, one of the best movies of all time. Definitely, no argument needed, one of the best comedy movies of all time. It was a unique set of circumstances that brought a very talented group of people together. If you have the anniversary BD there is a great documentary on the making of it. Right up until day one of filming no one knew if Bill would turn up. Then just as they were getting ready to shoot in walks Bill. Most of Bill's lines were improv. hahaha It was pure chance that all these guys came together to make this movie. Half of the cast were not even the 1st second or 3rd choice. Winston was supposed to be played by Eddie Murphy, Peter was supposed to be played by John Belushi, Louis was supposed to be played by John Candy... The script that Dan wrote was over 800 pages long (normal scripts are about 100). Ivan cut it down with Harold got it into a decent length. The budget was tiny and the studio wanted it to be made in a few months. Everything was against this movie. But they did it. Ohk, yeah they did it. Those 3 main characters have such a great onscreen chemistry that it's impossible to recreate. That's why the new one failed so hard. The only good thing about the new one was that the Ghostbusters are ladies. As that's the only thing that separates the old from new. Just a shame they fooked it up so much. I will never understand why people try to remake good movies. They never take a shitty movie and msake it better. They always choose a good movie and make it worse....

The way you feel about this movie is how I feel about The Exorcist being the scariest movie. It just isn't. But that's my opinion and I'm in the minority. When it comes to how good art is, be it movies, music, paintings, not everyone will have the same opinions.
@@missyotsuba8508 Well, the fact that people evaluate horror movies on what's "scary" is infantile to me. I can count on one hand the movies that "scared" me. There's eerie, spooky, disturbing, there are lots of movies that haven't "scared" me but that have haunted me, and left a linger atmosphere. So the fact that you evaluate "The Exorcist" (which I'm not a particularly huge fan of, by the way) as "not scary" just kind of demonstrates that you don't exactly have the most sophisticated approach to watching a movie. It sounds like to me you're projecting on to the film what you want to see before you see it, rather than just letting a movie tell it's story and be what it is. Just so you know: "The Exorcist" wasn't conceived as a horror movie, so the aim in fact wasn't to "scare" you, it was to tell the story of what a real possession might be like in the modern world. Anyways, back to Ghostbusters, it's fun, I like it! I saw it when it came out! But let's see, what came out that same year? 1984? Oh "Broadway Danny Rose", there you go, brilliant. Dan Aykroyd is a huge fanatic for the supernatural, all of the stuff he talks about in these movies is from books he has on the subject. Also keep in mind this was the early 80's, things were a little different back then, socially :P
You were asking about how the proton packs work, this is explained in more detail in the cartoon series, and is based on theoretical nuclear physics. They are completely shielded and safe to use, and do not damage living organic matter. So even if they hit a person, they would be unharmed. The power cells are nuclear, but the streams they fire are comprised of positively charged protons, which latch onto the negative energy of a ghost like an electromagnet. The inside of the ghost traps and the containment grid at their headquarters work in a similar way, by passing a positive ion charge through a metal cage. The only danger is in crossing the streams, which can cause a nuclear explosion. The doors of Gozer's temple swung closed from the force of the explosion and contained the blast (which is what Egon meant when he said "the doors swing both ways"), so that only the top floor of the building was destroyed.
After the movie was a hit there was a cartoon series and toy line, that is how i found out about ghostbusters before seeing the movie. late 80s/early 90s seemed full of making cartoons/toys out of things you wouldn't think should be for children
I have no idea if this is right, but the explanation for crossing the streams and reversing them that I came up with when this came out makes sense to me. I thought that when used properly, the streams were used to gather in and contain the ghosts, but when crossed they did the opposite which would be to blow them up. Also, other than the contained radiation of the power source, the Proton Packs wouldn't be radioactive. The electricity produced by a nuclear power plant isn't radioactive, so the Packs wouldn't be either. Love this channel!
Not exactly. Crossing the streams creates antimatter, which explodes when it comes into contact with matter. The streams work by latching onto ghosts like an electromagnet, since the beams are made of positively charged ions, while the ghosts are made of negative energy. The guys who wrote this movie clearly did a lot of research into theoretical nuclear physics.
The proton pack, designed by Dr. Egon Spengler, is a man-portable particle accelerator system that is used to create a charged particle beam-composed of protons-that is fired by the particle thrower (also referred to as the "neutrona wand"). Described in the first movie as a "positron collider", it functions by colliding high-energy positrons to generate its proton beam. The beam allows a Ghostbuster to contain and hold "negatively charged ectoplasmic entities". This containment ability allows the wielder to position a ghost above a trap for capture. While the Ghostbusters' dialogue indicates that the accelerator system operates similarly to a cyclotron (and indeed Dr. Peter Venkman refers to the proton packs in one scene as "unlicensed nuclear accelerators"), modern particle accelerators produce well collimated particle beams. This is far different from the beam from a proton pack, which tends to undulate wildly (though it still stays within the general area at which the user is aiming). The proton stream is quite destructive to physical objects, and can cause extensive property damage.
The "adult" jokes you mentioned in this movie, all have a more literal interpretation that a child would more likely arrive at than the sexual one. When a kid hears "I want you inside me" said in that context, their assumption will be that she means she wants him inside her the way Zuul is inside her. Venkmans response bears this out, and works as a good reply, no matter which way you took the previous line.
I was 13 when I saw Ghostbusters in the theater. I got some of the jokes. Some went over my head. That made later viewings more humorous. I saw the 30th Anniversary screening of Ghostbusters. The clothes, cars, electronics, etc. definitely dated the film. As did the special effects. A child of a woman in the row ahead of me asked her why people were smoking indoors. She had to explain that things were different back then. Despite all of that, it's still a movie I'll watch if it's playing. I'm looking forward to Ghostbusters Afterlife later in the year. It looks like it has much of the same spirit as the original. It's directed by Ivan Reitman's son. He was the boy having the birthday party in the restaurant when Louis becomes possessed by the Keymaster.

Back in the 80's they even had a cartoon called "the Real Ghostbusters". The cartoon started before the 2nd movie came out. In the cartoon, the green ghost, who likes to eat, became the Ghostbusters friend and mascot and they called him "Slimer". Slimer even lived with them in the Firehouse.
I loved your comment about the library. I could spend the rest of my life living in a library or bookstore and die a happy man. And this movie is a classic. I never get tired of watching it; I had the picture storybook of the movie when I was a kid and wore out my audio cassette I had of the soundtrack. I loved the songs.

Why is he always a casanova? One of Bill Murray's characters on Saturday Night Live was the Lounge Lizard. If you've ever seen a lounge lizard, part of their act is making sure some woman will invite him to her hotel room at the end of the show. Anyway, most of Bill's characters has been a variation on a lounge lizard.
Thank you for reacting to this one. Um, to answer your question about the adult nature of the jokes... You're correct. Like the subtle jokes of the early Loony Tunes, those jokes went over all of our heads as kids. Going back and watching them now is quite an experience. Not a lot of people were very overly aware of some things then but then again, this was the time of the Satanic Panic (the Dungeons & Dragons controversy) as well as the music "morality" movements when parents (mine included) burned my RPG's and records. I think I was around 12 when I figured out that biology, anatomy, sex, and all references to any of the above were evil, but westerns, where people got shot and killed, were good, and parents and politicians were incredibly stupid for believing that. In other words... Times haven't seemed to change much.
Saw the movie as a kid. I loved it, was fun. Saw it again as an adult and I was LOL in so many parts I never realized the subtle adult humor at the time.

It took two years but eventually they came out with a children’s cartoon that continued the adventures of the Ghostbusters called “The Real Ghostbusters” the reason it was called this, was to compete with a Ghostbusters cartoon with different characters and gadgets. Anyway in the Real Ghostbusters series, the Green blob ghost moves in with the Ghostbusters and becomes there unofficial pet. They even give him the name Slimmer. And that is what he’s been called to this day, even in GB commercials and the official video came which featured all four original actors and is Harold Ramis’s final performance as Egon before his passing. Since you’re a gamer I highly recommend it! You get to play a brand new member of the team. Ray asks for your name and Peter responds by saying “No names Ray. Remember what happened to the last guy?”
Duaffy also missed that Venkman's test, pain induced psychic abilities as a defense mechanism to avoid further pain, worked on the guy getting shocked. Was Venkman being a dick to the guy? Or was he getting a date and proving his hypothesis? Because, he kinda did all three.
Sometimes awkward, cartoonish, or otherwise primitive special effects are done on purpose to add to the comedy or to be surreal, not because they can't make them more realistic. This is partly the case in "Ghostbusters" (Also, what do "real" ghosts and monsters look like anyway?). This is especially prevalent in the movie, "Mars Attacks". In that movie, the special effects were done poorly or primitive to give the movie the feel of a classic 1950's science fiction movie as well as for comedy.
i think jeremy clarkson did that jaywalking thing in USA as a test in one of those 1980s documentaries and he just walked out into the streets and cars slowed down and let him pass where he said in UK he would have been run over, he did not understand it either, it was a very heavy trafficked road as well I think

You got it right about the Green Ghost; actually, the Green Ghost was a nod to John Belushi, who had just died; he was going to be one of the Ghost Busters.
I’ve got one for you. 1968’s (horror/drama) classic, Rosemary’s Baby. Quentin Tarantino said he believes Rosemary’s Baby is one of the greatest movies ever made. There are college course/lectures on the, purposely placed, similarity between the movie’s plot - what Rosemary’s going through - and women’s equality and the emotions women have/feel while going through a pregnancy.
That's a great movie for her to do, she'll really do a great job with that, absolutely. There are fifty reasons why she'd do a great reaction to "Rosemary's Baby". Duaffy: oh please, do "Rosemary's Baby"! Fantastic movie!

Actually all of Ghostbusters ARE scientist (expect Winston because he got employed later) but when they formed the Ghostbusters business, because do not forget they all were professors at the university. Like everyone forgot that Indiana Jones was also teaching at the university too. Also in movie you only see three "ghosts" that were not practical effects: Slimer (green guy), lady in the library and the ghosts that escape from subway. All other effects were hand made practical effects.

I'm happy to see you started this iconic franchise. After you watch part 2 you have to play the game. It was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. They even got a lot of the cast to give their voices and likenesses to basically be an unofficial 3rd movie.

Don't sweat the technobabble, it's pure fiction. I'm glad you liked this one, it's one of my top 10 favorite films. Each Ghostbuster has his own distinct personality, Egon is my favorite, the pure scientist. I like when he's in the hotel and pokes the guest to verify his test results then moves on. So funny. And Louis agreeing to give him a sample of his brain. You may have recognized the Dickless man, Peck, from "Die Hard" he was the obnoxious reporter. Also the jailer was the cop Sgt. Powell in the same movie. "Ghostbusters 2" is also very just not totally original. The more recent remake with the all female cast you can skip, I love the cast but it's a total CGI-fest. Effects do not carry a film, the story and acting do.
One of the best notes that has come out since the movies release that it is pure fiction, and Dan Aykroyd believes in it 100 percent for real. I think he doesn't get cast in a lot of things because he has a lot of wild beliefs and is legitimately insane. But in a comedy brilliant way too.
Someone brought up the fact that after the tower explodes, the cloud above it looks like Stay Puft. I'll be damned if I never noticed that after dozens of times watching this since the 80s.
Yes, this movie has a lot of adult humor, but became really popular with kids. That’s why they toned down that stuff in the sequel; less smoking, less innuendo, etc.

As a child of the 80s, I can attest that a lot of the more adult humour just goes over your head at the time. Its one of the great things about this film, though. The older you get, the more "new" jokes you get out of it. For instance, its not just the more smutty stuff that you miss, but the real deadpan stuff like how Egon and Peter and trying to haggle with the realtor and Ray ruins it all with his excited attitude (and being the one actually holding the money). Or the "they're very discreet," before they tear out the building in Ecto-1 with lights and sirens blazing.
It was also funny when you realise things before your other friends, too. I remember having a slightly younger friend and he didn't believe me when I said I'd just worked out how the whole keymaster and gatekeeper did the "unlocking." He was convinced it was just the kiss and that was it. Its funny how naive you are about such things when you're a kid! Its like how I used to think that James Bond just lay in bed with women and kissed a bit!

I can't remember how many times I saw this in theaters (not an excessive amount), and on pay-channels (HBO or Showtime, whichever it was on) followed by VHS. So many older references... but it is still entertaining for the younger crowd, thank goodness.
I was 7-8. I didn't get any of the obvious sex jokes. keymaster/gatekeeper... lol I just know the library ghost scared the pants off me. But other than that I enjoyed the film. My mother took me to see this and she didn't take my brother or my sister (they were younger obviously). It was of my fondest memories with my mother, she died a couple of years back and whenever I watch this I think of her.

1. The reason Egon would want to drill a hole in his head is because of a medieval medical practice called trepanning in which a hole is drilled into the skull to "release pressure." Trepanning can, according to some occult theories, lead to the development of psychic powers, visions, etc.

The reason Venkman ask the librarian if she's been menstruating is because parapsychologists have noted that poltergeists and spirit activity often coincide with the onset of menstruation in teenage girls. Dan Aykroyd, who plays Ray, is a serious believer in the paranormal and wrote the script. He wanted all of the technobabble that the Ghostbusters engage in to be based on real parapsychological theories. Everything Venkman is asking the librarian is what real parapsychologists would ask.

When the movie hit the theaters nobody considered it a horror film. It was a comedy, starring some well known comedians of the time: Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis and Harold Ramis. That little green blob is named "Slimer" and in the animated series was a part of the team. I believe the crossing of the streams at the end wasn't to destroy Gozer as much as close the Gateway. What makes the Stay Puff scene funny was because Ray did choose the safest thing he knew from his childhood. It just turned out to be a 50ft version of it. Seeing a giant marshmallow man walking through New York is hilarious.

Hi! Original generation Ghosthead here. Let me see if I can answer a couple of your queries.
Total protonic reversal. It essentially meant that by crossing the streams it could potentially destroy everything on a molecular level. So, they fired into the pocket dimension accessed by the gateway and basically destroyed it.
As for how the equipment works, it generates beams of positronic energy that electrostatically traps the negatively charged energy of supernatural entities. They do run on nuclear energy to generate the sufficient energy required. Their packs are basically miniature nuclear accelerators that create the reactions needed to generate the power and create the streams. And, I'm sure as most things that deal with radiation, the packs are probably lead-lined.
Anyway, it's pseudo-science that doesn't have to make 100% sense, just has to seem plausible enough within the context of the film.
As for kid-friendly, no, the original movie was decidedly not. It was an 80s comedy and was made accordingly, just not approaching the level of raunch many at the time did. The kid audience came because, well, it's blasting ghosts with cool lasers. Who WOULDN'T like that? The studio learned about the massive kid audience and made THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS cartoon in 1986. Then the 1989 sequel film was sufficiently watered down for that audience as well. Fewer curses, no smoking, no ghostly blowjobs.
It was "kid friendly" back then because we didn't wrap everyone in cotton and didn't panic if someone got his feelings hurt.

Yeah, that was subtle. Peter kept checking with Egon for prices. That was their first time trapping a ghost.
The technical stuff in this film is really just entertaining gibberish. You're not meant to think about it too much. However, the rules are pretty consistent. The apartment building attracts psychokinetic energy, which allows the ghosts to appear. The Ghostbusters catch the ghosts, which slows down the rise in PKE. When Peck has the storage facility shut off, it releases a massive amount of PKE, allowing Zuul and Vince to open the portal for Gozer to enter this dimension. When the Ghostbusters cross the streams, they're firing into a dimensional rift, which takes the brunt it, so their molecules don't explode.
The weird questions such as the ones Vankmen asks are questions a parapsychologist would ask. It's sometimes believed pregnancies and/or being on the special time of the month has an effect on the supernatural world. But, considering his character he probably just overheard the other two at some point talking about it.

In the DVD commentary, Harold Ramis (Egon), stated that, he is the brains, Venkman is the mouth, and Ray is the heart of the group, and Winston seems to be the realist to me, but these guys played their roles great. So glad to see you reacting, one of my favorite movies ever.

BTW, Rick Moranis, the dorky guy who was the key master actually had a great career as a comic actor, but then his wife died and he quit acting to be a stay at home dad for his kids, since he knew that if he kept up acting, he wouldn't be able to spend much time with them. He's definitely a guy who had his priorities in order.

Arguably, one of the best movies of all time. Definitely, no argument needed, one of the best comedy movies of all time.
It was a unique set of circumstances that brought a very talented group of people together.
If you have the anniversary BD there is a great documentary on the making of it. Right up until day one of filming no one knew if Bill would turn up. Then just as they were getting ready to shoot in walks Bill.
Most of Bill's lines were improv. hahaha
It was pure chance that all these guys came together to make this movie. Half of the cast were not even the 1st second or 3rd choice.

The script that Dan wrote was over 800 pages long (normal scripts are about 100). Ivan cut it down with Harold got it into a decent length.

Those 3 main characters have such a great onscreen chemistry that it's impossible to recreate. That's why the new one failed so hard. The only good thing about the new one was that the Ghostbusters are ladies. As that's the only thing that separates the old from new.

You were asking about how the proton packs work, this is explained in more detail in the cartoon series, and is based on theoretical nuclear physics. They are completely shielded and safe to use, and do not damage living organic matter. So even if they hit a person, they would be unharmed.
The power cells are nuclear, but the streams they fire are comprised of positively charged protons, which latch onto the negative energy of a ghost like an electromagnet. The inside of the ghost traps and the containment grid at their headquarters work in a similar way, by passing a positive ion charge through a metal cage.
The only danger is in crossing the streams, which can cause a nuclear explosion. The doors of Gozer's temple swung closed from the force of the explosion and contained the blast (which is what Egon meant when he said "the doors swing both ways"), so that only the top floor of the building was destroyed.
After the movie was a hit there was a cartoon series and toy line, that is how i found out about ghostbusters before seeing the movie. late 80s/early 90s seemed full of making cartoons/toys out of things you wouldn't think should be for children

I have no idea if this is right, but the explanation for crossing the streams and reversing them that I came up with when this came out makes sense to me. I thought that when used properly, the streams were used to gather in and contain the ghosts, but when crossed they did the opposite which would be to blow them up. Also, other than the contained radiation of the power source, the Proton Packs wouldn't be radioactive. The electricity produced by a nuclear power plant isn't radioactive, so the Packs wouldn't be either. Love this channel!

I don't know about you but I recently learned the irony of "The Key Master" possessing the one guy that gets locked out of his own apartment.
The "adult" jokes you mentioned in this movie, all have a more literal interpretation that a child would more likely arrive at than the sexual one. When a kid hears "I want you inside me" said in that context, their assumption will be that she means she wants him inside her the way Zuul is inside her. Venkmans response bears this out, and works as a good reply, no matter which way you took the previous line.
I was 13 when I saw Ghostbusters in the theater. I got some of the jokes. Some went over my head. That made later viewings more humorous.
I saw the 30th Anniversary screening of Ghostbusters. The clothes, cars, electronics, etc. definitely dated the film. As did the special effects. A child of a woman in the row ahead of me asked her why people were smoking indoors. She had to explain that things were different back then.
Despite all of that, it's still a movie I'll watch if it's playing. I'm looking forward to Ghostbusters Afterlife later in the year. It looks like it has much of the same spirit as the original. It's directed by Ivan Reitman's son. He was the boy having the birthday party in the restaurant when Louis becomes possessed by the Keymaster.
Teachers in college dating students wasn't a big deal back then. It went on in the 90s a lot at my university. We weren't so uptight about having a strict separating line.

Back in the 80's they even had a cartoon called "the Real Ghostbusters". The cartoon started before the 2nd movie came out. In the cartoon, the green ghost, who likes to eat, became the Ghostbusters friend and mascot and they called him "Slimer". Slimer even lived with them in the Firehouse.
I loved your comment about the library. I could spend the rest of my life living in a library or bookstore and die a happy man. And this movie is a classic. I never get tired of watching it; I had the picture storybook of the movie when I was a kid and wore out my audio cassette I had of the soundtrack. I loved the songs.

Thank you for reacting to this one. Um, to answer your question about the adult nature of the jokes... You're correct. Like the subtle jokes of the early Loony Tunes, those jokes went over all of our heads as kids. Going back and watching them now is quite an experience. Not a lot of people were very overly aware of some things then but then again, this was the time of the Satanic Panic (the Dungeons & Dragons controversy) as well as the music "morality" movements when parents (mine included) burned my RPG's and records. I think I was around 12 when I figured out that biology, anatomy, sex, and all references to any of the above were evil, but westerns, where people got shot and killed, were good, and parents and politicians were incredibly stupid for believing that. In other words... Times haven't seemed to change much.

It took two years but eventually they came out with a children’s cartoon that continued the adventures of the Ghostbusters called “The Real Ghostbusters” the reason it was called this, was to compete with a Ghostbusters cartoon with different characters and gadgets. Anyway in the Real Ghostbusters series, the Green blob ghost moves in with the Ghostbusters and becomes there unofficial pet. They even give him the name Slimmer. And that is what he’s been called to this day, even in GB commercials and the official video came which featured all four original actors and is Harold Ramis’s final performance as Egon before his passing. Since you’re a gamer I highly recommend it! You get to play a brand new member of the team. Ray asks for your name and Peter responds by saying “No names Ray. Remember what happened to the last guy?”

For the most part, they do. I've seen much worse CGI.
Sometimes awkward, cartoonish, or otherwise primitive special effects are done on purpose to add to the comedy or to be surreal, not because they can't make them more realistic. This is partly the case in "Ghostbusters" (Also, what do "real" ghosts and monsters look like anyway?).
This is especially prevalent in the movie, "Mars Attacks". In that movie, the special effects were done poorly or primitive to give the movie the feel of a classic 1950's science fiction movie as well as for comedy.
i think jeremy clarkson did that jaywalking thing in USA as a test in one of those 1980s documentaries and he just walked out into the streets and cars slowed down and let him pass where he said in UK he would have been run over, he did not understand it either, it was a very heavy trafficked road as well I think
The "Go get her, Ray!" not only was a good joke but is goes back to the beginning of the movie when Ray told the guys in the library basement, "GET HER!"

You got it right about the Green Ghost; actually, the Green Ghost was a nod to John Belushi, who had just died; he was going to be one of the Ghost Busters.
I’ve got one for you. 1968’s (horror/drama) classic, Rosemary’s Baby.
Quentin Tarantino said he believes Rosemary’s Baby is one of the greatest movies ever made. There are college course/lectures on the, purposely placed, similarity between the movie’s plot - what Rosemary’s going through - and women’s equality and the emotions women have/feel while going through a pregnancy.
That's a great movie for her to do, she'll really do a great job with that, absolutely. There are fifty reasons why she'd do a great reaction to "Rosemary's Baby". Duaffy: oh please, do "Rosemary's Baby"! Fantastic movie!

Actually all of Ghostbusters ARE scientist (expect Winston because he got employed later) but when they formed the Ghostbusters business, because do not forget they all were professors at the university. Like everyone forgot that Indiana Jones was also teaching at the university too.
Also in movie you only see three "ghosts" that were not practical effects: Slimer (green guy), lady in the library and the ghosts that escape from subway. All other effects were hand made practical effects.

I'm happy to see you started this iconic franchise. After you watch part 2 you have to play the game. It was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. They even got a lot of the cast to give their voices and likenesses to basically be an unofficial 3rd movie.
With respect, I think it would be accurate to say, this iconic movie, since the 2nd movie and the reboot weren't well received.

Don't sweat the technobabble, it's pure fiction. I'm glad you liked this one, it's one of my top 10 favorite films. Each Ghostbuster has his own distinct personality, Egon is my favorite, the pure scientist. I like when he's in the hotel and pokes the guest to verify his test results then moves on. So funny. And Louis agreeing to give him a sample of his brain.
You may have recognized the Dickless man, Peck, from "Die Hard" he was the obnoxious reporter. Also the jailer was the cop Sgt. Powell in the same movie. "Ghostbusters 2" is also very just not totally original. The more recent remake with the all female cast you can skip, I love the cast but it's a total CGI-fest. Effects do not carry a film, the story and acting do.
One of the best notes that has come out since the movies release that it is pure fiction, and Dan Aykroyd believes in it 100 percent for real. I think he doesn't get cast in a lot of things because he has a lot of wild beliefs and is legitimately insane. But in a comedy brilliant way too.

Yes, this movie has a lot of adult humor, but became really popular with kids. That’s why they toned down that stuff in the sequel; less smoking, less innuendo, etc.
