He even included a real Wilhelm Scream! 16:57 That’s twice in about five minutes that you manage to anticipate a joke.
They guy doing the sound effects for the radar is Michael Winslow. He got noticed in the Police Academy movies. He was so good at sound effects that he did most of the sounds in this movie. There is a clip of him at a talk show doing a Led Zeppelin song where he does all the sounds except the acoustic guitar being played on the couch beside him. It's not long, but it's worth looking up. Ludicrous Speed is a performance setting on Tesla Cars, because of this movie. I rarely comment on stuff like this, but that little dance in the diner scene was adorable. The end of the movie with the apes on horses was from the original Planet of the Apes. There were 5 total, the first one was good, and a must see if for no other reason to get the parody jokes.

The church they used is a real church, actor Dick Van Patton was a member and suggested they use it. Still looks exactly the same. grimmlifecollective does "Then & Now" filming location videos and uploaded one on Spaceballs about a month ago (March 2022). They also visit famous graves as well as the homes and graves of serial killers like Lizzy Borden and Ed Geins. A couple of years ago they took a private tour of horror F/X legend Tom Savini's house...each of his bedrooms is a different horror movie theme. You would like their channel.
I've heard that Mel Brooks was willing to make a Spaceballs sequel ONLY if Rick Moranis would return as Dark Helmet (the thing is that Moranis retired from acting in the middle of the 90's after his wife died in cancer and he wanted to raise and take care of their kids. He mostly did voice acting in the early 2000's and he's been offered to return in many of his well known roles but always turned it down. One or two years ago he actually returned to acting by being in a commercial with Ryan Reynolds and he's apparently gonna be in a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids). But now Mel Brooks is actually gonna do a sequel to History of the World, part 1 (which will be his 1st directing movie since Dracula: Dead and Loving It from 1995).
I hope that you are correct about Mel Brooks directing again. Mel Brooks is in his 90s. I doubt that a man in his 90s would be able to fully direct a film, but it is possible.
Did you recognize actor John Hurt from _Alien_ ? The same actor had a baby alien burst out of his chest in both _Alien_ and _Spaceballs_ , which was why he said "Oh, no! Not again!" It's funny how they got a Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) lookalike there, too.
George Lucas told Mel Brooks, that his one stipulation was that Lone Star couldn't be dressed as Han Solo. So, Mel Brooks dressed him as Harrison Fords other iconic character, Indiana Jones.
My dad had this on a VHS tape, recorded from TV, and showed it to me when I was pretty young after he'd shown me Star Wars, and I loved the crap out of it... a bit too much (My Dad didn't really seem too worried about age restrictions, I saw Die Hard in early primary school). I couldn't tell you how many times I watched it, but it was enough that I broke the tape - it was nothing but a screen of noise. That was a very, very sad day .. though, I think my mum probably was secretly happy, to no longer hear the same movie over and over again 🤣
Ohhhh yes. Young Frankenstein, History of the World Part 1, Blazing Saddles, and Robin Hood Men In Tights. That's the order. And at least History of the World has a trailer for part 2.
In Mr. Rental , you can see all of Mel Brooks' previous movies. The Producers, Twelve Chairs, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, Blazzing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World part 1, and To Be or Not to Be. All are worth watching. Also, Robin Hood Men in Tights, and Dracula Dead and Loving it. Maybe Life Stinks.
Duaffy, loved your reaction. I agree that silly comedies are fun if done well. May I suggest that you continue with Mel Brooks's movies that came before this one: Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, and others.
Personally, I've always liked "1-2-3-4-5? That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!" This after Dark Helmet says it's the kind of combination an idiot would have on their luggage. :)
"Schwartz" was also apparently Yiddish-American slang for "p**is" back in the day. Among the many potential meanings mentioned in the comments, this makes the most sense of the different Schwartz jokes throughout the film
I love this movie and I loved seeing you enjoy it. I haven't been able to get on RUclips for a month or two, and this feels like the perfect welcome back. Duaffy, as always, thanks for sharing with us.
If you haven’t seen or reacted to “Robin Hood Men In Tights” and “Blazing Saddles” I would recommend doing so as they are also Mel Brooks productions with similar comedy like that seen in “Space Balls”. I have heard, although not seen it myself, that Mel Brooks “ Young Frankenstein is also a good movie of his. Enjoy your movie reactions very much Duaffy.
As for the restaurant, it's actually called Pizza Hut. Yep, you nailed it. :) And speaking of restaurants, there is one called Kentucky Fried Chicken which sells, obviously, chicken, and was founded by Colonel Sanders... a name that, if you look at the movie, may seem familiar. "What's the matter Colonel Sandurz, chicken?" As for the 'talented' person with the noises, his name is Michael Winslow, and you can see him again in the Police Academy movies (which are also comedies and the first two or three aren't so bad... and... well... then there's 4, 5, 6, and 7...). Not sure if you understood the Spaceballs landing in the head of Mega Maid, but it'd make more sense if you watched a very old movie called 'Planet of the Apes'. As for 'Schwartz'... that was the last name of Mel Brooks' lawyer. So... never underestimate the power of the Schwartz.
"Schwarz" (without a "t") is German for "black", but here, "schwartz" is probably a rendering of the Yiddish word שואַרץ (shvarts), which also means "black". As you may know Brooks is Jewish, and in his film "Blazing Saddles" there is even a scene in which he plays a Yiddish speaking Indian chief.
Other Mel Brooks movies you have to react to - The original 60's version of The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World, part 1, Robin Hood: Men in TIghts and Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Here's some other underrated movies of his that are actually pretty funny too: The Twelve Chairs, Silent Movie, High Anxiety and Life Stinks. The one with the monkeys is a parody of the original 60's movie Planet of the Apes, which you really need to watch and react to also! =)
theres the wizard of oz homage, Bark the lion, Dot the tin man, the princess dorothy or the scarecrow,, planet of the apes, is the statue of liberty which you predicted
In order to understand the joke with the human-like apes and the Statue of Liberty on the beach, you'll have to watch the sci-fi classic _Planet of the Apes_ (1968). It's part of a huge and very famous plot twist in that movie from Rod Serling, who also created the TV series _The Twilight Zone_ .

Also wanted to mention it was funny how Mel Brooks played the roll of Yogurt, because he literally just crawled around on his knees with the cape and robes covering his feet. That had to be uncomfortable even with padding, I have a lot of respect for any Actor/Director who’s willing to go through that effort just to make it look good, especially if it’s a parody and not a high budget movie.
My absolutely favorite movie. I love all the silly lines and parody moments like the can of Peri-air mimicking the brand of water. Pizza Hut is an American fast food restaurant, so a great parody of Jabba the Hut. BTW the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps, guy was Michael Winslow, very talented and makes all his sounds. You left out "they've gone plaid!". Did you know that Tesla has a ludicrous mode for going fast and the latest fastest model is Tesla S Plaid!
The scene with the monster breaking out the guys stomach at the diner was a spoof of the movie alien. The actor is John Hurt who had the monster emerge from him in Alien. The song and dance the monster did was a recreation of a famous cartoon about a talking frog. ruclips.net/video/MsROL4Kf8QY/видео.html
John Candy's mog costume required Candy himself, and separate puppeteers for the ears and tail. Barf tells the waitress his tail "has a mind of its own", and it actually does since it was operated by someone else. Brooks could have just had Candy and one other, but wanted three since it took three puppeteers to operate Jabba the Hutt.
Duaffy, I realize you posted this over a year ago, but thank you so much for enjoying "Spaceballs"! It was a joy to see you laughing out loud to all the silly, over-the-top humour here. I loved this movie as a kid and still laugh at it a lot, but with a few years behind me, I realize that it's not nearly as sophisticated as some of Mel Brooks' other comedy films. It remains near and dear to my heart, however, and I hope it's found a special place in yours. My favourite exchange: "What's your name?" "Barf." "Your full name!" "Barfolomew!"
The voice of the ships computer is Majel Roddenberry, wife of Gene Roddenberry the creator of Star Trek AND the voice of the Enterprise Computer in Star Trek The Next Generation (relevant to when Spaceballs was released).
To answer your question, From Wikipedia, "Schwartz is a last name of German origin, meaning “black” (modern spelling in German is Schwarz). It was originally a nickname for someone with black hair or a dark complexion." However, ... (read on) However, I could fathom that it took on a derogatory meaning in Germany because Hitler thought that the "Master Race" would be made up of people that all exhibited traits, such as, "Tall (over 6'), Fair Complexion, Blond Hair and Blue Eyed", so being a person with black hair would make you inferior, as would having dark skin.
the radar operator making the sounds is comedian Michael Winslow, he was big in the 80s in a lot of commercials and the police academy movies. We even got dancing Duaffy. Only thing better would be to get our host an actual flamethrower.

Duaffy, additional information, Melvin Kaminski (Mel Brooks) is a WWII veteran who participated in the Battle of the Buldge. I brought this up because he has always retained his sense of G.I. humor in his life and films. He directed, produced and starred in his films at a time when people had a much better sense of humor about themselves, their culture and beliefs. I hope that you will continue to go through the rabbit hole that is the Mel Brooks filmography
Can we please not indulge this stupid "PC is killing comedy/culture" nonsense? You've been singing that tune for 40 years, and what's happened? Tropic Thunder, South Park, Rick and Morty, It's Always Sunny, basically anything with Will Ferrell, etc., etc., etc. Feel free to stack that up against the film and TV offerings of your mythical "golden age of free comedy" that was the '80s. Is "Perfect Strangers" or "Full House" your idea of free-wheeling vicious satire? The whole concept is just whining by white boys that they didn't get to pass-off stupid lazy stereotypes as "comedy" or be the only voices in the room any more, and the results of the move have been way better and far riskier comedy from a much wider variety of viewpoints. I defy you to demonstrate otherwise. It's particularly stupid that you'd make this comment under a Mel Brooks work, as he battled exactly the kind of white-supremacist nonsense you're pushing to get both his voice and those of other marginalized groups heard.
To michaelccozens. You made an excellent point and referenced a lot of great movie examples which I've enjoyed and would be an awesome playlist/reaction list for Duaffy to enjoy. Unfortunately, your point lost all value with the comment (and I quote YOU) "white supremist nonsense you're pushing". Another Fun Fact, the reason that Mel Brooks only did 1 Spaceballs is because George Lucas made Mel Brooks promise to only do 1 Spaceballs and that it was the only way Mel Brooks could do Spaceballs.
The movie is a spoof of several different well-known movies. Off hand there was Star Wars, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz, Planet of the Apes, Abbot and Costello skits, and off course; Alien. You'll surely notice that the actor, John Hurt, who had the chest-burster scene in Alien reprised his role for this movie.
Oooh! I've watched Spaceballs so many times over the past 33 years and have only just now realised the balls and the tie thing, thanks for pointing that out.
The Alien at the end is a callback to a Warner Brothers cartoon about a signing and dancing frog. Man finds a frog, it suddenly puts on a top hat and cane then starts dancing and singing that song. Man thinks he'll get rich in showbiz. Frog stays a frog in public but starts the routine the man is alone. Repeat many more times for laughs. The Frog was also an early mascot of the Warner Brothers TV network but was quickly dropped.

Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) is also in one of the greatest movies of the 80s, The Sure Thing, with John Cusack.
13:43 This was, of course, only 3 years after Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
15:17 One thing about Mel Brooks’ parodies, he’s very faithful to source material. He even included a real Wilhelm Scream!
16:57 That’s twice in about five minutes that you manage to anticipate a joke.
The Sure Thing is a much-overlooked classic!
And The Fly 2.
The moment when the faux-Chestbuster draws up his dignity and puts on the little straw boater is one of my favourite beats in comedy ever.

There were 5 total, the first one was good, and a must see if for no other reason to get the parody jokes.

grimmlifecollective does "Then & Now" filming location videos and uploaded one on Spaceballs about a month ago (March 2022). They also visit famous graves as well as the homes and graves of serial killers like Lizzy Borden and Ed Geins. A couple of years ago they took a private tour of horror F/X legend Tom Savini's house...each of his bedrooms is a different horror movie theme. You would like their channel.
Lizzy wasn't a serial killer, she was an axe murderer, but you get the point.

If you like the Uranus joke you should look into Uranus, Missouri. They have the Uranus Fudge Factory where they thank you for picking Uranus.
Mel Brooks will be 96 years old in June, I very much doubt he'll be directing any movies!
I hope that you are correct about Mel Brooks directing again. Mel Brooks is in his 90s. I doubt that a man in his 90s would be able to fully direct a film, but it is possible.
@@The-Underbaker Most likely producing.
@@davea6314 95 & yeah I have my doubts too, but that's what they have written in the news.
@@The-Underbaker I very much doubt you know Mel Brooks.

The part at the beginning of this video is a parody of an old toon called "One Froggy Evening" is from 1955.
Michigan J. Frog is iconic.
We need more movies that make Duaffy laugh like that. So down the Mel Brooks rabbit hole.
Blazing Saddles....Young Frankenstein...Robin Hood men in tights...History of the World part 1
@@rafaelrosario5331 And she can ask if there's a History of the World Part 2.
The Producers is my favourite, Gene Wilder plays the over the top neurotic too good.
I really miss John Candy
This is definitely a silly movie
but fun.
Nothing wrong with you being
goofy Duaffy
Duaffy, loved your reaction. I agree that silly comedies are fun if done well. May I suggest that you continue with Mel Brooks's movies that came before this one: Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, and others.
The plaid joke remains my favorite piece of comedy ever. It is so perfectly delivered.
Though the usage is wrong. The pattern shown is tartan. Plaid is the way it's warn around the waist and shoulder.
@@3DJapan what a buzzkill. You must be a hit at parties
That’s all we needed! A Druish Princess!
Funny, she doesn’t look Druish…..
Young Frankenstein is my personal favourite, but I don't think Mel Brooks ever made any duds.
"What's the matter Colonel Sandurz, chicken?"
As for the 'talented' person with the noises, his name is Michael Winslow, and you can see him again in the Police Academy movies (which are also comedies and the first two or three aren't so bad... and... well... then there's 4, 5, 6, and 7...).
Congratulations you have been selected amongst my shortlisted winners send a message on Telegram to claim your package 📦
your laugh is so infectious it's brilliant!
No. 🙄
It's Disturbing ....
I think this is my favorite reaction you've done. I love this movie.
i've said it before... your laugh is so darn cute.

Yes, to pretty much all of these!
Apes, not monkeys. 😏

To this day I LOVE the line, "Evil will always triumph because Good is Dumb."!

Young Frankenstein is another Mel Brooks classic
John Candy's mog costume required Candy himself, and separate puppeteers for the ears and tail. Barf tells the waitress his tail "has a mind of its own", and it actually does since it was operated by someone else. Brooks could have just had Candy and one other, but wanted three since it took three puppeteers to operate Jabba the Hutt.
Duaffey, since you started Mel Brooks, please look into "Blazing Saddles", another classic from Brooks!
Mel Brooks is a comedy genius. If you haven't seen him before, check out Robin Hood ; Men In Tights, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and others.
My favourite exchange:
"What's your name?"
"Barf."
"Your full name!"
"Barfolomew!"
one of the best parodies of all time!
Thank you for reacting to this one! This is one of my favorite parodies of all time. Just out of the blue zaniness of everything just makes my day.

To answer your question, From Wikipedia,
"Schwartz is a last name of German origin, meaning “black” (modern spelling in German is Schwarz). It was originally a nickname for someone with black hair or a dark complexion." However, ... (read on)
However, I could fathom that it took on a derogatory meaning in Germany because Hitler thought that the "Master Race" would be made up of people that all exhibited traits, such as, "Tall (over 6'), Fair Complexion, Blond Hair and Blue Eyed", so being a person with black hair would make you inferior, as would having dark skin.

All you've done is proven my point about people not having a sense of humor about themselves.
Try to be a better human and think about how people perceive you online based off your comments...it may make you a bit more content with yourself.
BTW, in spite of your presumptuous stereotyping of me, I'm a Hispanic American Veteran who has spent his entire defending the freedoms that others take for granted.
I hope that this short response finds you and yours doing well
I've seen this movie dozens of times and never once realized Dark Helmet was wearing a tie!!!
Also, if you like silly, I can highly recommend a lesser known parody of a classic Marx brothers movie called Brain Donors.
Another Fun Fact, the reason that Mel Brooks only did 1 Spaceballs is because George Lucas made Mel Brooks promise to only do 1 Spaceballs and that it was the only way Mel Brooks could do Spaceballs.

If you want more Mel Brooks, which you do, Blazing Saddles is probably his most iconic movie, if you haven't seen it.
