About to drive 1000 miles to Vienna from home in UK in my Q5 and realised on seeing the spare I had no idea how it worked so thanks very much for the vid session 👍
You're most welcome, glad it was helpful!! Enjoy the trip :-)

Very neat explanation. Thank you!
No freaking way. It actually shrinks back down! Wild!!
Wow, the inflation is a bit scary..lol
I think I'd keep my distance.
Great info.

Good video, thanks @Total Technik 👍
Thanks for this video and it's updated information. I don't have a vehicle with this kind of spare but I guess it's only a matter of time. Glad ypu managed to catch the valve to delflate it. My luck it would " "rocket launch" 100 metres in any direction.
Glad you enjoyed it :-) Yes, you do not need to remove the valve completely, but helps speeds the deflation up quite a bit!!

Learned a lot, thanks!
Imagine this. Your are on your holiday with a fully loaded car with 2 adults and 2 children having taken advantage of the extra boot capacity afforded by the collapsable spare wheel. You get a puncture. Where exactly does the stonking great punctured road wheel, probably a 20, or even 21 inch, go once you have reloaded your boot at the side of the road ? I suppose you will have that warm glow at that point anyway safe in the knowledge that Audi saved some money by not offering a full size spare.
Good point! I'm sure there must be people out there that have lived that exact possible scenario!!!

Thank you sir for the video! I have Audi Q8 had to change to my spare today! Was wondering how the heck does the tire now fit back in
Thank you for this helpful video.
Are these tires tested to not leak? What is the point of a spare that does not inflate when needed…
How the guy managed to curbed the spare tire? The rim is so mangled
Thank you sir !
Thank you :-)

A million times better solution here by Audi vs having to deal with horrible run-flat tires.
that is so helpful thank you
I think they should just make the room for a spare. The last thing you need on the side of the road is to deal with all this nonsense. But thanks for the video now I know how to put on an over engineered "temporary tire" it's definitely not a spare. A spare insinuates that it's an extra tire/wheel. Temporary means you are screwed and need to immediately figure out how and where you can go get a new tire and what hotel you can stay in if it's a Sunday and you aren't close to home. Several family members have audi suv's. I like my practical toyota 4runner. Doesn't break down and has a full size spare if you get a flat.
Yes, these are definitely not everyone's favourite solution for the problem. Some models (like the Q7) could have masses of space for a full spare really, the rear end seems slightly oddly designed (not maximised). Still, it does allow them to get the 'spare' into a much smaller space when it is genuinely needed/justified. But a full size spare is a better option in reality!! :-)

Hello friend, can i use the Audi Spare tire with Porsche Cayenne. I mean is this Spare tire is fit with All Germany Cars ?
Have you had it where the tyre shifts sideways and traps the inner sidewall and does not want to inflate properly or should I just keep going , looked very wrong when I failed to use mine properly
Same thing happened with mine. Stupid Audi decision. 80,000 dollar car no regular spare
Hmmm, we've not had that happen. In throey keep going as it should readjust, we'd definitely try and keep it going to see if it righted itself as we're kind of sad and geeky like that!! :-)

Mine looked like it did that but as soon as it hit 51psi it sorted itself out.
It’s all great but did you know that it has been scientifically proven that you only get a flat when it’s absolutely piddling down? Good luck removing your subwoofer, unscrewing your spare wheel, then locating and plugging in your pump. This will all be done at the side of a dual carriageway with cars and trucks whizzing by at 60 mph. You’ll notice I haven’t even mentioned locating your locking key, cracking the bolts off and locating the jack yet.
If I get a flat on my Audi In the rain I’ve decided to simply abandon the car and buy a new one~ I think it will be easier.
You could be on to something there... :-)

I just had a flat on my Audi. It’s not that hard. I’m a 69 year old woman and I did it all by myself.
Worked Thank you
What a gangster movie just to save a bit of space and they make driving unsafe just top it all off. Regulatory bodies around the world should ban them all.
Audi, making things more complicated than they need to be.

Like to see you try and remove the Mercedes SLK r171 spare we'll can't find video it anywhere. Harry Houdini would have trouble doing it
With enough force it will come out. Place a large plastic bag in the spare wheel well before you put it back it will make it much easier to remove when you need it
Its a joke this isnt standard on all cars! In australia, you can be 500km from help in the outback!
I was 250 miles from a tire shop in utah. I am an aussie. I will never again rent or buy a car without a full size tire as spare. The flat meant a repaif kit or spacesaver couldnt be ised as i was too far from s destination to use the spacesaver. Trip destoyed.
Porsche had them on the 944 in the 80's
And the 911 had them in the 70's
bandit 911 and the 900 had them in the 60’s
Awesome video! Very well explained! What is the name of the piece that you removed do deflate the tire? I’m missing both of those pieces on my spare. And so you know if I can buy those pieces or would I have to purchase an entire spare tire.
The part is called a valve core and valve core remover, the valve type is called a schraeder valve
I had a spare tire but it got a flat riding in the trunk
I have 20 inch wheels and I’m bit hesitant on using the spare tire and cause damage to the differential. Is it safe to use? Is there any setting to deactivate the differential to avoid any damage?
Yes, it is safe to use. Remember that these are for emergency use only. Just to get you to the tyre shop. They have a maximum speed rating clearly written on them, and a short journey at a slower speed will not cause you any undue harm. But obviously you don't want to leave it on the car for hundreds/thousands of miles. That would be dumb!! ;-)

Just tried to use my spare and it was useless. The pool toy compressor is also a joke. Spent over and hour trying to chase air leaks from around the tire to get it to hold.
I deflated my collapsible spare but now it won’t inflate again, seems to be unseated. Any ideas how to get it inflated again?
I had this same issue and later had to use it again. Fortunately I was near a shop and we sprayed silicone spray all around the bead area and the inside of the rim. Inflated it 2 or 3 times and tapped with a hammer and the bead seated again and we used it. I've got 250 miles on mine now; only reference I've been able to find for usable range says 70 miles.... I've ordered a replacement from ebay.
Replaced a tire on a q5 and I was like. Wtf kind of wheel is this then it pooped out I jump back was using a gas station air pump 😂
I know this much. I want to see a cross section of that tire haha
Yes that would be interesting to see. I'd guess pretty thin!

Trust Audi to over complicate a spare tyre, while saving a few centimetres of space. Watch how in 10 years time that compressor will fail, and the tyre will somehow not inflate properly
Me today in a parking lot cursing Europeans for over an hour to eventually call for a tow….
Just bring back normal size spare wheels ffs
Am i the only one who thinks a space saver doesn't actually save that much space,i would rather lose the couple of inches space an have a proper full size wheel in the boot!
Waow 🤔 Thankyou . .
You're welcome :-)

Gawd, and I thought Volvo were annoying enough at only giving you an inflation kit... Now it's "assemble your own tyre".
First thing I did was source a spare wheel for the boot.
We don't blame you!! If you can make it fit of course!!

Price please
$140 for a "used" but never used one on ebay. Bought this to replace the one I used twice and had 250 miles on.
Does the spare have a sensor?
No, it is just a standard valve. At least on this one, some MAY have, but the various ones I've seen don't.

I believe the question refers to the yellow clip on the cover? Seems to be a sensor?
Would have been easier to design the vehicle with a little bit bigger hole
Than to design this tire / rim and have to carry a compressor
Praying to God that the compressor works if you get a flat
Or you will have 2 flats instead of 1
Original pump is a junk. I could never inflat the spare tyre. Original pump is dumb
Will this fit in the bottom of trunk QX30 2018 Lux - size deflated would help, height/diameter
Can the air inflator provided fill up regular car tires if their pressure's a bit low as well?
Yes, it should just be an air inflator so can inflate any tyre in theory!

Nice video but these things are JUNK! They never inflate the right way always want to pop only on one side!
This is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen. Leave it to the euros for such things.
Space saving spare tyres are not for everyone it would seem :-)

They are a complete waste of time why anyone would want to take the spare wheel out to inflate it to change the damaged tyre in bad weather is beyond me
Yes, they are not the most popular option out there for spare wheels! But they do take up a lot less space. I don't think anyone would 'want' to change a spare tyre on the side of the road, but it's an emergency thing (and hopefully not very often thing!! lol)

Now. Try to buy a replacement. You cant. If you could its two to three times the price of a real tire. The only place that sells replacement is the car dealer. One of the best choices is buy a fifth wheel and tire when you buy the car and throw this rubbish pump and crap tire out.
If a car driver bought and fitted a tyre the size and grip of that space saver they would be stopped by the police, given a ticket and their car tagged for being non-road worthy.
Yes, absolutely! They are for single-use emergency situation only. A set of four of these on a car would be completely illegal, and not safe!

90% of new cars sold now have a reinflation repair kit and pump with no spare or a limited speed and range spacesaver. It should be illegal. It isnt. Towing is the solution. Useless.
Good review but quit with the ‘guys’…this isn’t America……
Thank you, much appreciated. Hey, guys, it may be America. It depends on where you're watching from ;-)
