As a single hand backhander, there's no greater feeling than hitting the perfect backhand winner. Denis is part of a long line but maybe dying breed of single handed backhanders.
A lovely backhand. Less flourishy backswing than Gasquet and seemingly has the ability to create angles and take the ball on the rise like Agassi. Remarkable.
The main disadvantage we one handers have over two handers is simply how much more preparation it takes to hit a 'full power' groundstroke. Two handers can poke winners down the line on the run with no backswing or take every single ball on the rise. Both take SERIOUS concentration and consistency as a one hander. Shapo has overcome a lot of those weaknesses, it seems. The way he takes the ball on the run is unreal
And is this stroke (esp Shapo's) more prone to injury? Look at how the elbow seems to get the brunt of the pressure in the follow through! I love all one-handers!
I highly recommend seeing Shapo play live and in person. Whether he wins or loses, watching him unleash that backhand, especially on the run, is just spectacular. No other way to put it.
Yeesh. That is pure. My backhand is garbage in general, but regardless of that, I always felt that you could actually hit a backhand harder than a forehand if you timed it right and had the ball in your "wheelhouse". Definitely easier (at least for me) to hit a forehand with power consistently from different heights and angles, which makes me appreciate his backhand that much more.
I feel the same way about power from a backhand, I think full power wise a one handed backhand should be more powerful than the forehand because it's more natural to open the body up, and then it becomes a consistency issue.
On the contrary, I my backhand (two hands) is much better than my forehand for a reason. I find myself positioning my legs better and going way more down with my body so I can create enough power for some nasty backhands. forehand on the other hand is meh
What I think is best about his backhand is that it’s consistent and he isn’t falling backwards all the time when he hits it and he can get it off quickly.
I just love the single handed backhand. It's a beauty if done correctly. I also play a single handed backhand but to just get it right is much more work than double handed. But still if done right it's a beauty.
A little more complicated than Stan's backhand, but Shap appears to have more fun with his rips. Shap gets a lot of shoulder turn his prep, which lets him get a ton of torque from his torso. That's why his crosscourt gets so many outright winners, unlike someone like Tsitsipas, who holds back the racket head on his cross courts, and thus fails to get the needed velocity. You've got to really throw that frisbee hard, and drive over and through with the thumb.
It might feel like the thumb ist working (and you can aim for that feeling if it correlates with a useful shot) but all the thumb and the rest of the hand really do is grip the racquet firmly enough. The wrist, too, is best kept firm through the shot. What mostly rotates during what people often call a "wrist flick" is actually the forearm: radius and ulna angle past each other. The wrist may fall back as a result of the follow-through but the muscle work that generates racquet-head speed is taking place further up the arm even during a flick. A shot with full preparation obviously engages the rest of the body as well. You typically flick when you don't have time to prepare. But you don't do it by flexing the wrist, let alone the thumb. Try moving only those joints (not the arm, shoulder or body muscles) and you'll see you get next to no power.
To me, the joy of tennis is not the consistency, the lack of errors, but occasional flashes of genius like the Shapo special. Even if Shapo doesn't get to the No. 1 spot, he is still the best to me.
I believe it's called follow through which makes his backhand so good. His follow through is huge. His upper body is completely open immediately after contact. Yup it's called good follow through, and it's how he was taught to strike the backhand. If he could only learn the same two words also apply to his forehand, he could be a player that dominates the game.
it looks nothing like Federer's backhand. It looks more like Gasquet or Wawrinka, which are arguably better. The two exceptional shots Federer has are his forehand and serve, his backhand is good and has improved at the end of his career, but it's not a dominant shot.
@@MrTresto change my view, Gasquet's backhand is unaesthetic. Wawrinka's is stiff and powerful like a cannon blast. Shapovalov's is the most whip-like, fluid and effortless. Which arguably brings it closer to Federer's backhand. I would argue his backhand is more fluid than Federer's.
Thiems is very fluid and also simple. Thiems top spin BH might be better than all of them tbh. Shapos is the best for singular shots but its not consistent due to its big wind up and difficult technique. All round though Federer has the best backhand when we consider passing shots, slices, smashes, volleys, half volleys, on the run etc. Probs a few I missed but they all pale in comparison overall to the variety of the Federer backhand. Also I've never seen one player hit so many BHDTL right in the corner or on the line in such straight line as Federer has. I think it's the most accurate single hander. Overall Fed has the GOAT single hander. if we are just talking top spin then its Thiem /Wawrinka. Shapo is still somewhat unproven. I think Shapo will peak when hes 25+. Actually, that's true. Even with that great bh, he'll step around it if he can to bang the big forehand. So will Stan and the rest of them. Fed certainly did.

That might be the one advantage Stan has over Shap: Consistency. Stan's backhand is so mechanically simple and quick, and he can change from slice to top in an instant, effective with either shot. Looks like Shap hits his bh harder tho, not that he really needs to. Opponents hardly flinch when they see it - no chance at all.
