Nikon Noct 58mm f.95 vs Nikon 85mm F1.2 | Nikon lens review
Experience: Sheer Excitement of shooting the Nikon Noct takes over. You anticipate magic to happen.
The focus ring is smooth and great to focus with. You can eyeball it too, but better to magnify and get the focus just right when wide open.
The weight… it’s a good idea to carry a tripod only because of the noct. Its has a tiny tripod collar which come handy.
You won’t be super mobile because it’s heavy and because it’s a manual focus lens. The focus throw is long. Therefore it’s accurate. But it’s also not instant to focus.
Build quality: The noct is the most well built lens I have ever touched. It’s a legit tank. Fully metal body. And thick metal. Every part feels premium and everything moves to smoothly. It’s a made in Japan lens.
The 85 is good. But touch it and you will know the difference. It’s mostly made of plastic. But it’s a much lighter lens so it’s easier and more compact.
Image quality
Sharpness: 1. Noct is slightly softer wide open. But incredibly crazy sharp wide open. It’s soft only by its own standards.
2. Sharpness is neck to neck at 1.2/ 1.3 onwards.
3. at f5.6, sharpness is slightly better on noct. Which will you find out by zooming in 800% in the centre. So practically no difference.
CA: The noct has some CA wide open. You can see it straight against the light till f5.6.
The 85 has some CA. But at f2 it’s almost gone. By 2.8 definitely gone.
LCA:
Noct has more LCA across the f stop range.
The weight Slows you down. After some time when the excitement wanes, you realise that lack of movement costs you creatively. That freedom of movement is slightly more important than absolutely highest quality of image output.
And the lack of movement also restricts the models movement. And makes her tired. It kind of makes her a prisoner of the her space. And autofocusing lens really allows easy fluid movement of both parties and results in more engaging shooting experience.
Conclusion:
Overall both lenses are very similar image quality. But the 85 is much cheaper, lighter, compact with fast and silent and accurate autofocus.
The easy of use means you will create better stuff with the 85 if the focal length isn’t limiting for you. Image quality from the noct is top notch. But you’re paying 3 times the money for image quality matched by the 85. In fact, the 85 has better controlled aberrations.
Overall, this comparison show just how good the 85 is. It also shows that Nikons lenses are getting better each year. And most people should consider the 85 to be their noct.
However, one should see some pictures here. One should remember that the noct has a look. It’s a look. It’s uncanny to have that non telephoto width and yet have that telephoto depth. That look is hard to replicate. It’s that distinctive look combinations of focal length, shallow depth of field, character and a a strange vision sense of depth in every image the noct creates… that makes the noct stand apart as a special lens. It’s not about being better. It’s about being unique. And the noct is doing just that. Creating images that look so different and so unique that your work stands out. I will discuss that on another episode. Развлечения
Fantastic review. Glad to see the detailed review of image quality and fringing. Looking forward to the next video!
Thanks for this video. I recently started to develop an obsession with the 58mm noct, but given it's price I wanted to give myself logical alternatives that would be more reasonable, and your breakdown in this video was what I needed to hear.
That was a very useful review thank u! Chromatic aberration gets wild when doing flash photography. It's a pain to work with
Of thank you for saying this! Chromatic aberration/ fringing is the Biggest killer of high contrast photography.
Nice video Frames - looking forward to the Noct video you mention!

The 50 1.2 and Noct makes more sense to me.
Love the pictures
The kind of video I want to watch, Thanx Dada
Awesome❤
That's some great glass ...
I'd love to see the 50mm f1.2 and Plena compared too ... 🦘
Very well made. Thank you
Thank you Sean
Liked your review and pictures. I don’t know who had that Noct to treat badly enough to ding and scratch it up like that. You would think anyone buying that lens at full price would have babied it unless it was dropped. The hood definitely has a flat spot that indicates is took a fairly large hit or drop. It would be great if Nikon made one or two lenses at f/1.0 or even f/0.95 again in a smaller size with very similar optical performance that can include autofocus. That would be awesome and much more practical.
Hi Glenn... you are right. It is clear that this copy was abused however I have checked with Nikon themselves to check if the optical quality is compromised and the service team assured that it was perfectly fine. Which also means that it can literally take a beating.
@@FramesTM Glad to hear nothing was optically misaligned or otherwise not functioning properly. 😌
to chci na z 50 🙂. Děkuji
That's overkill. Upgrade to a z6 at least and buy the 85 1.2 down the line. I wouldn't recommend u invest in the z50 (APSC). Drop it as soon as u can😂
When I see all these reviews I can never see these chromatic abbarations in the videos when they use books or whatever as examples😂 Anyways both lens look great. That one lens looks like it's been abused a bit.
You have a point
I think you’re making some bad conclusions comparing the 58 and the 85. It’s clear the 58 is sharper, more so than I would’ve thought.
That’s what I said. I said that the 58 is sharper till f2.8. That difference is highest at f1.2. After that it becomes difficult to actually see the sharpness differences in both lenses. This is what I said. If not, I am repeating it again in this comment.
Love the pictures
Thank you Sean!
