  • Are electric motorcycles worth it in the real world? I take a 2019 Energica Eva EsseEsse9 out and about on the roads of Britain and use the awesome Calimoto app to plot a random route into the country to intentionally run out of charge. How easy is it to find a charge point, and how long does it take? Find out in this vid.

Hands down, one of the most down-to-earth reviews of any electric motorcycle I've seen on RUclips; no shovelling in of figures, no sugar coating (no unnecessary bashing, either), no prejudice, no nonsense, just experimenting like any of us would do and enjoying it while doing so... Great video, mate!

Stumbled on your channel today, subbed after seeing you've decided to go full time with it. Best of luck man, enjoying what content I've seen whilst working! I've always had great rides with Calimoto in the Kent area, so many great little roads and a few good pubs as well. Don't know if you have any sway or contact with them at all but if you could suggest a road rating system that would be great. Sometimes a road is a bit too rural or gravelly on a motorbike to be enjoyable, if we could tap a no entry button on the screen or something whilst riding down it so that the app knows to avoid that road in the future that would be great!

oi @teapotone , really enjoy these videos. As this footage was from August you may be more familiar with the Energica bikes by now, but I watched the charging section and couldn't help but notice the bike wasn't turned up to full power. That is to say at your charge session you were only requesting 65 amps from the station out of a potential 80 from that bike which maths out to you getting 19kW instead of ~25kW.
While charging the bike, turn the key on and then toggle the MODE button to the left or right to adjust charge rate. I don't know why you were set low, but it will go up a lot higher than you had it, meaning significantly faster charge. Cheers from California.

I just ordered a 21.5kWh Eva Ribelle and live .2mi away from 7 brand new L2 charging stations. And they’re free 😊 Planning on filling up while I grab a quick bite to eat before each ride, which I pretty much do anyways.
Lots of L3’s evenly spaced out in my area too and I’m in a very rural area. Even if paying for energy here and there, it’s just as it was in the video.. about half or a little less than half the cost of petrol. Add to that, minimal maintenance and my return of investment on the cost of ownership offsets my initial buy in by ~$3k/yr. my average length of bike ownership is about 7 years. That alone pays for the bike.
☀️⚡️Even if I top off at home and wake up to a full “tank” each day, it’s still on the cheap or free as I create a surplus of energy each month with the 20 solar panels on my roof. It’s the middle of summer with my A/C on regularly and I still have a current credit of $240.. and I have a Tesla that gets plugged in at home as well. Sometimes I have an electric bill of $20-$50 if its been a cloudy/rainy month. It’s like installing a sun to cash converter on my roof as I get a rebate check from my utility company at the end of each year. Might as well put some of that excess in the form of fun on a new electric motorcycle.
Converting sun into fun.. I like that.

      @uwematschulat4181 4 года назад +2

@@evolv.e Congratulations on choosing a Ribelle. After 5000 km with my SS9 + I can see the following. So far I have only recharged 2 times at an external charging station (with CCS). So almost exclusively use the socket at home. Today I am e.g. Driven almost 150 km for a good 3 hours, that works great without reloading.

Tom tom bike sat nav allow you to choose alot more options for your ride, similar to the calimoto app you used on this ride. Check out canadas new electric motobike called Damon, I think you will like it. Interesting there are currently more charging points than petrol stations in the uk.

Great video, Bruce. Glad you are back. I like the concept of the electric bikes provided the electrical energy you are 'filling the tank' with is from proper clean sources. However, apart from the limited range, lengthy delays to journey with charging and lack of infrastructure ... the questions I have are: 1. What does the difference in air temperature have on power of the cells? This is a factor in all standard, NiMH, LiFe, LiPo, etc. batteries and can severely affect available power. 2. Price ... would these bikes come down significantly in price as more and more people adopt them? 3. What is the service cost, i.e. the cost of replacing the battery pack, maintenance internals for other components, etc.? 4. How are these battery packs recycled/disposed of? What impact is there on the environment? [in fact, the same goes for cars too] 5. How much is the range affected by taking a pillion and luggage?

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  4 года назад +1

All great points there Jay, and a few which the industry just doesn’t seem to want to address - battery disposal/replacement, environmental impact etc.
Something I have noticed with the release of the new 2020 range is that Energica are now saying the battery is good for around 1200 cycles @ 80% capacity. So if you used the bike say 5 times a week then the battery will last around 240 weeks - roughly 5yrs. The battery has a 3 year, or 31,000 mile warranty.
It’s certainly not perfect, but the improvement even on when I made this vid last year are staggering.
Still lots to improve and deal with though 👍

Cheers Paul, yep I’ve said this for a while now, until they crack the convenience factor, people will just not take up electric unless it becomes the only option.
I think if they make it like the interchangeable batteries you get for power tools, where you arrive at the ‘gas station’, take the battery out of your bike/car and replace it with a fully charged one, pop it in and drive/ride off, then that’s a very viable solution.
      We’ll see 👍

LED lights shouldn’t affect the range at all. They’re usually ~15 watts each for headlights and much less for rear and indicators (about 5 watts). The motor draws 11.7 kw/hr. K=1000. So it’s a massive difference.

If I were to twist gently and ride conservatively I’m sure that 58 mpg is doable, just as sure as that 400km is possible if one can resist the urge to twist the grip quickly when the road opens up or there’s a long sweeping curve.. but where’s the fun in that 😄

20 minutes for an 80% charge? Hmmm. Wouldn't it be great if bikes had their own built in power stations that you fuelled with....I dunno, petrol maybe.....and all over the country you could have petrol 'stations' so that when you run out you can buy some more and be on your way again in 2 minutes? :-) I know, I know, I'm being sarcastic and quoting Clarkson. Great review! I'm still clinging to petrol power for as long as I can though.

You DO need to change you'r mindset to use electric for sure .. but is too hard ?? NO not even a little. with the Energica's you can fast charge and the range for now isn't perfect BUT it's surely ain't the worst.
Plan your trip and charging won't be something you use time on .. more like you find someplace to stop to enjoy the view, have a cup of coffee, a pie break whatever and while your there you charge your bike and suddenly you have traveled more than 200 miles without thinking about needing to "fill" up the bike.
Its all about changing your mindset ... same with a normal EV example "Tesla" and do things differently ... in the end you use less time standing about fueling your bike/car than you do with petrol.. all I'm saying ... though you DO need to be able to thing in a different way ... ...
And YES the RANGE do still need to come up but tech takes time specially when people don't want/like it..

The more EV's on the road, means more people charging, which would lead to queing for the charge points and if the average charge takes 25mins like the bike in your vid, the que would start to get pretty big, unless they start to fit 10x more charging points at filling stations, so i think we're a long way off from where we need to be at the moment, unfortunately.

Only getting my license this summer so I know its not the perfect bike for me but Electric has gotten me hooked badly now :) so for me anything better than normal fuel is what I'm going for sadly batteries ain't light so can't get a good beginner bike that's easy ..
Though still Electric is much easier than normal to learn to ride on only the weight is the problem and more so for a small person like myself :)
oh and for the SS9.. it sounded like you had the small battery ..
EVA EsseEsse9+ City: 400 Km - Combined: 230 km - Extra-Urban: 180 km now, I only got the "KM" here but its not hard to convert it to whatever you peeps use ..
Range for me is only a problem on highway where I'm seeking a range of 2 hours between 10 and 85 % at aprox 120 km/h this will be within the fastest charge time and when we get to that point no one can really complain anymore ... oh and charge time from 10 to 80 is a max of 15 mins in my plans ...
All will get better when we get the SSB's or similar .. till then we just gotta keep helping where we can to get it better ...

The GSA in 68 miles as had to fill before 5.70 took 3 mins ready to go. Yes cheaper yes the price will go up. But stopping every 60 to 80 miles for 30 to 40 mins will start to piss you off plus all that food you start to eat lol. So first stop 3.08 plus coffe 2.95 and sandwich meal deal 3.50 = 9.53 so if every stop you just get coffee your talking 6 quid per 60 miles 🤔🤔🤔🤔

It sounds like a milk float! Not having a clutch I see you found a good use for your left hand :-p (selfie Stick).
I've been doing something similar South of Paris but just randomly turning left or right at junctions depending on what the road looks like or what I can see in the distance. I have downloaded Cali Moto and it's already produced an excellent route for me. It's a great little app. - *thanks*

Thanks for the review. You did stop and buy ludicrously expensive electricity! Thing is about practicality, it depends on how you ride. Vast majority of journeys in the UK are under 10 miles, and if you can charge at work you can double the range for a daily commute. The issue is the initial cost

I subscribed to CaliMoto based on your recommendation from one of your prior videos. Amazing app/website on bike or if you must, in a car.

Excellent video and great channel :-) I am struggling to see how Electric Vehicles will have a future. As it is one has to queue at most filling stations in the UK to get petrol or diesel. I wonder how it's going to work if you have mostly electric vehicles and they want to charge it at a service station. How long are you going to have to wait your turn to charge your own vehicle and then the time charging it? Before you know it you will be spending hours of each day trying to charge your vehicle and that's certainly not practical. Where is all this energy going to come from for the huge demand and how much is it going to cost us in the long run? Another worry is how long will the batteries last before they need replacing? Can you imagine you and 10 mates go out for a ride and you all need to charge your bikes and there are only 1 or 2 chargers available? Another issue is most people don't have a driveway at home or they cant get parking outside there house so how are they going to charge there vehicle other than at a filling station? Way too many uncertainties and not enough Colbolt on planet earth so unless they come up with a new source it's dead in the water!

I absolutely 100% agree bud and have said all along that I don’t think electric is the way to go or indeed the final solution, for the very reasons you’ve just pointed out.
However, one thing is certain. We will HAVE to move to an alternative energy source of some kind in the not too distant future, and it may well be the case that personal travel as we know it no longer exists. It may well end up that it’s just not possible for everyone to have their own car or bike, or maybe we’ll be rationed to a certain amount of energy to use per week?
      Who knows?
Personally I think what ever the energy source is going to be, they have to make it interchangeable in order for the masses to adopt it - like the batteries you get for power tools.
You rock up at the service station, take the dead battert/power pack out your vehicle, take a new/charged one and slot it into your vehicle, pay your money and go. Boom, it’s quick and it’s convenient.
Right, that’s that solved, let’s move onto religion and politics next 😎😂👍

@Xtreme Flyer I don't know about that, there is a tendency all over the world to go all electric. Then there is the fact you can't fill up from home with petrol, electric is present in each and every household. For now most outlets take in 240volts and needs to be converted into DC. However three phase is the norm really, that is what your local industrial estate uses. Most of mainland Europe is already equipped with it. Those electric induction stoves work on that principle, all it takes is one more cable in the box and you will have 400volts
Compared to petrol, more households have electric than households having a petrol outlet in their house, don't you think?

That’s true, but not everyone would be able to get their electric out of their property and into their vehicles - assuming they don’t have a garage or driveway so park in the street or away from their property 🤷‍♂️

@@teapotone that is true, however it is also true not every household isn't connected to the grid. Those would be better off using solar as source, unless they live in the northern and southern latitudes, when there is no sunlight reaching an area it wouldn't be viable. Those would be better served with petrol and hydrogen in the near future. As always it has to be a mix of all of them. And that will/could involve nuclear, be that fusion and/or fission, sure there are problems with it but, the adagio has to be 'we could work on solving those problems, let's do science'.
What I, and most of the scientific world, see as an inevitable transition to electric. If only because we have squandered enough of those precious few drops, not to make the world a better place, nut we probably need it for those chemicals which makes the world go round and round.
Ah well, it is a right old mess when you think about. Probably because I do think about it I react the way I do. Sorry for that, can't help it 🤔🤗
