How to MAKE Identical TABLE LEGS on a Wood Lathe
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 дек 2019
- Ever wondered how to make identical table legs on a wood lathe? My approach uses a simple template, also known as a story stick, to transfer all feature transitions and diameters to the table leg.
In this video I'll share my technique while making a set of farmhouse table legs.

I’m in my first semester of furniture making school. My design project is going to have round table legs. I gotta learn how to do this over the next month. I’ve only used the lathe to make a bowl and mallet so far
Bowl turning is where I started on the lathe. It's a ton of fun! Hope your projects goes well!
This was awesome!
Thank you so much 👍🏻😃😃
Looks great!❤
Thank you very much!
That’s perfectly done .. Where are you located buddy, I need to come take paid lessons for wood turning ….
Nice turning Mike! Thanks For sharing the video with us.👌👍😎JP
Thank you very much JP! Glad you liked it! 😃👍🏻
Your very welcome Mike! Have a wonderful week! Thanks For sharing the video with us.😎
I have a question.
is there a way to use the template as a physical guide jig a tool could follow and that gets transferred to the spindle?
The best attachment I've seen was in a video titled "TORNO COPIADOR PARA MADERA" made by Manuel Castro. That thing is so smooth, but unfortunately, he only sells locally to friends and family. Apart from that example, the best lathe duplicator (or copy attachment) I've seen is made by Grizzly.
I don't think I would have the patience, (or ability), to turn something identical multiple times. That's why I stated on your last scrap wood challenge that I have no desire to own a lathe at this time. I respect the ability that you and others have to do what you do with a lathe.
I hear ya! Turning one off items is a bit more enjoyable for me, but it's always nice to mix things up a little 😃
@@WoodshopMike By the way, who won the last scrap wood challenge? I'm not on Instagram, so I wouldn't know.
@@AutotechWoodworking I think Kathleen won by a couple votes! (I'm not surprised 🤣🤣)
Look how amazing you are this is so cool
Now I can see why table legs are so costly!
Most production legs are made on a CNC lathe, but even then there's a huge equipment expense!
Great video. I have a drill attachment lathe so will giving it a go.
hahahahahahahaha
How do you ensure that the taper on the leg is identical?
There will be slight discrepancies but you use calipers and a story stick to layout the features and then it's just a game of connect the dots so to speak👍
Hi on what site did you get the paper template for your table leg
The pdf can be purchased here: woodshopmike.com/product/farmhouse-table-leg-template/
You'll need to print it off on multiple 8.5" x 11" sheets and tape them together to make a plywood template.
Hi
I am interestedin mass production of table legs. Is it possible to produce more than 1 leg & copy another leg without drawing?
Thanks
You may be able to get a duplicator attachment for your lathe. 👍
I want to learn how to do this!!!
Woodturning is one of my favorite things to do in the shop! 😃😃
Thanks for the info. grizzly lathe duplicator.
how long is your lathe machine for woodturning table leg?
It's 32" between centers
Subbed
Thank you so much!
Cool!
Thank you! 👍🏻
Hubby does lathe work. He would love a duplicator, too. But this might help him be more precise. Right now he uses visual.
Hope it helps!!
Hello I am interested in this item just need them different size .
Hi David,
Shoot me an email at mike@woodshopmike.com and we can discuss!
Hi Mike,
How thick is the wood at the beginning?
Nice video 👏👏 very useful 🙏
Thank you, I'm glad the video was helpful! Since this design has a pommel the stock starts at the dimension of the square section at the top and bottom. I believe this leg was 3-1/2" square and 29-1/4" long.
Random question.
I am starting to get orders from far away and I am going to have to ship my table tops instead of deliver. What company do you use to ship your products?
I've not personally shipped any of my work, but I've heard decent things about Uship. Lemme know what works for ya!
I'm going to make my own table out of an oak my dad cut down in his yard. I was wondering how to make matching legs. Thanks.
Very cool! Glad you found the video 😃😃
Nice job.... i use a tool called a duplicator
Thank you very much! Yes, I'd love to have a duplicator. For now I reckon it's a story stick and a pair of calipers 👍🏻😃
How long did this take you? Thx for the vid
I don't turn very often these days, but I average about 40 minutes a leg
Please say how long it takes to sculpt a complete leg ?
They take me about 30-60 minutes depending on how recently I've done some turning 😂
What lathe do you use?
Hi Linda! This is an older Powermatic 3250. I found it on Facebook marketplace for a great price. Definitely not a lathe I could have purchased new at this point 😃
I'm barely starting to turn just picked up a lathe from harbor freight
Awesome! Hope you have a ton of fun!
Great video on turning. I would like to point out however, the way you cut those blanks to length on your table saw is extremely dangerous. That is exactly how the worst table saw injuries happen. Look into cross cutting on a table saw and kickback.
Thank you! It's not easy to see, but I'm using a miter gauge 👍🏻
Muito bom, Mike!
Muchas gracias!! 😃
Is there any way you could make a custom table leg for me and ship it? One of the legs broke in the move 😩
Sure could. Send me an email with a picture and dimensions of what you're needing and we can go from there. Mike@woodshopmike.com
Where do you find table leg templates to purchase online?
The template for the leg in this video is on my site here:
bit.ly/2PYuUss
@@WoodshopMike i noticed that template was on your link. But where could I find more templates? Do they sell them anywhere online or do you have different options not shown on your site?
Not sure if there are other places that sell them. This is the only one I currently have though.
Gosh I wish. No matter how many RUclips videos I just don’t get it
Hi Mike, awesome work! whats the measurement of these legs and whats the wood type?
Thank you! The legs are maple and I don't honestly remember the dimensions. I think they started from 4" square stock and were 28" long.
This was usuful thanks.
Glad to hear it! Thank you!
That was not clear to me.
Sorry to hear that, what part wasn't clear? Happy to talk through the process 👍
