I had a few people ask about USB hubs and whether or not that would allow for more connections. I did try a few hubs and unfortunately the Cloud Pod didn't recognize storage devices attached to them.
A very interesting product with may be a lot of potential. I don't think this particular product is fully realized yet so it will be curious to see how it evolves.
10:50 if I wanted to be super careful about not corrupting a drive before ejection, I would remove the network cable first and then wait a sec before pulling out any drives.
My question is... if my editor works in another country, what does he need in order to connect to my cloud pod and collaborate on the same project with me? Just Google Drive / Dropbox access or another cloud pod?
_Loved_ the pure simplicity of this. It'd be great if we had something like this but with much lower specs & price sold as a consumer version since NAS are ridiculously expensive even without drives. I don't want to maintain DIY Raspberry Pi devices. Security concerns are real. I can already picture malware jumping between computers and one ransomware-infected device encrypting the drive.
I love the idea of this but wish it could do more. Four USB-C ports with support at least 10Gbps performance per drive, better security etc. Basically a NAS but instead of plugging in SATA drives, I could plug in portable SSD's and make a RAID out of it.
Hi there, I would like to know how did you manage to remotely read files from Dropbox into a computer that is not on same network as yours? I know you did a demo with finalCut however, the designs makes more sense on Davinci Resolve for collabs purposes, I only got stuck into understanding …. How can access files from a remote place with only your application without any of the drives or being on the local network?
Can I buy this and stick it in on an unmanaged switch that is plugged into three blackmagic hyperdecks and all that going into a Mac mini instead of a network?
Too expensive for what You get in return, but cool tech nonetheless I really like the dashboard. Sucks that it doesn’t support ntfs or APFS and lacks security features such as authentication or encryption. Hopefully the next iteration has usb3 10 gbps and better security and support for more file systems.
Can you connect a hub and utilize more than 2 drives? I realize that any drives connected to the hub would share bandwidth for that port. Or is the OS in the device limited to supporting only 2 drives? Too bad it's only USB 3.1 gen 1 on each port, but if it supported USB 3.1 gen 2, (10gb) then if you tried to access both drives at the same time, you would max out the 10gb ethernet. I would connect hardware raid enclosures like the Orico 5-bay USB RAID enclosure. How would that monitor display look with two 80TB volumes attached? Price does seem a bit steep for IT enthusiasts and there are better options for "us", but it looks like a decent product for its target audience and they are willing to pay the Blackmagic "tax" for sure.
are there any simple ways to add an external drive to a Firestick or older FireTV to run apps from? That's the main thing I don't like about the Firesticks and my older FireTV.
I know this review is 2 years old, but it occurs to me that this thing is around the same price as a second hand M1 mac mini. May as well just run that with a cron job to do sync. At least then I can take advantage of using backblaze instead of dropbox or BM cloud. Its a lot cheaper. Hell, I could even install NextCloud on a VPS and use that (which can presumably also use backblaze S3 storage). I think the m1 mini is only 2.5gb ethernet but so what. you're limited by the crappy usb-c gen 1 ports on the pod anyway.
I’ve lost count of how many of your videos I’ve seen. One great one after another. The fact that I’m still not understanding the use case is probably on me. I trust that if I needed this device it (the use ) would already be known to me. I do have MacPros with 10Gb cards and a Synology, also 10Gb. But not multiple people editing video. Either way, you are a great RUclips celeb. Be well, Lon.
interesting but expensive, everyone has drives laying around doing mostly nothing or sometimes a backup. So i think this idea is good. Lets see how this develops.
Hi, Thanks for review. Have one question, is it possible to connect BM Cloud Pod directly to iMac 2020 with 10GB port? It seems to be nice option to expanding poor iMac USB-C I/O with this device. Please let me know. Thanks!
The reviewer has now answered in pinned comments. "I had a few people ask about USB hubs and whether or not that would allow for more connections. I did try a few hubs and unfortunately the Cloud Pod didn't recognize storage devices attached to them."
Hi Lon. Just rewatching your old videos and found this one -- isn't this product reduntant?! Should have mentioned that any wi-fi router that has a USB port could do the exact same thing.
My Securty Solution of this Machine is, to connect it directly with the Ethernet cable to my Mac Studio. Maybe that sounds strange but i use it as a Single Person. And it is not extensiv, just about 100 bugs, if you can sell the Blackmagic Studio Licence, which is included in any Blackmagic Hardware. And it is faster than any Harddisc Solution i ever had. Also i love that Screen-Thing. Until i bought the Cloud Pod, i used a Qnap. And this is really slow, and it is complicated. What are both things which i dont like. And in my kind of usage, it is an advantage that there is no security. Because in a real simple Point of View, i use it as an USB-hub, which is connected via Ethernet Port. And i‘ve never seen an usb-hub with username ans password.
Mine doesn’t go over 40mb write and like 10mb read. No idea what am I doing wrong. Hardware: - Cloud pod - Sandisk Extreme Pro v2 - OWC 10gbe adapter - Netgear switch with two 10G ports - MacBook M1 Everything separate works fine, it seems to be my cloud pod what doesn’t work.
Has no one worked with the type of A.V people who Blackmagic target? It's even in their promo material "Plus you don't need IT consultants as it's easy to use.".
Too expensive and too limited … 5g in 2022 is bordering on ridiculous, however you look at it… and connecting nvme drives to it is an exercise in futility
I am a little disappointed that the Cloud Pod is limited to 5GBE due to the speed of the USB-C gen. 1. Feels a bit like false advertising since it states 10GBE speeds everywhere!
Too big, too expensive and too slow. The 10 Gbps LAN port makes no sense when the combined USB-C ports only do 1 Gbps. Nice idea, but there will be no market for this. Lots of people have 1 USB port on their internet router that does the same and comes for free.
As we demonstrated in the video we were pulling 6-8 gigabits per second over the network. Not quite to the full potential of the 10 gig connection but certainly more than a single gigabit.
I think it a cute idea and fun little device. However, this product is lots of money for a totally outdated technology in terms of its communication Interfaces. What good is this for any of the 60% of the world market (especially gamers) that haver NVMe PCIe Gen 4 SSD’s with Thunderbolt 4 or USB 4 external drives that Sequentially read at 6,500MB/sec? Just think someone with two basic Sabrent 8TB Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 Gen 4 PCIe M.2 drives in an external Thunderbolt 4 carrier where each drive has a Sequential Read speed of 7100 MB/sec = 56.8 Gb/sec per drive that measly little 10GbE Interface is like trying to slurp down a thick DQ (Dairy Queen) Blizzard with a 1-millimeter-wide straw. Not really to useful. Even the today’s lowly SanDisk Extreme v2 Portable SSD has sequential reads at 1,000MB/sec (8Gb/sec) so the BM device is choking it off at 5Gb/sec and its using way out of date USB 3.0 technology. In my opinion the minimum spec for a device of this in 2022 is USB 3.2 Gen 2 or preferably a Thunderbolt4 / USB 4.0 which is what I run on all my standard Dell Laptops and Dell SFF (small form factor) Precision Workstations. Even my Gen 4 Dell laptops connect to my Native 25GbE/sec Core home Network through 10GbE and 25GbE Ethernet connections and these are just laptops. Soon, the PCIe Gen 5 products will be available, so the BM Device is like purchasing a 1080p TV set in a world filled with 4K & 8K TVs & Monitors, I have the Dell 8K UP3218K Monitor. In other words, BM is totally outdated in every way. Paying the $400 for the BM USB to NAS don’t think so, much smarter to get buy an external QNAP TS-464T4-G8 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 real NAS for your Network. Plus, you can add a 50Gb/sec (7,250MB/sec) Network card to the TS-464T4. So, it can almost keep up with your Thunderbolt 4 interface 40Gb/sec (5,000MB/sec.
I had a few people ask about USB hubs and whether or not that would allow for more connections. I did try a few hubs and unfortunately the Cloud Pod didn't recognize storage devices attached to them.

The dashboard is giving me serious (positive) flashbacks to sitting and watching hard drives defragment on early Windows machines.
Ah yes, the norton disk doctor days.
Made me think of That Old Black Magic. Classic by Louis Prima and Keely Smith.
10:50 if I wanted to be super careful about not corrupting a drive before ejection, I would remove the network cable first and then wait a sec before pulling out any drives.

For security use VLAN to separate your video network from the rest of the network.

Some of my LAN is 10gb. Might come in handy. Too bad about the drive speed.
How do you have all those options for file size on BM disk speed test?!? Mine only goes up to 5GB
They should make an update where you can put a password on it.
Is there a way to access a Synology DS1821+ with the Cloud Pod on the same network?

Watch the video 13:35 - very easy to understand. What are you confused about?
@@8020Alive - thanks, rewatched that section. A pretty narrow use case, I guess.

i agree, expensive. you can find 2 bay NAS for cheaper price

What stops a person from connecting a drive to a Mac and sharing it over a 10G connection? The only thing here that is in the cloud is dropbox?
can you connect a USB Hub to it and add more storage to it?
Do you understand usb?

No, that is not at all correct, there are zero Wi-Fi routers with 5gbps USB-C ports and 10gbps ethernet.
Anyone know if it's possible to access this drive over the network with a mobile phone like Android
Can I connect to the cloud pod from a remote location?
Set up a local VPN - there's little security on the pod so I wouldn't make it publicly accessible.
