    Wow. My gosh, this answered ALL my questions about the Pod. I’ve learned enough over the past years to “get” what you’re saying about each of the factors you presented. But I had a lot of questions about the various use cases of the Pod itself and its integration into a collaborative work flow. Now I get it, exactly. You’re da man! Subscribed.

    Your videos get better and better Chadwick. I tried the cloud version and it is really fun. I just need a team.
    Are there any special needs or procedures for dropbox use between editors? Does every editor need a special or paid dropbox account? How does "autosync" work in real life? Are Google drive and Dropbox sync not really connected to the DR cloud process and the box automates the steps?
    Thanks for all you do.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад +2

      Hi Kevin! You are too kind, but I love hearing from you. Great to hear you've been giving the version 18 beta a try. I think the main thing about "dropbox procedures" is making sure whoever is doing a final export, gets a hold of the camera originals at some point. They have made it pretty straightforward with options to choose the sync direction.
      Regarding the drive and dropbox sync, I think I understand what you're asking. Basically the computer doesn't need to have those apps on them or running. The Cloud pod does all the login and syncing. Hope this helps and you have a great day!

      @@CreativeVideoTips Indeed re: SSD recording! I have a 6K pro and I record via the usb 3.x port to a portable NVMe drive enclosure (about the size of a disposable vape). I can take the NVMe out of the enclosure and plug it directly into the PC via a PCIe expansion card... or use the USB cable. Fast and faster!
      I basically created a de facto pod using my network and a business continuity device that stores backups locally and in the cloud. BMD's device looks to be something I'd add down the road once the weather breaks here in San Antonio and we start doing location shoots again.

    Awesome video Chadwick! It contains all the information I needed, I still can't believe that they came up with such an easy and affordable solution. I've been looking at buying a NAS for a while now, mostly for the server aspect, but the up-front cost and complexity is a bit too much for our small team. This cloud Pod seems to be the perfect solution. We can instantly have a 8TB server with very little complexity and easy to bring around when we are shooting events on multiple days that require same-day editing. So pumped about this all thing!
    Again thank you for your video, it's always very well put together, we have a lot to learn from you ahah

    Thanks mate, great video. The lack of proper USB-C, or even better, Thunderbolt, is a killer. You’re really limited on capacity and of course performance. I have an investment in a TB3 NVMe RAID with massive bandwidth, and using this would cut that down dramatically, from 18,000 mbps to 5,000 mbps - assuming the USB-C gen 1 actually sustains that (and it won’t). I need to explore the proxy app more; you did say something that is NOT handled if you’re doing proxies in resolve itself, and that’s handling (syncing) of the non-video files. Do you know if the proxy app does that? As it currently stands I have to manually move anything that Resolve doesn’t make a proxy of into the Dropbox that my remote editor uses. I agree with your assessment that they missed the mark on a few things here that would have made it much better. But I suppose they are leaving room for the big CloudStores. Thanks again!

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад

      Hi Joseph, thanks for the thoughtful comment. Yes this would drastically cut your speeds down, so I don't think the pod is a great idea for anything outside of these small nvme usb drives. But for that, it's pretty slick. I should have been more clear about the non-video files. I think this is a gem that makes the cloud stores and pods (which will likely all work the same) regarding syncing - is that the pod will push everything in a folder, with the exception of the big camera originals if you check the box for proxies only.
      This is ideal, because you can point the sync folder to a root project level folder on both ends, keep your original big files on your local SSD, and the blackmagic device is smart enough to send over everything except for the big honkin orignal video files. So you can edit with all the extra assets on the other end. You just get to skip the step of uploading and downloading the big files.
      Without this device, you would manually need to manage the location of the proxy files and make sure to not include your originals in a synced folder.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph 2 года назад

      @@CreativeVideoTips Yeah, that is the advantage. So I need the big one. I mean… I DON'T NEED IT!!! haha Of course if BMD can make the Proxy app work that way, then problem solved.

    Hey I've been curious about one of these vs a NAS especially if I already have a NAS. I don't know if it's worth another video or not, but what would be reasons for cloud pod vs an already owned Synology NAS? I'm wondering if it's better for syncing files because the cloud sync app on the Synology NAS can't use USB as a source for syncing unless I have the computer sync while mounted. From the same network, no syncing necessary of course. Are there also settings where it can generate proxies upon syncing? I guess the ultimate question I'm asking is would this be good to have if I already have a NAS.

      Hi Mark, I'm not so sure you could use your Qnap with the cloud pod. My guess is your Qnap allows you to plugin a hard drive and see that through the qnap server. Instead the cloud pod acts like your Qnap does, but without any internal storage. You plug an external drive into the cloud pod.
      However if you can mount your Qnap like an attached disk and not a server volume then I suppose that could work.

    The usb-c 3.2 has some other quirks inside which can make problems usb 3.1 or 3.0 has this not.
    The cloud pod basically entry to the bigger world cloud devices from black magic. But hear is also question what future revision of the software will bring since Black magic is not a traditional NAS or SAN provider, but there is a lot potential in this marked.
    Also for my is big question the HDMI port if it will stay to burn continuously the black magic GUI in your monitor or it will bring you in future some additional controllers e.g. from TV Remote.

    Thank you for that! Watched both your videos on project colab in Davinci. My question is this:
    What if your editor already has the proxy files & footage, is it not possible in Davinci to only share the project file (updated in real time on the cloud) but each editor decides where the footage lives on their computer? You can do this in Premiere but in Davinci it seems like you need to have the files, or the proxies at least, onto the Pod or the Cloud (with paid storage -2gb free, 500gb $15/mth).

    Thanks for the video, super helpful! At 3:37 you mention that the exports will still use the original footage so long as the originals are attached to your computer. Does this mean that a remote editor, working off your system that you have setup to sync "Only Proxies" via Dropbox will not have the ability to render out the full quality thing? Or would it render on the local machine using the original files instead of on their remote machine?

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад

      Hi Beau. It will only use footage locally connected. So if it’s just proxies on your local drive it will use those, but if you push originals over the web to the other computer it will use those. It just can’t pull only during export though.

    • @GabrielPassarelliG
      @GabrielPassarelliG Год назад

      You can ask for whoever has the original footage to render locally the timeline, given you both are using the same project inside a cloud database. If the setup is done well, you can create the render job in the queue and they just press Render.

    I'm not a big networking guy so sorry if this is a dumb question. What does this do that plugging an ssd into my 3rd(?) gen thunderbolt port on my laptop can't do? I can set Resolve to auto clone (per your instructions on a prior video...thank you, that has been quite helpful) to a folder and sync that folder to Dropbox or Drive. Presumably this can be done with the proxy generator as well. I don't *think* this is required to use the cloud collab feature.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад +1

      Not a dumb question at all, this is a question I kept asking as soon as it was announced. The 2 things this does that your ssd by itself can't do are:
      1 - provide a local network storage for multiple people in the same network to word from that SSD (without sharing it from a computer)
      2 - sync only proxy files to cloud service, without needing to parse them out or extract them from the default location next to the big originals, saving cloud storage space and time

    this cloud pod looks great, but how is it different from for example a "SILEX TECHNOLOGY DS-700AC USB 3.0 Device Server"?, except from the monitor out option?

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад

      Wow Rick! I had never scene this device server you mentioned before. I bet the cloud pod was modeled after this! Without having used the silex box my assumption is you basically gain the blackmagic software and firmware which not only has the monitor out option, which is kind of an odd novelty - I'd rather this work over an IP address than an HDMI port, but it's software ability to sync only proxies to dropbox when created with the proxy generator app. It's just less manual placing and locating files.

  • @richnationfilms
    @richnationfilms Год назад +1

    okay so i can connect the pod to a secured network (at work) and copy files to the pod but then how can i share them remotely ? i wouldn't be able to access them from home if i can't tap into the work server right? so that's where dropbox and google drive come in? the files can be copied to the cloud pod but at the end of the day still have to be uploaded to google drive or drop box in order to access. Am I understanding this correctly? if that's the case can it be setup to automaically upload to google drive/drop box anything that's copied to the pod? thanks

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  Год назад +1

      Yes that is a correct understanding. This box will upload to dropbox or google drive. I use google drive. Once its plugged in and has internet it is always watching a sync folder you specify to upload when files are put on it. One of the best advantages to do this over the google drive only app is that it can push only proxies to your cloud service and also include the non video assets.

    I suspect your comment of being willing to pay a "little" more for faster USB C is exactly why they implemented the gen1 standard. There would be a significant price increase to employ 10gb USB C. Sure, it may only be $5 for the USB C controller chip. But the significant cost would be adding a load balance processor and the firmware associated. Without load balancing, one drive could completely saturate the 10G NIC.
    Then one could debate whether it would've been better to have a single Gen2 or dual Gen1 ports. Dual ports likely increases the market for the product significantly. And the higher speed file transfers can be accomplished by connecting the drive to a workstation eliminating the need for high speed on the cloud pod.
    Overall, I can't fault them in that design choice. The big miss for me is not having RAID 0 and/or 1 capability built-in. That alone makes this more of a hobbyist solution or a stop-gap solution for a new business.
    Enjoy your videos Chadwick!

      That's a great insight Matt! I actually hadn't considered the idea of the rest of the components to balance the throughput of that single 10ge nic. I wonder if a future firmware upgrade could give the ability to create a raid out of the jbod disks down the road? I could see a great use case for this system for quick turn around live conference production aside from the smaller indie remote content creator case which I think it was built for.

    🧐 Questions: Would this work for our NAS DiskStation DS1821+? If so, would just the 10G ethernet port work or do we need to use one of the 4 USB-C ports on the NAS?
    Second question, needing a computer to create proxies, would it be best to use a networked computer in the Lab or could we use a computer located in one of our remote offices? Reason for asking is we don't have any computers at the lab where the NAS resides because of risk of theft. We all use our laptops to do collaborations while in the Lab.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips  2 года назад +1

      Great questions Jack - Regarding the 1821 - I haven't used that before, but I don't think so. The NAS would need to be connected with the USB port, but my understanding on most of those systems is that the USB is to mount data on it, and not send data out of it. I can't say for sure though. But basically the cloud pod needs to see a drive as if it is a Direct attached storage disk, not a NAS to do the Cloud syncing.
      The proxy generating computer can be anywhere as long as it's paired with a cloud pod or cloud store. The catch here is that you'll want original footage loaded into a project, before adding the proxy footage to the project. I'm hoping there is a workaround to this order needing be this way in a future update though.

      @@CreativeVideoTips Hmmm..I have another thought as to why they might have used USB3 Gen1. Are the ports on separate independent USB interfaces or on a single shared USB interface? If they are separate interfaces then both drives could be accessed remotely at each ports maximum speed simultaneously with out any risk of bandwidth bottle-necking each other, where as if they had been USB3 Gen2 then one would have risked being throttled whenever the other drive was accessed. Of course if they are a single shared interface then they would risk throttling at a much lower speed.

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 2 года назад

      @@CreativeVideoTips in a related thought to my last post, if they are on independent interfaces then one might be able to put certain types of data on each drive independently. Like one drive could be dedicated to sound, music and images and the other drive dedicate to videos. Given the way Resolve works and how the cloud pod/stores seems to work I would think that isn't the most ideal workflow; however, an alternative, and rather rough idea is to alternate projects between the drives. So while one group of people is editing & grading on drive A, a second group of people are gathering media for the next production on Drive B without ever interfering with each other. Then swap drives. and repeat.

    Now the 10GBE can present a unique problem if you remain with a 1 gbe network and do not upgrade $$$ to 10GBE immediately. You did not see it because you used a MacBook. I used the Mac Studio Max with a 10GBE output. It kept connecting and disconnecting to the Cloud Pod. It also did the same with the ATEM Mini Pro ISO ??? I switched things and cables - no relief. Finally, I found a post online with the Studio. Seems in Settings - network and equipment setting it is on Automatic. You have to disconnect the ethernet from the Studio - change the setting to manual setup and then 1000Mbs and use all the settings that come up. Then everything works smoothly - seems the Studio wants to switch automatically network speeds and that screws things up. So setting the speed manual cures that.

      Hi Joe, as a single user it's a toss up. That's great you have unlimited google storage! I'm excited about this update coming because I'd like to eventually let go of my paid dropbox account and stick with google drive.
      I'm not fully understanding the question though, but hopefully I can help clarify. Yes resolve and blackmagic proxy generator can create render and create proxies on original footage stored on a nas. "Blackmagic Cloud" is there new cloud based project library/database that only stores the project files, no media files. The "Cloud Pod, or Cloud Store" operate as their own nas that has a special feature to link directly to dropbox/google and push proxy only files back and forth.
      You will always be editing from a local copy of the footage, either originals or proxies - this device is just a means to help simplify the uploading and downloading of those files.
