  • An election night special re-release!
How involved is the LDS church in Utah politics? Has it always been this way? In a recent LDS Conference talk, we learned about President of the Seventy, B. H. Roberts and his run for an 1895 congressional seat. This chapter in church history needs more daylight shone on it.
At odds with the brethren over the church’s interference with the election, B.H. Roberts was suspended from ecclesiastical office and eventually forced to sign The Political Manifesto of 1895 or face excommunication. For those who doubt the relationship between church and state in the early church, this is just one of many examples of the LDS faith's influence and control over politics in Utah and beyond.
Mormonish Podcast cohosts Rebecca and Landon are joined again by church history buff, Master Peace (Ron Yorgason), as we delve deeper into the ongoing conflict between church and state as Utah struggled to gain statehood. We can’t believe some of the information we uncovered, and neither will you!

Hi Rebecca from gramar natzi; The abbreviation “i.e.” stands for id est, which is Latin for “that is.” The abbreviation “e.g.” stands for the Latin phrase exempli gratia, meaning “for example.”

      Poor things.
Honestly, Landon, All I have ever heard from you - or from j.d. even - is only the astonishment that reason cannot help having - and should have - in the bold face of the incomprehensibly absurd.
Part of that reaction is the effort of trying to grasp that a thing has been said, or done, or taught.
We are so profoundly afflicted by having been taught that we must be stone-carved, soul- less numbed-out creatures that the tiniest squeak that comes out of our nostrils as a gasp is accounted "ranting".
Better an honest raving-lunatic rant than those smiling honey-dripping lips and insipid aphorisms of the Serpent.
BRAVA to Rebecca when she lets fly! I don't mean that we should behave like drunken sailors on a regular basis. But there are times WHEN IT IS TIME to crack whips and toss over tables.
Thank you both for going out onto that treacherous limb (and following it to its end betimes!). 🐦

The best feature of Legislative MIRACLES is that they circumvent or forefend any requirement of sub-
    mission to civil law. 🐙🐙

This comment isn’t about the current episode, but I heard Rebecca mention that you’ll be covering beet farming on the podcast soon. I come from a family of pioneer beet farmers in Idaho, and I’m curious about how beet farming in Utah compares to Idaho, especially regarding the church’s involvement. I absolutely love what you guys do-thanks!

The sugar beet industry corruption and the LDS is Landon's pet project! We are definitely working on it. We've even been taking pictures of beet factories all around! The LDS church completely took advantage of those farmers and got in trouble federally for price fixing! It was a huge scandal that no one knows anything about!

A younger brother of mine was foolish enough to get drunk in high school with 12 of his Mormon friends. They were busted due to the crazy amount of empty liquor bottles found at the scene. My brother admitted to his bishop his guilt. His friends all lied. Consequently he was unable to graduate from seminary while his friends all graduated. He thought it par for the course, and went on to serve a mission, but all brothers younger than him, out of disgust and disappointment, did not. Punishing integrity and rewarding deception did not go unnoticed. By their fruits ye shall know them was their only response.

Haha! I hope you're kidding. Ron's whole "snobby" look and set is a parody of the old PBS classic "Masterpiece Theater" with Alistair Cook. All very top drawer, old chap! Ron himself is a really funny, brilliant, genuine guy who we love having on Mormonish!
