Learn Revit, learn building code, become obsessed with creating digital models that reflect actual buildings. I just fixed a building where the architect didn’t account for 1/4” FRP panels on each side of a corridor. Earlier this year I had to fix a design where the interior granite wall extended past the curtain wall to the exterior. Architect didn’t account for the difference in thickness of the granite inside and out. Working now to redesign a residential project where the architect didn’t get a site plan for a large remodel and extension. House was 1.5 feet inside the 5 foot setback. Late last year redesigned a large assisted living facility because the kitchen placement left the exhaust fan, makeup air, and evaporative cooler in view from the main entry…. Know code, know how things are constructed, know how to get it into a model… I mean get into that now and during school and after graduation.
if you're learning auto cad you should *only* be using keyboard shortcuts. you should try and aim to use your mouse as little as possible in autocad to be as efficient as possible. i'm two years in and i don't even know where most of the tools are in the toolbars
Everyone has their preferences. I'd say that you're better off using toolbars only for things you do constantly if the command is long or awkward to type. You're generally not going to type faster than you can click one button on a mouse. I predominately use keyboard commands, but toolbars have their use too. If you're looking through menus for commands that's super-slow. I only do that if it's something I almost never use and don't remember the command. (Coming from 20 years experience in CAD as a land surveyor)
Wow. Loved this video, I’m starting college in a couple of months and these are helpful tips! Btw Mooch, one recommendation I give you is to introduce yourself on the videos, I know it sounds little but makes a huge difference on getting news followers. I'm currently at a community college and I plan on transferring to a University in a few years. I've really been pondering what I want to do for the past few months. I started with Communications, then changed my major to to Graphic Design, but after taking a few Art History courses I started to fall in love with buildings and how they were structured (especially because of the Gothic style Cathedrals in France). I guess I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. And for those who still don't know what they're doing or can't figure it out, just know it's okay to experiment. It takes time to find something that makes you passionate, but it's a process you shouldn't rush. Have a nice day

By all means, learn 3ds Max, Maya, or Blender first. But it's kind of like trying to ride a bike for the first time. They'll say try with training wheels first. You don't HAVE to. But you should. If you want to sleep the wheels cause you feel they will hold you back, then you have that right. It's just a general rule of thumb. 😃🍻
@@Moochers yes but is sketchup and co. better for architecture than blender and co? Are there some unique functions which help doing architectural renders? 🙂🥨🍻
@@bogdanavramenko9872 Blender in my opinion is the best for Rendering and animating. I've never used the program so I'm not sure if it's good for architecture but I've see then results of movies and renders made from it and it's incredible. I've used 3ds Max and Maya. Both are amazing for rendering and creating "organic" architecture. I found that 3ds Max was best for making architecture. Maya felt better for making objects like jewelry. Both programs, I only used for about 1 month or two each though so I am no expert. Revit is the most effecient program I've run into. It creates all the plans while you make the model. In other words, you just focus on building the 3D and it creates all the plans for you. Simply amazing. But Revit architecture tends to be very orthogonal. If you want to create crazy shapes, it will be tough unless you can dominate it's mass modeling or learn to use Dynamo (which I have not). Short answer to your question, they all work , they are all tools, it depends what your style is and what you want to accomplish.
Thank you!! I'm actually split between interior design and architecture but last year I got so into architecture videos and the form of the buildings I find myself staring at and amaze how they design it. I have a question though, I actually started drawing some of my own modern houses and such (even though there's no exact measurements since I still have no knowledge about it) should I stop? Since some of my friends told me that I should saved it for college since I might lose my inspiration to it.
Your friends have got it all backwards! I hope you didn't stop! Drawing and putting your ideas down on paper will only continue to further your creativity!
i'm sort of confused as to how you become an architect in the US, in Sweden you do a bachelor+masters after which you're a qualified architect (you can apply for the title of architect after two years of work through the architects union though which is like a quality guarantee) do you have to take a test to receive the title of architect in the US? i don't understand how it works
Hello Mooch, I'm a junior in highschool and have been working towards becoming an architect, however the official lisencing kind of confuses me. I live in America, not sure if you could explain how this test works? Does my college do it? does my job do it? etc. Thanks and love your videos!
This vid is too accurate... especially with the money part. My current laptop can barely handle AutoCAD so I made the decision to buy a custom pc that could handle all the programs Im currently using. (AutoCAD, illustrator, photoshop, indesign, ArcGIS) The total came out to a little over $1000 but I think its worth the investment
I think we are lucky in Greece, seems unrealistic that you don't have to learn how to create floor plans to get in architecture school. In my country it is mandatory at the exams.
This video is really helpful. Thank you! i have one question, when u say sketching, do you mean artchitectural and building sketching or just drawing in general?
Thanks for giving advice about auto cad. (Just asking )how about blender 3ds max these are also great software for 3d modeling and design. Should we use them for modeling cuz they got way more features than rihno and sketch up.
First of all your videos are always beneficial and amazing and thanks you for that. Second i want to ask you that can someone transfer from architecture technology degree to architecture degree or not.
You combined sketching and floor plans. You want to sketch often. Also, you want to learn how to draw floor plans. Try to learn everything that is shown in a floor plan. Hint : it's not as easy as you think!
Are you an architect already or are you still studying? How much time did it take to you? I going to graduate on may of this year from high school , and im going to the community college of the city i live and going to study drafting and design technology, do you think this will help me.
I've graduated already and have been working in the field for four years. School takes about 5 to 6 years to complete and then your license can take 1-2 years if you make it a priority.
Do they teach classical architecture in all architecture schools? I really want to learn classical design and architecture since I absolutely detest contemporary styles (post-30s).
I heard that so often in school. I don't mind what others say about things that I like. I like Bjarke. His designs might not be as sophisticated as other architects, but what I love is that he's been able to get away with creating buildings that not most people could. A lot of architects might say they don't want his buildings, that they are an eye sore, that they don't work. I personally enjoy having buildings that don't look like the rest every once in a while.
Best video I've ever watched on guiding future architects, I can see your passion for guiding these young people like me.

- don't focus too much on complicated things because it can get too overwhelming
- make a video playlist about sketching (Use Mooch's playlist)
- watch to learn the techniques used
---the architect's on the videos are not focused on making their lines perfectly straight and making perfect sketches
- techniques on making the shadows and color make the sketches good

- Sketch on your own hand, always hand sketch
- Create a video playlist on architects making their own floor plans
- Learn different techniques on how to draw materials

I have a question though, I actually started drawing some of my own modern houses and such (even though there's no exact measurements since I still have no knowledge about it) should I stop? Since some of my friends told me that I should saved it for college since I might lose my inspiration to it.
I don't think you should stop. I say keep doing what you find enjoyable and keep learning !
Your friends have got it all backwards! I hope you didn't stop! Drawing and putting your ideas down on paper will only continue to further your creativity!
Amazing Video 👌 . Just a suggestion to keep the camera in front rather than keeping on the left. It's Better 😊
Thanks!
i'm sort of confused as to how you become an architect in the US, in Sweden you do a bachelor+masters after which you're a qualified architect (you can apply for the title of architect after two years of work through the architects union though which is like a quality guarantee)
do you have to take a test to receive the title of architect in the US? i don't understand how it works
Similar here. You get your degree, then do an internship and accumulate enough hours to take the ARE (6 exams) then you get your license :)
Hello Mooch, I'm a junior in highschool and have been working towards becoming an architect, however the official lisencing kind of confuses me. I live in America, not sure if you could explain how this test works? Does my college do it? does my job do it? etc. Thanks and love your videos!
Thanks for the compliment. I'll answer your question through a video soon so I could explain it in detail.
Thanks so much for this video, it has been really helpful!! Which Arc-history video should I watch first?
It doesn't matter the order. Go with what calls your attention 😃🍻
Appreciate bro
😃🍻
This vid is too accurate... especially with the money part. My current laptop can barely handle AutoCAD so I made the decision to buy a custom pc that could handle all the programs Im currently using. (AutoCAD, illustrator, photoshop, indesign, ArcGIS) The total came out to a little over $1000 but I think its worth the investment
That's great. Getting q new laptop is an awesome feeling. Enjoy 😃🍻
you dont use archicad in the us? we here in germany use only acad, photoshop and lumion. nothing else
I think we are lucky in Greece, seems unrealistic that you don't have to learn how to create floor plans to get in architecture school. In my country it is mandatory at the exams.
Depends on the school. I went to community college for undergrad so they didn't need that.
This video is really helpful. Thank you! i have one question, when u say sketching, do you mean artchitectural and building sketching or just drawing in general?
Me: Mooch I cant get a girlfriend
Mooch: Don't worry I have a playlist for you...
Hi hey man, can you make a vídeo telling us the best laptops to work the progams that you Talk about?
Thanks for giving advice about auto cad. (Just asking )how about blender 3ds max these are also great software for 3d modeling and design. Should we use them for modeling cuz they got way more features than rihno and sketch up.
A new video for laptops please!!
Yes! I have to make one soon... 😃🍻
What types of drawing pencils would you recommend? Thank you for this video.
First of all your videos are always beneficial and amazing and thanks you for that. Second i want to ask you that can someone transfer from architecture technology degree to architecture degree or not.
I'm not sure about that one. I would assume so, but I'm not 100%
What are the benefits of being in Architecture school (1st Year to 5th)
1. History
2. Design (watch, learn, do)
3. Sketch (move into floor plans)
4. Programs: Rhino, (auto)CAD, SketchUp
5. Learn Photography
6. Save Money
7. ???
i missed one. help.
Why does it take so many years to finish?
Do they teach classical architecture in all architecture schools? I really want to learn classical design and architecture since I absolutely detest contemporary styles (post-30s).
@mooch what kind of laptop do you recommend for architecture school?
A powerful one lol. Look at my other videos on laptops to get an idea.
Some say Bjarke is overrated. Any thoughts?
I heard that so often in school. I don't mind what others say about things that I like. I like Bjarke. His designs might not be as sophisticated as other architects, but what I love is that he's been able to get away with creating buildings that not most people could. A lot of architects might say they don't want his buildings, that they are an eye sore, that they don't work. I personally enjoy having buildings that don't look like the rest every once in a while.
