Sad thing these days young architects jumping straight into digital realm, forgoing sketching. Trying to think out of the box while using the box to do thinking. I know that's old talk, but well... Keep at it! Hope this will aspire more budding architects.

You don't NEED to be good at drawing. Most plans are done on the computer. Proficiency in artistic drawing is just an extra that can make you have higher marks in artistic classes at university, but there are very few of those. Regardless, it is always good to study artistic shadows etc for renders, as you will need to make them. Even if the computer does rendering for you, it still needs a human eye to correct/personalize details. But there is a difference with knowing how to draw and how to color. Because of time, you will mostly hand in digital drawings to your client too. For math difficulty you can ask what subjects will the course cover and fully learn them in your holidays/prior taking the course (to take the time you need to understand them). Ps: you can always improve in any area you want if you put the time and effort into it!
i’m on my second year of architecture and this video was extremely motivational yet intimidating at the same time. even though i know i’m only 18 and i still have an extremely long path ahead of me, the fear of not being able to get to this level always haunts me. i have the feeling there’s so much i don’t know (in terms of structures, softwares, technical details, materials etc) and i’m always afraid i won’t learn it all “in time” or whatever. but this very same intimidation i feel is what keeps me going. i really want to become the best architect i could possibly be and your channel has been an amazing motivation. thank you so much for the content and hugs from Brazil.

That was me as well , when people ask me “why do u want to do architecture?” Me: “It all started with sims 4” Them: *not sure whether to take me seriously or not*
Hi Eric, I’m italian and I’m in the first year of architecture. You convinced me to make this decision, this important decision. You are what i want to be in 10 or 15 years. Your life, your way of thinking are what inspire me. Good look for everything!

This life seems sort of laid back even though i know it’ll get pretty stressful sometimes, but this seems like the life I imagined for myself. Thank you for being an inspiration to begin something in my life while young
Your channel is the reason I started sketching and using my hands again as opposed to strictly using the computer - so thank you for being an inspiring source!!
Absolutely nailed it for me. Create, work that creation; work out; refine the work; process input and respond; escape--guitar or reading; wrap up; embrace family!
I’m a current high school student thinking about a future job in this career. It was interesting learning what someone who has this job does and makes me even more interested in pursuing this career. Thanks for making this video and giving an insight on what a day would be like.
I've been Designing for 34 years and I'm still learning, so ! With Architecture you don't go to Varsity, Graduate and you know everything, when you graduate you will find out that you actually know nothing, it comes with experience and TIME. It's ART, and you are forever evolving, learning new programs, new techniques, new styles, you have to be a people's person, you deal with the deepest being of total strangers. You get quite intimate with your clients, because you are designing their living space, where they are going to live, sleep, eat, etc. I am 90% of the time friend with my clients after designing their homes, you create a bond during designing their dreams. BUT ! it's not all glamorous, there's lots and lots of paper work involved, red tape, laws , bylaws to deal with, which does not always go the way you want it to go. Frustration, when you've spent hours and days, to design specific details, and the contractor will mess it up in half an hour flat, or the client will decide the feature is too expensive and omits it.
This came at a perfect time when I’m in the process of designing our first home! It’s a rainy Sunday morning in Auckland, New Zealand perfect for watching vlogs, reading books. How you live should be a major contributor of your design as well as consideration for your site and views and movement. Keep doing what you do 👌🏽
I've just found out your channel and I'm absolutely amazed with each one of your videos! I'm a young architect, almost graduating in architecture school, here in Brazil, and your vlogs are refilling me with the passion to begin my journey. I'm now sleepless because of your videos, and I thank you so much for this!
I’m a Koreans architect engineer and I wanna get into my english listening skill. Fortunately I found your youtube. Here is some great expectations for me.
As. Structural draftsman I have always enjoyed talking with architects more than engineers. I have found they tend to be more flexible on adjusting their thinking when told something is just not practical or maybe impossible with in the parameters given. Love these videos. Thank you for making them.
Ooh my God!! I'm running out of words. Erick, this is a top top notch Vlog from you. I really liked it. Content organization & quality, they all show how hardworking you are on making these videos and a future that is waiting for you. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. May God open doors for you and to all of us that are trying to imitate and learn from your content. Peace ✌️
I am an public architecture student from China. It is amazing that if I can live in the house which is designed by myself. It’s really a amazing experience! Thank you for your sharing!
i am an architect, junior architect. And I recommend you to choose something more relaxed. architecture is though, you will do crazy working hours, and be underpaid. I graduated from Venice, italy and now i am working in rotterdam. I am not some random guy, I have had experiences!
As someone who has zero experience, but a lot of ideas, your videos have been extremely inspiring. Your exceptional skills with your cameras, and design materials and your clear explanations of what you do have driven me to reach out to schools to begin my own creative journey. Having watched most of the videos you have put up, I feel I’ve learned a great amount from you about sketching, building models, clearing creative fog, and have a better idea about the details which affect each project. Your videos are very aesthetically pleasing, and I can’t say thank you enough for sharing what you do, and giving insight to the millions of people interested in your work and field of work. Fantastic job, and thank you again.
Right now I'm in high school and dreaming of becoming an architect. I have such respect for you and what you do. Being an entrepreneur, architect and doing youtube all at ones must take a lot of hard work, discipline and put pressure. That is just something I admire and really strive towards, being able to work hard for what I want and having that will. Thanx for the much inspiring and informative videos!!
Glad to see zero thumbs down on this one! Very nice story telling and I glad you remind us it's OK to break and change the pace of your day. Often this cannot be achieved working for someone else, but is still so crucial, especially during the creative process [or should I say, a partial block during the creative process]. I look forward to your vlog's, thanks for the dedication and hopefully to help demystify us Architect's to the world a little more with each video.
I'm an architect student near the beginning of my academic journey and watching your video really inspired me! I appreciate your lifestyle and you sharing it with us! I'm looking forward to creating something similar for myself!
I'm a Brazilian architect and I'm beyond happy to have found this channel! Hopefully the Architecture community will grow even more on RUclips. It's exciting and refreshing to see how fellow professionals around the world make our field more accessible to the public and how we can all share our unique experiences and knowledge in many different ways. Needless to say, I'm biased but architecture is indeed a captivating science. Thanks for sharing a bit of your daily life with us!
whenever I get tired and think about stop working ,I just come to this channel and get motivated to reach the things I've dreamed about . Thank you for sharing these sort of great videos , good luck man .
Hi I’m a 9th grader and my dream is to become a architect but I’m the worst at sketching or drawing and that makes think I’m not cut out to become a architect. Could you do a video where you tell us what it takes to become a architect or something?
Cantrelatesister if you want to specialize in classical architecture, it’s required to be good at drawing, but if you want to do modern architecture, drawing tringles, squares and rectangles will do the job.
Well also it is important to draw but in the course of studying architecture most of the time you ALSO get to develop the drawing skill, maybe from REALLY basic to moderate or moderate to excellent, it's all practice, you can also have the gift of already being good at it but also by practicing and really trying is great, if you don't really want to do it you might find it too boring or annoying, but don't get discouraged just because you're not a pro already! Also may I suggest civil engineer? If you like calculus and numbers it's kind of in the field of house/building making
Just take drawing classes. It’s easier than t looks once you understand the foundational concepts you’ll realize your dreams. I am also on your path, I haven’t gotten accepted into my dream school but hope to do so by improving my art skills. Goodluck! And pray to god we realize our dreams ♥️
Svendar i can tell you are not an architecture student or an architect, just by your answer. Specialize in classical architecture ? Do not give people bad advice if you dont know what you are talking. You take drawing lessons, that’s it. I started mine when i was in 11th grade. If you work really hard, 2 years its enough to learn the basics and get you into the school you want. You will then learn everything you need regarding designing a home in the next 6 years of school. Oh and, things like drawing and understanding perspective are critical if you want to be a good architect. Trust me, drawing rectangles and triangles will not “do the job”.
You dont need to draw like Da Vinci to become an architect. As long as you know how to draw perspectives and scale of objects, youll be fine. Also, theres computer softwares such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds max, rhino etc. To help you with modeling and drawing.
I'm an architecture student. I'm from Brazil. This video is very inspiring. It makes me think I'm on the right way. I'm in the very beginning of it all, there are so much things to happen; but I'm on my way. Thank you very much!
ive just started this kind of life, after workign a few years in a bunch of companies, i decided to work for myself, it's been tough, but it's worth it. thanks for shraing these moments with us, it's been both inspiring and overwhelming to feel there are some people out there, wanting and thinking the same things as i do...all the best...waiting for more videos

I am a 14 year old interested in architectural engineering. Ive done a lot of research about this career field but never heard from a architect. Thank you so much for this video, it helped me a lot and it gave me a good insight on what to expect.
i am only fourteen and i always draw houses and buildings after i use cardboard to make a structure of it and i love doing it all the time and i want to become an architect
Sleep while you can kid.... lmao i'm 17 and i just started architecture school and it's currently 3:08 am and here i am drawing a plan due tomorrow...😂😂
I have no idea what I want in life I love art and I’ve always been interested in architecture ever since I had to do a paper on the Romans architecture I really hope I start getting an idea of what I want to work towards, thank you so much! I think this will be some thing I may want to do!
I'm probably late for this, but I suggest you make a list of careers that interest you, and then list the pros and cons to each career, that way you can get an idea of which you prefer.
Your life mirrors my own except you are a much better and more thorough architect. I work from my home that I designed in 2003 and built over a period of a couple of years. Moved in in 2006. I work mainly on residential projects in a rural area. I like to get out to. mostly on the bike. Great vid. I especially relate to the hassle and distraction of emails, texts, etc. We need solitude and quite to create and that can also isolate us. You are definitely not alone. Another great video that has inspired me greatly. 👍
Patrick Daly I’ve taken to checking emails once an hour and replying once a day. Two monitors lends itself to having email open all day - doesn’t work for me anymore
i'm so happy i found your channel. I'm an architecture student just about to graduate y May, but lately i've kinda lost my drive and passion for the career. Watching your video just reminded me how much i love it. Thank you so much
This video was calming but also stressful for a 15 year old wanting to take on engineering or architecture. I am good at maths and drawing but I feel I’d struggle for time management. How do you find time to do little tasks you set yourself without becoming distracted or not doing anything? I love the life he lives and I strive to become as advanced as he is and have as much motivation as him. Thank you for this inspirational video! 🙌
Best advice I have is to not compare yourself to a professional with 26 years in practice. I have many years of school (5 yrs) + training (5 years of internship) and then passing licensing exams and years studying under others until I opened the practice you see in the video. This only comes from investing the time to learn, practice, and fail; repeatedly. Don't let the challenge of it deter you, instead let the possibility of it inspire you to action. Good luck!
thnks for sharing this , really love this video, im an architecture students and still new, sometimes when i get too stressed with my design, i almost give up and loss my passion in architecture , after watching this , it brings back my spirit to continue designing
Love this video. I've been at an impasse over the last 2 years. Struggling to decide if I should pursue an architecture career for myself. I know on a deep down level that it would be a great fit for me and I believe I have all of the personality traits and the work ethic necessary to be good at it, but I've had so many people discourage me from it. I've also done some research and found that it can be a very hard field to break in to. And I've heard first hand stories of people regretting going to school for it. But my heart is still telling me to give it a try. The logical side of my brain thinks it's most likely a huge risk. Anyway, sorry to be that weird anonymous person that spills there guts on the internet to strangers, but just wanted to thank you for making these videos, they're great insight and might help me along in the process of deciding what to do. Geez life choices. Lol
Reading the comments about architecture makes me feel at ease. I grew up drawing a lot of maps and that led to architecture. I love to play sims and build houses for fun. I'm a senior in high school and I can't wait to go to college to be an architect 📐
love this, im studying Architecture right now and its just great to know that taking a mental break isn't you slacking off or being overwhelmed. Love the content
Excellent stuff, thx. In the old days, before the digital life, I would often put my phone in the fridge and put on the headphones before starting the design process. Cheers, Adam.
I have to say that as an emerging interior designer I really appreciate your videos. They help me manage my time for doing my portfolio, and give me ideas on doing things differently. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
Awesome video and very informative as always. It's always great to get insight into someone else creative process. A walk in the snow looks really fun.
Awesome vlog Eric!!! I have question: During the whole design and construction process do you work by yourself? Or do you have remote assistants of some sort?
thanks my friend...currently i'm a team of one (on the architecture side), but of course there are other collaborators, i have engineers, surveyors, landscape, electrical and contractors that all contribute to making the work possible... not sure how much longer that will be sustainable as even just producing these vids is pretty time-consuming (as you know!)
Wow!! I can only imagine!!! Top notch videos and on top of that full architectural projects, kudos to you! I strive one day to get your level of expertise and discipline, congrats on another great video!
Might be time to do what Karin Bohn (another awesome youtuber / creative) has done. Look at her channel for a bit of inspiration of whats possible when you bring in another set of hands. As always Eric, an amazing video 😁
I Have been inspired by you so much so that i have quit my job, and have started my own office, struggling to find a lot of things to happen, but yeah i know it will happen soon.. I love your style of explaining and guiding as if i am just in front of you and you are literally talking to me... thank you for making these videos.
Amazing, i'm a french architecture student and your videos help me to get through project's problems. Talking about your routine and showing it to us is very helpful ! Thank you !
This video was amazing. I was studying economics, and I realized that I wasn't happy enough, so I started doubting myself. Now, I'm changing my career to architecture and I'm pretty sure is a rough path to follow, but I just watch your videos and I got inspired instantly that the only thing I want is to learn how to design an architectural plan. Great video!!
Hey.im 18 and im starting uni in September. Im trying to search up materials that could help me improve my sketching an have a more open mind. I wish you all the best from wherever you are💕. ☺
@Oddwolf799 lop Which is great if you want to be a mechanic. I had 2 when I was 17 also, a toyota corolla and a datsun B210. I never put either on the road but sold the Toyota for 2.5 times what I paid for it after the muffler rusted off and gave the other to my younger brother for $100. You had to leave the block heater plugged in during summer and push start it down the lane, max compression 75 psi and no idle.
yeesh. I just wrapped up my first year of architecture school and i’m pretty discouraged. I love architecture, and creating, and architecture as an art form. But man this year was so so rough. I didn’t even get to go on campus because of covid, and I just learned everything from my laptop in my room at home. I came here looking to see what the future could potentially hold, some outside motivation that could drive me to continue doing this. As of right now I am BEYOD discouraged and burnt out from the overwhelming amount of stress and expectations of my professors. I so enjoy the idea of this field and creating spaces for people... but I’m just not sure if I can handle mentally. On the bright side I have learned so much about time management and responsibilities, so I am happy I have that. However that doesn’t change the fact that I was just up for 36 hours straight trying to finish my final project, and then still not being satisfied with my work at the end. I feel like total shit. I’m going to take a week or so to calm down and decompress before making any decisions about the future. But if I do chooses to stay, I really hope it gets better. edit: (i’m not trying to discourage anyone from going into this field, i just needed to get that off my chest, and everyone’s experience is different! you won’t know how you feel until you try:))
That is really good mate . May I ask how you came to that conclusion ? Currently I want to figure out what I would like to do with my life but I don't know how to decide on what to do .
@@Dragon_prince90 You really have to think about something that you would enjoy doing for most of your life. Wether its helping people or designing clothes thats on what you find appealing. However your opinions and thoughts do change throughout the year so check up on what you want to do often
hello, greetings from Colombia, a few weeks ago I started to watch your videos, I'm a first-year architecture student and I see that you are a good reference for many of us who want to reach that professional level you have, I love your videos, good luck and here you have a follower from another country
I have not a single idea how i got to your channel but i subscribed!. I'm not an "architect" but I love your process. I'm wanting to build houses and I am going to build our first home on my property I bought. This is FANTASTIC of a resource. You sir just made my snacks and drinks watch list.
It isn't, but for some reason universities still want you to be good at math, so you'll need to do a lot of math in high school. Once you make it into the study you won't really use it. That's how it works at my university at least.
Awesome idea I love watching this type of videos and I enjoy architectural content as well, I wanted to be an architect when I was younger I really enjoyed designing houses and sketching just for fun but I thought that it will not make me enough money for living so I didn't continue and started programming later on I started logo design and now I am trying to get my work on Behance and all social media and I want to start working on clients work but I think it takes time. I still do enjoy your videos a lot keep up ;)
Hi Eric, I am a big fan. I have to thank you, in the past couple months I took off school to really decide what I wanted to study and commit to. Architecture was always a choice in the back of my head, and you have sallitafide my choice to pressure it wholeheartedly. So thank you for all the education you have provided on your channel.
The best thing about Eric's RUclips channel is the superb production quality. Very much enjoy these and so glad to see so much attention deservedly due. Cheers, SCR
Hey I'm a 2nd semester architecture student from Germany. I stumbled across this vid while looking for inspiration and motivation as the 3rd semester starts tomorrow and it really helped me regaining my focus!
I’m 14, I would like to got to medical school and become a consultant. I need to work my butt off, this would be my second choice of a job, that being, if I do well in school.
I love the rustic-contemporary look as in the image you showed with the child at the table. I am an engineer who came from a family where parents and grandparents built their own homes. I am planning to build an ADU in this style where windows would face south onto woods and a meadow. I appreciate your method of printing out a simple drawing and freehand sketching the exterior on tracing paper. I love the sample cart for materials too. Thank you for your video and showing a great example of work/life balance.
I'm an architecture student and I just finished my first year in university. I've found pretty interesting that the things that the teachers make us do in class are so similar to the "real" life of an architect. I have a long path yet, but I'm starting to love my career. Thank you for showing me that there's a lot of ways to get over a lack of creativity and mostly take time to yourself when you really need it. I would love to build my own house and have fun inside my creations like you do!
As stupid as it may sounds, I actually developed an interest in building from the Roblox game Bloxburg. Now I'm fully dedicated to studying architecture
Great video. I have an under grad and post grad in arch, decided to go into planning, and in the master of planning immediately switched to a specialisation in urban design, because i missed working with drawings. It was great seeing a vid of someone working through the design process through drawings and explaining how designers work with and through drawings to develop a design.
Nice video showing the many facets of being an architect beyond the creative process in order to be successful, how to manage time, and in the end produce a finished product so that you can go on to your next project. Thanks for sharing, and showing the nice view from the top of your mountain even though it was a snowy day.
I'm 17 now, your video inspired me to pursue this career. It's really hard and I lowkey regret ever seeing this video, yet at the same time I'm really happy with what I chose. I decided to continue off in college civil engineering instead, it has more math, bc I realised I'm not really built for designing, numbers are my niche. Wish you luck and happiness, thank you for this video ❤😊

I’m gonna be born in a week and I really wanna become an architect
Your channel is the reason I started sketching and using my hands again as opposed to strictly using the computer - so thank you for being an inspiring source!!
I really like how you balance your work with non-work related things for your creative process
How’s architecture going 🥰
Peace ✌️

Another great opportunity to sit beside a thoughtful professional and be exposed to another's elemental process. Thanks as always Eric.

appreciate that my friend...we're on similar tracks...cheers...!
Lol

Enjoy the journey and remember to work hard. Good luck!
Feel like there’s a lot of 15 year olds here . I am one of them and this has help me to choose what I want to study

Where does all the math come into play. I was always told it’s very math heavy.
It is not
You have to measure the length of the building that's the math and see if it makes sense
Theorx it’s actually not very math heavy. Just your basic algebra. Engineers on the other hand handle all the math problems.
It isn't, but for some reason universities still want you to be good at math, so you'll need to do a lot of math in high school. Once you make it into the study you won't really use it. That's how it works at my university at least.
Depends on the program. The school I am looking at requires college algebra, physics, calculus, and geometry.
I learned a lot of the design process in the first half of the video, and having the physical materials in front of you can make a difference
I still do enjoy your videos a lot keep up ;)
What did you decide to do instead? And do you regret not following your passion?

I love the rustic-contemporary look as in the image you showed with the child at the table. I am an engineer who came from a family where parents and grandparents built their own homes. I am planning to build an ADU in this style where windows would face south onto woods and a meadow. Thank you for showing me that there's a lot of ways to get over a lack of creativity and mostly take time to yourself when you really need it.
I have got a question for you sir.....that
Why do architects do an interior too?
Because there are some interior designers like me to do....
Then why?
Nice video showing the many facets of being an architect beyond the creative process in order to be successful, how to manage time, and in the end produce a finished product so that you can go on to your next project.
