A Day in the Life of an Architect | Architecture vlog

- Опубликовано: 14 мар 2018
- Follow a typical day in the life of an architect. Part architecture vlog, part behind-the-scenes look at some of the tasks architects work on each day: from designing a set of elevations to managing projects in construction, to writing specifications, to managing an office, and how to deal with the inevitable creative blocks creatives face on a daily basis.
I intentionally structure my day to be divided between making in the morning and managing in the afternoons, with a mid-day transition break for exercise. Learn why this works for me and follow along as I work through some of the most common struggles an architect faces in daily professional practice.
For aspiring architects, architecture students, and those curious about exactly what it is that architects do each day.
In future vlogs I hope to be able to show more of the construction coordination and dialogue that happens outside of the studio as this is where so many decisions are made.

Hi amazing vlog, thanks for sharing. I'm just wondering about your favorite pen is, cause the link is not working anymore, i'll apreciatte if you sharing the name for searching it. Thanks!
Link is fixed now thanks for letting me know...cheers...
Sad thing these days young architects jumping straight into digital realm, forgoing sketching. Trying to think out of the box while using the box to do thinking. I know that's old talk, but well... Keep at it! Hope this will aspire more budding architects.
30X40 Design Workshop what company do you work for? I am a high school student and I am wanting to look for companies I want to do my internship at. And is it in the us and what state is it in. Plz can you give me some advice for high school and college to be a successful student and a successful architect.
Am just 16 an I have dreams of becoming and architect can we chat
when you mention the cat before your own sons
the cat is more important lol
The only thing that I noticed in this vlog HAHAHAHA
Omg yoo I said the same thing!!🤣🤣
Vicalas dont judge
Coz priorities obviously
Me: is shitty at math and drawing.
Also me: **dreams to be an architect**
You don't NEED to be good at drawing. Most plans are done on the computer. Proficiency in artistic drawing is just an extra that can make you have higher marks in artistic classes at university, but there are very few of those. Regardless, it is always good to study artistic shadows etc for renders, as you will need to make them. Even if the computer does rendering for you, it still needs a human eye to correct/personalize details. But there is a difference with knowing how to draw and how to color. Because of time, you will mostly hand in digital drawings to your client too. For math difficulty you can ask what subjects will the course cover and fully learn them in your holidays/prior taking the course (to take the time you need to understand them).
Ps: you can always improve in any area you want if you put the time and effort into it!
M Vp totales right. There are a lot of students which are Bad at drawing.
Me too shitty at math and I am an architect student😂🤣
I'm good at drawing but not so good in maths 😂👌
Some unis accept you even if you don't have maths
I am a 15 year old student who is interested in the engineering and architecture field. Thanks you so much for producing this amazing video, giving me a look inside your job and letting me be able to see what you do, i appreciate it.
Eli M same also 15 only i cant choose between law and architecture
Im also 15 and in autumn im startnig my first touch with architecture im so excidet

That's me!!!!
Oh boy you're in for a wild ride
That was me as well , when people ask me “why do u want to do architecture?” Me: “It all started with sims 4” Them: *not sure whether to take me seriously or not*
Bernardo Parmigiani 5 I’ve chosen to do architecture in university (I start September), What would u say I have to prepare myself for ?

Yes that's what we need architecture vlogs, hopefully the arch community on youtube will grow from this
appreciate that my friend...thanks for watching...
Yh I loved it too.. there's another good channel on youtube called ( surviving architecture) .. check it out
You have right mate
yes totally agree! :) I am just starting my own series called "what architecture school does not teach you'. Its a collection of lessons, insights and stories from my own (architecture) life! Feel free to check it out, subscribe, like or comment! :)

i’m on my second year of architecture and this video was extremely motivational yet intimidating at the same time. even though i know i’m only 18 and i still have an extremely long path ahead of me, the fear of not being able to get to this level always haunts me. i have the feeling there’s so much i don’t know (in terms of structures, softwares, technical details, materials etc) and i’m always afraid i won’t learn it all “in time” or whatever. but this very same intimidation i feel is what keeps me going. i really want to become the best architect i could possibly be and your channel has been an amazing motivation. thank you so much for the content and hugs from Brazil.
Any field that requires skill feels that way im 21 and was very intimidated about plumbing and not knowing exactly what to do. The more you do new things and get familiar the more comfortable you get. Then you get so comfortable that its second nature
If you have the motivation to learn I’m sure you’ll do great. I wish you luck 🙌
its been 3 years now !! How much have you learned ??
I have been feeling the same lately and I keep thinking I wont make it but your comment made me realise that their are many people who go through the same thing, and now your comment is made me feel motivated and that I can make it through
Thank you
Btw it's been 4 years since this video was released and I hope your dream of becoming an architect is accomplished

I’m gonna be born in a week and I really wanna become an architect
This life seems sort of laid back even though i know it’ll get pretty stressful sometimes, but this seems like the life I imagined for myself. Thank you for being an inspiration to begin something in my life while young
Hi Eric, I’m italian and I’m in the first year of architecture. You convinced me to make this decision, this important decision. You are what i want to be in 10 or 15 years. Your life, your way of thinking are what inspire me. Good look for everything!

I’m a Koreans architect engineer and I wanna get into my english listening skill. Fortunately I found your youtube. Here is some great expectations for me.
I've just found out your channel and I'm absolutely amazed with each one of your videos! I'm a young architect, almost graduating in architecture school, here in Brazil, and your vlogs are refilling me with the passion to begin my journey. I'm now sleepless because of your videos, and I thank you so much for this!
This came at a perfect time when I’m in the process of designing our first home! It’s a rainy Sunday morning in Auckland, New Zealand perfect for watching vlogs, reading books. How you live should be a major contributor of your design as well as consideration for your site and views and movement. Keep doing what you do 👌🏽
I really like how you balance your work with non-work related things for your creative process
Your channel is the reason I started sketching and using my hands again as opposed to strictly using the computer - so thank you for being an inspiring source!!
love this, im studying Architecture right now and its just great to know that taking a mental break isn't you slacking off or being overwhelmed. Love the content
Ooh my God!! I'm running out of words. Erick, this is a top top notch Vlog from you. I really liked it. Content organization & quality, they all show how hardworking you are on making these videos and a future that is waiting for you. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. May God open doors for you and to all of us that are trying to imitate and learn from your content. Peace ✌️
Awesome video and very informative as always. It's always great to get insight into someone else creative process. A walk in the snow looks really fun.
I have to say that as an emerging interior designer I really appreciate your videos. They help me manage my time for doing my portfolio, and give me ideas on doing things differently. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
This video was amazing. I was studying economics, and I realized that I wasn't happy enough, so I started doubting myself. Now, I'm changing my career to architecture and I'm pretty sure is a rough path to follow, but I just watch your videos and I got inspired instantly that the only thing I want is to learn how to design an architectural plan. Great video!!
Eric, a great vlog (as usual)! This is an important aspect of being a 'one-man-show' working from a home office, having the discipline to manage your time. It's the one thing I struggle with the most so your comments are greatly appreciated. 'Time boxing' is the new word of the day!
I’m a current high school student thinking about a future job in this career. It was interesting learning what someone who has this job does and makes me even more interested in pursuing this career. Thanks for making this video and giving an insight on what a day would be like.
ive just started this kind of life, after workign a few years in a bunch of companies, i decided to work for myself, it's been tough, but it's worth it. thanks for shraing these moments with us, it's been both inspiring and overwhelming to feel there are some people out there, wanting and thinking the same things as i do...all the best...waiting for more videos
You're such an inspiration! Thanks for all of your work; it's priceless.
I'm on my first year of architecture school, your videos are just greatly inspiring and I enjoy watching them a lot, keep it up
Glad to see zero thumbs down on this one! Very nice story telling and I glad you remind us it's OK to break and change the pace of your day. Often this cannot be achieved working for someone else, but is still so crucial, especially during the creative process [or should I say, a partial block during the creative process]. I look forward to your vlog's, thanks for the dedication and hopefully to help demystify us Architect's to the world a little more with each video.
appreciate your support my friend...thanks...!
Man, I really love this way of showing architecture. Doing blogs make architecture look more familiar, it doesn't look like it's something made only by gods. Keep on working with these vlogs. I love it man!
Total admiration for architectures and I love the way you are at ease with your work, and the isolation you put your house close to nature... Great stuff.
Another great opportunity to sit beside a thoughtful professional and be exposed to another's elemental process. Thanks as always Eric.
thanks...really appreciate the encouraging words...!
13:10 - That's a good book! I have the same. Love your "architecture vlog"! Hope you'll do more. :)
The best thing about Eric's RUclips channel is the superb production quality. Very much enjoy these and so glad to see so much attention deservedly due. Cheers, SCR
I'm a Brazilian architect and I'm beyond happy to have found this channel! Hopefully the Architecture community will grow even more on RUclips. It's exciting and refreshing to see how fellow professionals around the world make our field more accessible to the public and how we can all share our unique experiences and knowledge in many different ways. Needless to say, I'm biased but architecture is indeed a captivating science. Thanks for sharing a bit of your daily life with us!
Hi I’m a 9th grader and my dream is to become a architect but I’m the worst at sketching or drawing and that makes think I’m not cut out to become a architect. Could you do a video where you tell us what it takes to become a architect or something?
Cantrelatesister if you want to specialize in classical architecture, it’s required to be good at drawing, but if you want to do modern architecture, drawing tringles, squares and rectangles will do the job.
Well also it is important to draw but in the course of studying architecture most of the time you ALSO get to develop the drawing skill, maybe from REALLY basic to moderate or moderate to excellent, it's all practice, you can also have the gift of already being good at it but also by practicing and really trying is great, if you don't really want to do it you might find it too boring or annoying, but don't get discouraged just because you're not a pro already! Also may I suggest civil engineer? If you like calculus and numbers it's kind of in the field of house/building making
Just take drawing classes. It’s easier than t looks once you understand the foundational concepts you’ll realize your dreams. I am also on your path, I haven’t gotten accepted into my dream school but hope to do so by improving my art skills. Goodluck! And pray to god we realize our dreams ♥️
Svendar i can tell you are not an architecture student or an architect, just by your answer. Specialize in classical architecture ? Do not give people bad advice if you dont know what you are talking. You take drawing lessons, that’s it. I started mine when i was in 11th grade. If you work really hard, 2 years its enough to learn the basics and get you into the school you want. You will then learn everything you need regarding designing a home in the next 6 years of school. Oh and, things like drawing and understanding perspective are critical if you want to be a good architect. Trust me, drawing rectangles and triangles will not “do the job”.
You dont need to draw like Da Vinci to become an architect. As long as you know how to draw perspectives and scale of objects, youll be fine. Also, theres computer softwares such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds max, rhino etc. To help you with modeling and drawing.
I've learned so much in such a short amount of time! Keep going nice to watch! And your sketches an your final plans look perfect!!
This was really really helpful!!! I love the fact that you sketch to bring your ideas to the fore front. In school I had a hard time balancing sketching versus the digital mediums. So the way you merge them is eye opening for me!!! Thank you!!!
Right now I'm in high school and dreaming of becoming an architect. I have such respect for you and what you do. Being an entrepreneur, architect and doing youtube all at ones must take a lot of hard work, discipline and put pressure. That is just something I admire and really strive towards, being able to work hard for what I want and having that will. Thanx for the much inspiring and informative videos!!
I was waiting anxiously for this one, this is pure gold. Awesome video!! (I think I'm not the only one who's gonna say "we want more of this")
appreciate the feedback my friend...so nice to hear...cheers...

I like your Vlogs, full of the simple details in the life of an architect. I also like your hobby of going out into the snow
Excellent stuff, thx. In the old days, before the digital life, I would often put my phone in the fridge and put on the headphones before starting the design process. Cheers, Adam.
awesome...what a great image i have of that now...
hahaha nice!
It' s good to see a fellow designer express the common sentiments shared by a lot of architects.
Hi Eric, I am a big fan. I have to thank you, in the past couple months I took off school to really decide what I wanted to study and commit to. Architecture was always a choice in the back of my head, and you have sallitafide my choice to pressure it wholeheartedly. So thank you for all the education you have provided on your channel.
Thank you. Great video. Loved the shots outside and the sketches
i am only fourteen and i always draw houses and buildings after i use cardboard to make
a structure of it and i love doing it
all the time and i want to become an architect
I used to do it with paper when I was kid. It was not a stable structure lol.

It’s my first time ever looking at one of your videos and I’m super exited to still watching you, because I will start this September Architecture at the university and I wasn’t 100% sure if it was the right decision, but now with a real video of someone talking about their life has helped me, a lot. So thanks you.

Your life mirrors my own except you are a much better and more thorough architect. I work from my home that I designed in 2003 and built over a period of a couple of years. Moved in in 2006. I work mainly on residential projects in a rural area. I like to get out to. mostly on the bike. Great vid. I especially relate to the hassle and distraction of emails, texts, etc. We need solitude and quite to create and that can also isolate us. You are definitely not alone. Another great video that has inspired me greatly. 👍
appreciate that my friend...we're on similar tracks...cheers...!
Patrick Daly I’ve taken to checking emails once an hour and replying once a day. Two monitors lends itself to having email open all day - doesn’t work for me anymore

Thank you so much for this video. This is what i've been searching - a day of an architect with some sketches and thinking. It's intresting to see how other people do it.
Awesome idea I love watching this type of videos and I enjoy architectural content as well, I wanted to be an architect when I was younger I really enjoyed designing houses and sketching just for fun but I thought that it will not make me enough money for living so I didn't continue and started programming later on I started logo design and now I am trying to get my work on Behance and all social media and I want to start working on clients work but I think it takes time. I still do enjoy your videos a lot keep up ;)
What did you decide to do instead? And do you regret not following your passion?
Love this video. I've been at an impasse over the last 2 years. Struggling to decide if I should pursue an architecture career for myself. I know on a deep down level that it would be a great fit for me and I believe I have all of the personality traits and the work ethic necessary to be good at it, but I've had so many people discourage me from it. I've also done some research and found that it can be a very hard field to break in to. And I've heard first hand stories of people regretting going to school for it. But my heart is still telling me to give it a try. The logical side of my brain thinks it's most likely a huge risk. Anyway, sorry to be that weird anonymous person that spills there guts on the internet to strangers, but just wanted to thank you for making these videos, they're great insight and might help me along in the process of deciding what to do.
Geez life choices. Lol

Love IT! I'm new to the channel, but I'm a self-employed industrial designer, so it was great to see how someone else manages there work life! Great video. Best, Jon
Amazing, i'm a french architecture student and your videos help me to get through project's problems. Talking about your routine and showing it to us is very helpful ! Thank you !
This video was calming but also stressful for a 15 year old wanting to take on engineering or architecture. I am good at maths and drawing but I feel I’d struggle for time management. How do you find time to do little tasks you set yourself without becoming distracted or not doing anything? I love the life he lives and I strive to become as advanced as he is and have as much motivation as him. Thank you for this inspirational video! 🙌
Best advice I have is to not compare yourself to a professional with 26 years in practice. I have many years of school (5 yrs) + training (5 years of internship) and then passing licensing exams and years studying under others until I opened the practice you see in the video. This only comes from investing the time to learn, practice, and fail; repeatedly. Don't let the challenge of it deter you, instead let the possibility of it inspire you to action. Good luck!
Feel like there’s a lot of 15 year olds here . I am one of them and this has help me to choose what I want to study
That is really good mate . May I ask how you came to that conclusion ? Currently I want to figure out what I would like to do with my life but I don't know how to decide on what to do .
@@Dragon_prince90 You really have to think about something that you would enjoy doing for most of your life. Wether its helping people or designing clothes thats on what you find appealing. However your opinions and thoughts do change throughout the year so check up on what you want to do often

@Oddwolf799 lop Which is great if you want to be a mechanic. I had 2 when I was 17 also, a toyota corolla and a datsun B210. I never put either on the road but sold the Toyota for 2.5 times what I paid for it after the muffler rusted off and gave the other to my younger brother for $100. You had to leave the block heater plugged in during summer and push start it down the lane, max compression 75 psi and no idle.
Enjoy the journey and remember to work hard. Good luck!

Where does all the math come into play. I was always told it’s very math heavy.
It is not
You have to measure the length of the building that's the math and see if it makes sense
Theorx it’s actually not very math heavy. Just your basic algebra. Engineers on the other hand handle all the math problems.
It isn't, but for some reason universities still want you to be good at math, so you'll need to do a lot of math in high school. Once you make it into the study you won't really use it. That's how it works at my university at least.
Depends on the program. The school I am looking at requires college algebra, physics, calculus, and geometry.
It's the best video you ever made.
wow...very kind of you to say...!
Awesome video Eric!! It's really cool to see the whole day process that goes into a one-man operation.
Eric, Great video as always. An inspiration to a up and coming architectural student. Your videos are the only arch vids I watch due to the nature of your work and the way you come across. Excellent! One video I would like to watch is the way you store your files. NAS, Hard drive etc and what storage solutions you are using etc. Take care.

Eric. Thanks for creating such engaging content in our profession. You are not alone ! Watching these videoed is inspiring and I feel like I am right in the Studio. Keep it up.
I've been Designing for 34 years and I'm still learning, so ! With Architecture you don't go to Varsity, Graduate and you know everything, when you graduate you will find out that you actually know nothing, it comes with experience and TIME. It's ART, and you are forever evolving, learning new programs, new techniques, new styles, you have to be a people's person, you deal with the deepest being of total strangers. You get quite intimate with your clients, because you are designing their living space, where they are going to live, sleep, eat, etc. I am 90% of the time friend with my clients after designing their homes, you create a bond during designing their dreams. BUT ! it's not all glamorous, there's lots and lots of paper work involved, red tape, laws , bylaws to deal with, which does not always go the way you want it to go. Frustration, when you've spent hours and days, to design specific details, and the contractor will mess it up in half an hour flat, or the client will decide the feature is too expensive and omits it.
