    I love the unplugged version of Angry Chair, one of my personal favourites from that show, so haunting.

    Not the best example is it.. one is an acoustic version which is obviously going to be sang totally differently with less aggression

      That's what I was going to say. The first performance is full concert, trying to blow / everybody's face off with intensity. The second one was so chill everyone had their lava lamps and cigarettes and vibes as a family.

    When you sing live full electric, you have to project a loud voice. Playing unplugged you have to have much more control of your tone and voice level. Also, mistakes show up easily, screaming over heavy guitars basically covers up little mistakes. You don't hear addiction changing his voice, you hear Layne changing his voice. On purpose...

    • @tylurmackinnon6217
      @tylurmackinnon6217 2 года назад +2

      Nope. You hear Layne wavering over the notes due to weakness in every dimension. Not just power due to acoustic setting but control and expression. Sad deterioration.

      @@tylurmackinnon6217 sure, his voice in Born Again/ Died was awful, but he was still able to perform well... A very unique talent, a very sad story

      i think its actually simply cuz on unplugged, they're sitting, more focused and more relaxed compared to a regular show thats filled with adrenaline. its not necesarily what you wrote.

    Not that Layne wasn't probably high during the 1992 video, but with the Unplugged show, he was deep in the heroin addiction, so much so that he knew his liver was damaged, but he hadn't isolated himself completely yet. If you listen to Jerry Cantrell talk about Layne, all he saw when he looked over at Layne during the Unplugged show was that his best friend was dying and there was nothing he could do. Layne was such a ghost of himself during the Unplugged show. The whole show is heartbreaking to watch.

      @aly9402 3 года назад +2

      yeah I don't know about all that. watch "Down in a Hole" during that MTV Unplugged show, Jerry looks at Layne, then over at Mike and is smiling because the show was going great.

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt 3 года назад +8

      @@aly9402 Jerry smirked at Mike and Sean during Down in a Hole and Rooster because Layne hit the high notes in those songs. Before the show, Sean and Mike argued with Jerry about whether Layne could do the high notes in some of the songs they had chosen for the set. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who had confidence that Layne could pull it off. When he did, during Down In a Hole and Rooster, Jerry smirked at Sean and Mike in a "Told you so" way.
      I know my Layne history and the backstory of the Unplugged show. Layne was just high enough during the show to chase away withdrawal symptoms and so he didn't get dopesick.

      @@tamibrandt I see. Well, that just makes my heart ache even more. And I know people with addictions are looked down upon, probably even more so in the 90s. Not very cool of Jerry or the band if thats the case, but I'll always love them.

      What are you talking about, his liver? Heroin does not cause direct damage to the liver and layne died of an overdose so I doubt there was anything wrong with his liver. Alcohol and hepatitis could cause liver damage but heroin alone, no. That interview with him talking about his liver not functioning by that argentinean journalist is proven to have never actually happened. He never said any of that stuff. It was all made up.

    Sounds pretty on point in both if ya ask me. I'm sure it's pretty hard to do anything when heavily addicted to heroin so it's kind of impressive.

    Sad.... Check out the State Theatre Detroit show from 9/29/93 if you haven't already. Great quality video . Sound is just ok. Saw this same show a few days earlier in Chicago.

      health wise, not really performance wise. Both sound great, the point is that you can tell he was in much worse condition with his drug addiction

    i dont see anything wrong, the only effects of heroin use you really see is his weight in 1996. his voice sounds fantastic and controlled at unplugged

    Don’t see any downfall in his singing performance here….his physical appearance perhaps… but not his voice….the unplugged was gold….is singing on Another Brick in the Wall however….the difference in his voice can be heard clearly…sadly

    The band was better and tighter by 96 and unplugged while Layne was worse and deteriorating by 96 and unplugged. In 92, Layne was at his peak and incredible while the band was a bit shambolic and not as tight as they could be. Too bad, the unplugged could of been even better. Layne wasted his talent!
