Kinetic sculptor and artist Theo Jansen builds 'strandbeests' from yellow plastic tubing that is readily available in his native Holland.
The graceful creatures evolve over time as Theo adapts their designs to harness the wind more efficiently. They are powered only by the wind and even store some of the wind's energy in plastic bottle 'stomachs' to be used when there is no wind.

Gosh, I'm reading all these comments here and I don't see a one that just purely celebrates Theo's creativity, playful love of life, and mastery of PHYSICS!!!! Can't ya's all just step back an inch and just purely enjoy his beautiful work without tearing everything to shreds!!?? There is such beauty out there in the world, and beautiful people who love and revel in it. We need to embrace and enjoy every aspect of life and every little thing it gives us. So, lighten up, folks, and enjoy!!!

The wonder of art!! Every creation of of the human spirit is filled with life, wether a painting, the written word, music, or science. All come from the human spirit desiring to express itself in the world. Theo Jansen is doing nothing more than expressing the heart of his spirit -- and for that I applaud him. what a great gift he has given to all who wonder at creation. Rube Goldburg would be proud! I am in awe of his magic, his art and his creativity.

I saw it on NGC pretty cool stuff;-)

Although it seems easy, this smooth movement is awesome. Technically speaking this kinematic chain moves without any strike control; It is fascinating. I admire his effort for making an under-actuated robot which is inspired by the nature. look at the natural dynamics which move act, react & interact softly and smoothly. Soft harmony is what separate conventional mechanics from the creatures of nature. This guy is on the right way for manifesting nature power by breathing the spirit of it.
