  • Like many geysers in Yellowstone National Park, Castle Geyser has both “minor” and “major” eruptions. A major eruptions consists of a 15 to 20 minute water phase which transitions into a 30 to 40 minute steam phase. A minor eruption will start the same as major but the eruption activity will suddenly stop, sometimes just minutes into the eruption, leaving too much water in its system to transition into a noisy steam phase. Just after this video’s 3-minute mark you will see the geyser suddenly pause then start again - if you listen carefully you can hear me joke to with one of the other geyser gazers, “You almost said it!” as they raised their radio to inform the Visitors Center and other gazers in the basin that the eruption had stopped and was a “minor.” As noted, Castle continued, and at around the video's 16-minute mark begins to transition into its steam phase. More information on Castle can be found at these links: en.wikipedia.o... and geysertimes.or...

I've heard Castle Geyser in particular is known for having steam phase eruptions. Was it extremely loud? I've heard the steam phase can produce almost a roar when powerful enough.
