A Steamy Oblong Geyser Eruption -- September 2021
In his book "Geysers of Yellowstone, Fifth Edition," T. Scott Bryan writes, "Oblong Geyser is not a major geyser in terms of the sheer size of its eruptions, but because of its tremendous water discharge it has always been high on the list of important geysers. The actual amount discharged has never been accurately determined because it spreads out in all directions across a broad sinter platform and almost immediately cascades into Firehole River, but it probably amounts to at least 10,000 gallons. . . . The water is never really jetted into the air, but instead is domed upward by massive boiling that can reach 25 feet high. The entire play lasts between 5 and 7 minutes. About 2 hours ar...

Old Faithful and Beehive Dual Eruption viewed from the Castle to Sawmill Bridge
Просмотров 69Год назад
We had just finish watching an eruption of Grand when a geyser gazer up on Geyser Hill announced over the radio, "Beehive's Indicator, IE." IE stands for "in eruption," meaning that the Beehive's Indicator was already erupting when the gazer noticed it. I called back and asked if he had an estimate on how long Indicator had been going, and he said he thought it had been doing so for about five ...
Plume Geyser -- YNP

Plume Geyser is located 50 meters east of Beehive Geyser in the 'Geyser Hill Group," of Yellowstone National Park's Upper Geyser Basin. At the time this video was published (February 2023), Plume has been dormant for over ten years its last known eruption was recorded on the evening of Saturday, January 26, 2013. Plume's location is near a corner of the the boardwalk that provides a great view ...
Cinnamon Spouter & Cinnamon West - Black Sand Basin YNP - October 14, 2018
Просмотров 42Год назад
From "The Geysers of Yellowstone," by T. Scott Bryan: '“Cinnamon Spouter” was first noted as a “sizzling fracture” in 1933. Nothing more was seen of it until 1988, when it began to spray from a small opening. By April 1989, it had developed a pool that acted as a geyser/ spouter directly underneath the boardwalk. . . The spring gradually developed an ever-larger crater stained with a cinnamon-r...
Steamboat Geyser Eruption, October 1, 2019

My phone's battery was running low, so I went back to my car to charge it. There I met up with my son, Daniel Jr, and grandson, Ian. We had just started back when Steamboat erupted at 12:52 AM and continued in water phase for an incredible 49-minutes entering steam phase at 1:42 PM. This long water phase duration allowed us to get video from the Steerage (The Bridge), and also from various loca...

Upper Bells Waterfall Blasting Through the Trees - June 23, 2019

Upper Bells Waterfall is almost always impressive during peak runoff, but with this year's exceptional snowpack still occupying the Wasatch high-country, this is the most powerful I've ever seen it. The waterfall is a 3 mile hike from the Granite Trailhead, with a 2,220' elevation gain, making this a strenuous hike at time. To get there, continue following the Bells Canyon trail from the Lower ...
Beehive Geyser Showers Onlookers - October 1, 2018

One of the most common questions I get asked about Geyser Gazing in Yellowstone National Park is “What happens if you get caught in the shower of water coming off of a geyser eruption?” The answer is: In many cases you would be terribly scalded, which is just one of the reasons it is illegal to leave boardwalks and officially marked trails in hydrothermal areas. However, there are several place...
"Waves on Grand" -- Precursor to a Grand Eruption

If you are in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin waiting for Grand Geyser to erupt, and hear a nearby geyser gazer announce “Waves on Grand,” get your camera ready - chances are the eruption you’ve been waiting for is just moments away. The eruption of Grand actually involves three geysers; viewed from the boardwalk they are Vent (left), Turban (center), and Grand (right). Like several geysers in...

Saturday, October 7, 2017 was clear, cool, and very breezy as cold front moved into the area; the following morning would see nearly the entire Park blanketed with fresh dusting of snow. The previous daytime eruptions had started earlier than forecasted - Beehive’s median interval time this year is around 16h...
Castle Geyser "Major" - October 5, 2017
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.6 лет назад
Like many geysers in Yellowstone National Park, Castle Geyser has both “minor” and “major” eruptions. A major eruptions consists of a 15 to 20 minute water phase which transitions into a 30 to 40 minute steam phase. A minor eruption will start the same as major but the eruption activity will suddenly stop, sometimes just minutes into the eruption, leaving too much water in its system to transit...

We where there after 8:00 PM. Plume hasn't erupted in 10 years now, so it probably will not cooperate this season: geysertimes.org/geyser.php?id=Plume. On the other hand, the location I filmed this at is a great place to watch Old Faithful from because you can also keep an eye on Beehive, which IMO one of the best geysers in the world: ruclips.net/video/y8gLhHzPY5M/видео.html. Thanks for your comment. If you happen to go to the Park again, here are a few things you can do in improve your chances of seeing Beehive and the others that are sometimes hard to catch. #1: Go to the Geysertimes.org database and look for Beehive's current eruption trends. Here the link: geysertimes.org/geyser.php?id=Beehive #2: Carry a two-way radio tuned to channel 4.5 or 4.05. This is the both the Visitor Center's channel and the GOSA (Geyser Observation Study Association) channel. It's used by the "geyser gazers" who monitor the Upper Geyser Basin activity and populate the database linked above. If you hear one of the following over the radio, you have approximately 15-minutes to either get to Geyser Hill or at least within viewing distance of Beehive: "Water in Indicator's vent" (with occurs about 1 to 2-minutes before indictor's eruption), and "Eruption of Indicator" (which gives gazers about 15-minutes (but no promise) advance notice of Beehive's eruption). During this year's Fall visit to Yellowstone, I was able to catch 5 of the 7 eruptions of Beehive that occurred from September 25 through October 1, 2022. Here's just one of them: ruclips.net/user/shortsxwfhA1YYSKQ Dan

How long is it from the indicator going off until the geyser eruption

    • @danielwilliams1752
      @danielwilliams1752 2 года назад

Generally it's about 15-minutes from the start of Indicator to the start of Beehive, but can be less, and occasionally Beehive goes off without Indicator erupting. If you go to the GeyserTimes database, you can track the history of Indicator and Beehive start times: geysertimes.org/.

Glad you enjoyed. This was a fairly rare event. In his book, "The Geysers of Yellowstone, Fifth Edition," T. Scott Bryan states, "Opal Pool is a significant geyser, but its eruptions are rare and exceedingly brief. No activity was known until 1947, when Opal played several times to as high as 50 feet. Similar action occurred in 1949 and 1954, but then nothing further was seen until 1979. Many seasons go by without eruptions being observed. The most recent activity occurred as a series on the single day of September 23, 2014. Most modern eruptions are less than 30 feet high, though some estimated at 70 to 80 feet were reported years ago. No matter what the size, the play is often only a single, virtually instantaneous burst of water. Sometimes successive bursts a few seconds apart stretch the total duration to 1 minute. During the minutes to hours before an eruption, strong convection is visible over the vent, but this can also happen without resulting in an eruption."

I plan to do this run at the beginning of March. How hard is it to follow the path? I notice you passed several splits and they look to be marked, but with small signs. I don't want to end up on a harder trail - I could probably get through an easy blue but don't want to risk anything more serious.

The tails at Park City are fairly well marked, but to make sure know exactly where your going, pick up a trail map -- available at various location around the resort -- before heading up the hill. You can also use the following trail map link: assets.vailresorts.com/-/media/park-city/products/brochure/the-mountain/about-the-mountain/trail-map/1819_pc_trailmapart_sitecore.ashx?la=en. Homerun is on the left side of the map -- look for the upper Pioneer or Bonanza lift stations and follow the trail from there.

From the resort’s base, take the Payday lift, followed by the Bonanza lift the the top of the mountain. This is where most people access the Homerun trail. If you want to do the full length as shown in the video, start skiing down Homerun from the Bonanza lift station and turn right down the Mid-Mountain run; this will take you to the Pioneer lift station. Take the Pioneer lift back to the top of the mountain and to the beginning of the Homerun trail. Check out the trail map in Park City’s web site and this should all make sense. Have fun and be safe.
