Mr. Ernest Smatt died in Florida in 2021 while undergoing treatment. Born in Portland, Jamaica and a pioneer in tourism in Ocho Rios from the mid sixties he owned several tourism related properties in Jamaica and Cayman Islands.

That Hotel I remember quite well when I lived in Jamaica. At the time is was operated by an Enlishman known as: Hugh Maitland Walker. He was also the Managing Director of company called Tourwise Limited, a tour company which did ground handling and, transportation. I had the privilege of working for him. Sadly, he had passed away after my emigration from Jamaica on the 27th of October 2006 and, he was buried at a church in Sumerset England. He had two children I remember also with his wife Monika Maitland Walker. Pity the Hotel ended up like that. Thanks for the update Nick.
I knew a lot of it's former staff, because my father worked there before l was born but he retired when l was about fifteen. I also did an internship there in year 2000, so this hotels held a lot memory for family. I remember going to the Christmas party with my parents when l was a kid.
This was a popular hotel when I was growing up. A friend worked there. I thought it was still operating. A nice place to spend time and relax. It needs much investment to bring it back to its glory state.
So sad to hear. That was where we had our honeymoon 2007! We returned a few years later and noticed the downturn. For an all-inclusive hotel, we had a very small food choice. We were taken to a riverside property that they also owned, nearby in Ocho Rios. I have fond memories of the staff especially the elderly lady who cleaned our room, Ms Hazel. I will have to go look at the pictures again, with my husband 😢

Remember delivering delayed Tourist bags in that area in the 70s, was a good proud time of My beautiful Jamaica. I stayed a weekend at the Runaway bay hotel prize won from the Bauxite family day picnic it was in the 70s.
ABNB bad management cost to income ratio, not to mention pilfering both internal/external labor salary...in other words it's not easy to own or manage any business that'sy the CRIMINAL behaviors have to be curtailed .

I am seeing from alot of people in the comments that it's because it's too near to the sea. I didn't know that would be a problem. But I realize due to the condition of the front patio why everyone is saying that.❤

What a shame what a fantastic spot it’s in if only sum one called do it up I am sure people would be going out there again especially with tourism going up in Jamaica we have been 8 times now from the U.K. we stay at the riu negril we have been twice this year the last time was when hurricane beryl hit in second week we were there we have a lot of friends there now Jamaica is now are second home
It is a shame to see one of the top hotels from the 50s and 60s come to such a stage. Was a very classy small hotel. Stayed there back in the days. I knew it was Shaw Park once you hit thw beach. Could hardly believe. That hotel started to go down since Ernest Smatt had it. stayed there in the last stages. could hardly get whiskey. just rum and coke.

An investor will restore it. It will probably become a boutique all inclusive hotel where most Jamaicans abroad like to stay. There is none in Ochie only the big All inclusive ones. This has lots of potential.

If that is the Shaw Park Hotel i use to take n pick up tourist there for Greenlight Tours in the late 70 ties Mr Walker was the owner at that time
My Uncles friend owned that hotel, I stayed there on two occasions as a teenager I’m now 58 yrs old but I have good memories of staying there

Nick the grounds seems like it's being maintained because the bushes aren't overgrown on the walkways. Just an observation.
I was saying to myself that it seems as if someone is tending to it in some ways because the plants are green 👍🇯🇲
Security is on compound so I assume also that there is steps put in place for maintaining it while abandoned.

Its too near to the sea that is why they abandon it. The owners already knows about it. Its not worth renovating.

I stayed at that hotel in 2006 and it was very nice. The owner was also staying there at the time. I didn’t realise it was no longer in operation. I am very surprised to hear that it’s been abandoned!
I worked there in there in the late eighties. Before I migrated. It was a beautiful place. It was a vibe . Sorry it’s being abandoned like that.
