Buying a 1st Gen Toyota Tundra Pt 1 - Putting her on the Road

- After looking for a while, I came across this 2005 Tundra with a solid frame and engine, despite having 160 000 miles on it. It needed some work to make it roadworthy, including bell cranks, rear brake cylinder, rear left axle seal, and two front lower ball joints. In order to save on repairs, I sourced all of the parts and attempted to do all the work myself. I succeeded in this except for the rear axle seal and bearing. This job requires a pretty sturdy shop press. Unfortunately, I only had access to a 4 ton, which could not get the job done. With winter fast approaching, I caved and brought the axle to a local shop to have the bearing and outer seal pressed on.
In this video, I also cleaned the throttle body. The truck was throwing a running lean and multiple misfire code, bank 1. It turned out to be the upstream O2 sensor and the truck has been running well ever since. Unfortunately, my limited filming equipment (my phone) died in the colder weather while installing the front lower ball joints.
Since the repairs, this truck has been an awesome change from the Matrix and Brz. I'm hoping she will help me complete some future projects at the house and maybe haul some toys in the summer. This being said, there are some small things on it that I would like to fix in upcoming videos, including the stereo and speakers, passenger door lock actuator, cracked side mirrors, and others.

You really know how to fix a truck. I was amazed that you have all the tools you need to get the job done. I am far far far from your league but the video was educational. My2006 Tundra DC TRD has 250k plus miles. I am the original owner. It's a great truck. I hope you enjoy your Tundra for years to come.
Love this video. No blabbing about the shop and whatnot, just getting on to the business of fixing it and getting on the road. Well done.
Lol! Thanks. I definitely needed to get it done before winter hit.
Yea me too! Mostly silence with muffled f bomb and whistling. I do wish I knew what the fck hes working on though hahah! Im kinda joking pretty sure he's replacing e brake and drum brakes.
I agree, good job.
The only thing wrong with this video is the salt destroying our vehicles. Great job dude👍🏼👍🏼
I appreciate the lack of unnecessary yapping in your videos.
Love this truck. Just recently got a second 2006 Tundra Double Cab after my first one was totaled by a wrong way driver.
Sorry to hear that- hope you found a good one!
Interesting. I just bought a 2006 4x2. Usefull vid! Tkx
Amazing you can work in silence like that. I usually cuss up a storm with seized nuts and bolts haha. Good stuff
Haha! I edit all of that out ;)
Great truck and nice work!
Something I’ve been putting off for a while on my 2006 thanks for the tips great video
Duuude these are awesome. Please make another
Man, I wish I was that patient. Nicely done video.
My son just purchased a 2006 Tundra and we are going to be doing many of the same tasks. Thx and Great video.
That’s awesome good luck! The next video will be front and rear shocks. Hopefully up in a few weeks. Been tough to get the time recently but it’s coming.
Great job on the video, really enjoyable to watch. These are some of the best trucks on the road and you've got a good one for sure. Really good work on the maintenance and repair. Timing belt and water pump for sure, but also the FL ball joints. Sneaky buggers were loosening up on my 2000 at 200,000 ish. But for real you've got it figured out and are doing great work.
Much appreciated. I actually changed both FL ball joints but wasn’t able to film it. Trying to film everything from now on.
Love these clean simple videos. I'm looking at getting into my first toyota soon, just waiting on a deal to come up on a first gen tundra or 1st/2nd gen tacoma. Here in Sask the tacoma tax is worse than the cummins tax so whatever i get is going to need work. Good luck on the project!
I was originally looking at a taco too, but it was insane what folks were asking for a rotted-out old girl with lots of miles. Let me know how it goes, I love hearing about new builds.
@@mcmillaproject4976 It was same situation in the northeast and I've decided to give up tacoma and get a tundra.
good job
Thanks for the video. I’m more encouraged to invest in a 1st gen Tundra. Great vid.👍
Well done!
Sweet score.
Dude that’s an amazing job you did awesome
NICE ,GOOD JOB !!!!
Very satisfying
more videos please!!
There are some in the making!
Great job.
I’m having a hard time with my 05, still not out of love with it though. Strange spot for a starter! Looks like Hamilton. I’m in Niagara.
just picked up an 05" with about 160,000 on it as well
super impressive what you were able to do, props
Great truck! Enjoy it 👌
Great video, I have two first-gen Tundra's ....living on the West Coast we enjoy no salt so they will run forever. One last point, I have a 2019 Tacoma and I would drive my Tundras over it any day over the Taco.
I'm jealous of the salt-free roads out west. I was thinking of some kind of rust proofing for the Tundra. Perhaps Por 15 or something more simple like Fluid Film black. I'll have to do some research first.
Man I’m happy I live in AZ. We don’t have rust like that at all. We don’t even think about it down here
I definitely get jealous when I watch videos from warmer climates. You can keep cars longer down there.
Timing belt/water pump 💪🏻
Good idea!
Good video. Do u know what is causing your cel? Mine had the dreaded smog pump go out.
It was actually a bank 1 upstream O2 sensor. It was causing the engine to idle up and down. It scared me a little bit, but I checked the code and did some trouble shooting. Replaced it and it’s been fine ever since.
Best vehicle you will ever own do not sell it
omg so rusted! We dont see rust like this in California!
Caused by chemicals sprayed on the road in parts of the country that snow.
Where did you get those side window deflectors?
That's a good question. They were on the truck when I bought it. I have a feeling it was a dealer option back in good old 2005.
What brand gear oil did you put in the rear diff?
I think it was motomaster or something. 75w 90
Look at that Canadian rust.
Why check engine light on?
It was a O2 sensor that I have since replaced.
