I didn’t comment on the raffle idea before because you said you were only looking for affirmative comments on the Tally-Ho idea. My thought then and now was/is a raffled instrument doesn’t need to be Tally-Ho themed. Your talents obviously stand on their own, and anyone watching would be happy to win one of your creations in a raffle. Honestly, I was a little puzzled by the proposed Tally-Ho theme, as to my mind that works only if the instrument winds up on the boat. So, 👍 on the raffle idea, and my humble opinion is it’s for the better that it would not be Tally-Ho themed. Cheers
The only reason he was considering a Tally Ho themed build is because so many people wondered why the first one was not, he was trying to give the em what they wanted!
My assumption when watching the original video is the same as @donanders2110. He stated there was a large number of comments on the build videos of people asking for a Tally-Ho themed instrument. But the instrument was not Tally-Ho themed per Leo's request. So this new Tally-Ho themed build would have functioned to satisfy the viewers request.
I will do it in the future. I want to make sure I do it right. Apparently raffles can fall under gambling and RUclips can shut your channel down for participation. so...I'll figure it out. Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it.
Hey, I notice you have a full set of fine adjusters on both these violins - any particular reason? Also, have you given any thought to the new geared pegs coming on the market?
Yes I have fine adjusters for each string! Very observant! I put them on leos for the same reason I do it on mine here in Kentucky. The humidity changes so much here and in Washington that it is just easier to have as you are playing. Often time old time jam sessions go from evening into the night and it is nice to be able to tweak a string. Good eye.
Of course Leo must approve, I'd assumed he already had. I must admit to being disappointed though, it would have been a unique instrument and a joy to watch its creation.
Yeah It would have been great. I didnt see the complications coming and although I was trying to help and make fun project, it would not have turned out that way. So I regret getting to excited and asking to see if it was a viable project before hearing back from Leo but I am very glad I didnt assume it was ok and start making it!
Oh i would love that!! what kind of banjo.... traditional or gourd? or what? Also I have to figure out the raffle thing since apparently RUclips can shut down channels for gambling when they do raffles on the channel... (one of the reasons we are not doing the tally ho raffle)
I’m always curious about ballpark estimates of the cost or value of things. Of course violins can be bought for as little as $50 all the way up to millions of $. If you don’t mind sharing, what range of prices do you sell your instruments for?
Sure. As of now custom violins range from 3,600 and up. Depending on wood selection, inlay, carving etc. Banjos start at 3,000 and go up from there. Mountain banjos, gourd banjos, and the odd ball instruments all are different than those numbers. Just depends on the project.
I appreciate that! thanks. Yeah. Lots of reasons I didnt consider, like how raffles can be seen as gambling and youtube can shut down your channel for participating... which would be the worst for tally ho!
Hi, I was wondering what strings you thought would do well in the marine environment, not just because of the salt in the air potentially damaging them but also maintaining stable tuning (as much as you can with new strings) due to humidity and temperature changes?
There are two sets that I would use. Nothing will be damage proof from the environment I imagine but these last longer on the hand and over time than others I have used. I am one of those people that try and get the most life out of any strings I can. I would recommend Vision Strings or Helicore Strings. They are lower cost and last well. I would not put crazy costing strings on there.
@@heatherwilliamson-morton1260 I put the helicore on there I think. But i did change out for a gold E string for a warmer tone. It is not necessary but was a recommendation from a player that tested it out.
That's too bad it seemed like a nice idea, I am still excited to see what you do next, so far have really enjoyed your videos and am planning on sticking around!
Hi the viloin is beautiful - I wondered if you thought of puting the map (or a different map say a world map silk screen) on the outside of the back so that it was visible?
No I used the wood from the the restoration work. The original wood is not suitable for its roll in instrument making. I offered that to Leo and he wanted it more traditional which I tried to honor. I was ready to use all the old stuff or new stuff.
Shame as I have been unable, for various reasons, to contribute financially to Leo and the project before now, although I have been following him visually and spiritually since the very beginning.
I've been a fan and follower of the Tally Ho project for a few years now. I guess he has his reasons and is entitled to have them, but I've got to say that I'm a bit dissappointed in Mr. Goolden at this very moment. I wonder if that's why the videos from the fine folks trying to fix his broken capstan seem to have stopped. There are a couple of other wooden boat projects I've been following for a few years now as well. You might want to reach out to the Acorn to Arabella or the Rediviva crews. I'm sure either of them would be thrilled to have a boat themed hand crafted instrument that you've created.
I dont envy leos spot. The raffle or fundraiser can be charged as gambling from state to state and RUclips has removed some channels for running lotteries or raffles. So he wants no risk in that. Also apparently a lot of people try and cash in on the tally ho name so to keep that from happening they only allow fundraising and such to come from them directly. I have thought about reaching out to others at some point possibly but I also dont want to diminish the gift to tally ho. So we will see.
Some months ago I read, probably on Reddit, that RUclips deleted a music channel for 'raffling off' a high value computer and software which is against RUclips policy. You can do giveaways but not a lottery. Don't remember all the details but folks need to think a bit before blaming Leo. There may be legal implications that could affect Leo's business, US status and YT channel. Just sayin'.
I didnt see the complications coming and although I was trying to help and make fun project, it would not have turned out that way. So I regret getting to excited and asking to see if it was a viable project before hearing back from Leo but I am very glad I didnt assume it was ok and start making it! He was excited and liked the idea it just was too risky and complicated with the raffle since it can be construed as gambling and channels can get shut down for it. As well as a branding issue which I totally get.
A raffle is a 'game of chance' that's subject to state gambling laws. Leo is prob'ly spending a bit already for a visa lawyer & a business accountant - & doesn't need the add'l complications, even though the proposal was well-meant.
One good one right below here. Also people try and cash in on the tally ho name. And while i was trying to do it for good he can't support all the projects people try and do under the name so to control it he tries to keep the only tally ho stuff coming from them. Which I respect. I can only imagine now after thinking about it how many people could make anything and claim it was from tally ho and make a quick buck.
Thanks. I didnt see the complications coming and although I was trying to help and make fun project, it would not have turned out that way. So I regret getting to excited and asking to see if it was a viable project before hearing back from Leo but I am very glad I didnt assume it was ok and start making it!
I think i still could do a pochette, I would love to. I definitely dont want to call it tally ho out of respect and I never want anyone to think i am trying to cash in on their work. The raffle apparently is also a way youtube channels have been shut down in the past since it can be considered gambling. If someone wants to order one I would love to make one! But I can't afford to spend a couple months making it otherwise as of now. If I was a full time RUclipsr maybe but that is not how I make a living.
I could make a pocket violin but nothing with the tally ho name or association. I do not want to come across as using their name for profit. But I am always up for making a custom instrument! It could be a generic boat shaped one just for fun. That is traditional to make.
How much would it take to commission the boat style? Maybe an aviation feel? I have access to wood for it as well if that would make it more interesting.
Same here. But they were good reasons. Raffles can sometimes get charged as gambling and youtube can shut down channels for it. That is one of many reasons that I didnt see coming. Thanks for following along!
Yep I did. I didnt see the complications coming and although I was trying to help and make fun project, it would not have turned out that way. So I regret getting to excited and asking to see if it was a viable project before hearing back from Leo but I am very glad I didnt assume it was ok and start making it!
You could still build the boat shape with a parrot head, I thought that would be cool, just don't put the name Tally Ho on it. Seems Leo didn't want a Tally Ho violin and he doesn't want anyone else to have one. Too bad....everyone is always worried about liabilities and lawyers, maybe it's a trade mark issue and Leo doesn't want someone making money off his project.
It's both they dont want to have their name out of their control which I totally understand! But also youtube channels have been shut down for raffles depending on state laws and such, it can be seen as gambling. That is not a risk anyone wants to take especially the tally ho channel. I still might make a boat inspired one just not tally ho.
You gave the impression previously that Leo approved of your project and that you were both in communication. Your posting here seems to be admission of something contrary.
I did reach out to leo and ask before the last video. I made the mistake of getting a poll from everyone before hearing a response. I made an assumption that he would be cool with it, not thinking through the reasons why it would not be a good idea. I assumed wrong. As soon as I heard back from him I took down the other video to make sure the idea didnt get anymore support. I should have waited for a response before making the idea public that was my mistake. I didnt think the raffle could be seen as gambling from state to state and have consequences from youtube as well as some other reasons he gave. Thanks for your comment
rather disappointed with Leo, but the idea was really beautiful and carry on with making beautiful instruments. A fiddle with a parrot head would be fun no matter what and Leo hasn't got the corner on market for tall ships and parrots. Make one anyway for the sake of fun and honor another ship elsewhere. there are other tall ships and sailboats. Am sure somebody else in Port Townsend or elsewhere would be quite happy to give you wood. Sorry just not impressed by Leo.
I still may do the idea of a ship themed one. My dad was in the navy his whole life so it would be close to home to do a historic naval vessel. But Leo had good reasons. Lots of reasons I didn't consider, like how raffles can be seen as gambling and youtube can shut down your channel for participating... which would be the worst for tally ho. But also apparently lots of people try and cash in on the name tally ho so he they keep all fundraising coming from them, which I respect.
@@JDanielGraham a few reason I can understand by not the rejection of idea... He could offer to take over the raffle/ bidding himself if he was that distrustful of situation.. and normally something like that would only be announced via RUclips but more likely held elsewhere in reality. Doesn't matter. If you have a mental picture of the thing, you should carry on and do it. Leo doesn't need the support so much and he's not declared nonprofit, so it's like he's well funded but not quite above board. He's grayzone...
The advantage leo has taken overall, with every aspect of the project, makes me cringe more frequently as time goes on... I'm guessing, for starters it's to do with upstaging people ...?
For starters, Leo is a British subject living in the USA under a visa & running a private business here. His visa now gets reviewed yearly, & 1 sure way (of many) to lose it is by being less than squeaky-clean w/ his tax records. Charity auctions or raffles are regulated by laws that vary from state to state, and I'll venture that they can't be used to benefit a private business.
I don't understand. Leo taking what advantage? Tally ho project is a business as well as an entertainment for the viewers. Leo is employing a number of highly skilled craftsmen and using the best materials available to him. It is not a hobby and costs plenty. You seem rather down on the project.
I love this, no drama, no click-bait, just kindness and humility. Looking forward to the upcoming projects. Cheers.
I appreciate that. Thats the goal. Just make stuff and hopefully you all can enjoy.

I have access to wood for it as well if that would make it more interesting.
my email is dgraham1@georgetowncollege.edu shoot me a message and we can hash out all of the details!

A wee-bit disappointed, but I am sure Leo had good reasons. I will keep following your next builds, whatever you may chose. 😊
Same here. But they were good reasons. Raffles can sometimes get charged as gambling and youtube can shut down channels for it. That is one of many reasons that I didnt see coming. Thanks for following along!
Bummer!
No harm / No fowl
💖💖💖🇦🇺
Fair enough. I think you might have jumped the gun a little. Still a nice fiddle
Yep I did. I didnt see the complications coming and although I was trying to help and make fun project, it would not have turned out that way. So I regret getting to excited and asking to see if it was a viable project before hearing back from Leo but I am very glad I didnt assume it was ok and start making it!
The bad thing about hyde glue is if a dog gets a hold of it. The dog will totally destroy your work.
I know you're probably joking, but hide glue is really the only suitable glue for instruments.
I'm not joking. That dog won't leave you enough to repair.
Oh I can only imagine! its like liquid raw hide!
You have completed the Tally Ho fiddle and it's now time to move on; a new project, a new theme, and hopefully, new subscribers.
Sounds like a plan to me! Thanks for following along
I think i will make it one day but not tally ho related. But naval and ship related for sure. @@ardeladimwit
@@JDanielGraham it's good to hear. the description was intriguing.
Also wondering who he might be upstaging? He always gives his crew a lot of on screen time and they seem to be having a lot of fun.
