Portable Kit Side Project: Part Two
For the last couple of years when I go to my sons gymnastics practice or when I am going to a music festival I bring along my little tote with all of my tools. The tote has seen better days and lots of wear. I have had the thought of making a portable little kit to carry my tools and small projects. I found this little box, that I am assuming was for slide carousels...maybe, but now it's going to be my portable little tool chest. I still have to get back to the Piano cabinet and back to a few instrument builds that will be done by January when I will be working on the Sitka Viola! But my ADHD said this was pressing... and even if that is false...I listened.

I have had requests over the years to do a long form tour of my studio space. So here is something to fit that bill. Even after filming this things have changed. It is always a work in progress. So sit back and enjoy some story telling.

Hi Daniel.. I am from United Kingdom. I want to buy a bottle gourd banjo.. Would YOU let know the price plz and I prefer 4 strings. Thanks.
We can chat price for sure! Go ahead and send me an email daniel_graham(at)georgetowncollege.edu and we can get a conversation started on your project! -Daniel
I. Am making my first banjo using the rim block method. Can’t get the trapezoid shape right. Would love to know the dimentions of that first block
That depends on how big the rim is. The best way I have found is to draw two lines like a cross hair that are at 90 degree to each other. Then draw a circle the size of your rim (inside and out). Then divide the circle into how many parts you are going to have in the rim layer. (in my case 8). then you can see how wide and long the pieces need to be to fit each curved slice in. Does that make sense. It will be different for each size pot you are making. For a 12inch pot my pieces are 5.125 long at the top and 4inch across the bottom with as 22.5 degree angle on the pieces. If yours is smaller or bigger those numbers for top and bottom of the piece would change. Does that help? Hope so. if not let me know and we can maybe chat through video and I can show you.
Outstanding. I have a case exactly like this one and was wanting to restore it. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it. Loads of ways of restoring these. Hope your project goes well.
* Grinning old man here. Ingenuity, craftsmanship, looks and playsbility. Elon- jo Woody, watch out ladies.
Can you type out a list of tools I need to make violens ?
I would have loved to see your technique for cutting the half blind dove tails.
I can do a demo video on that...
I've been using strips of fabric and fiberglass resin from the inside for separations. Just getting back into it at the age of 72. 😊
wow! Super cool!
Very beautiful work. Do you have any videos on how you made the small flip handles?
No but I can make a little one for you if you want. It is simple but time consuming. I cut out the opening in the walnut then trimmed them to shape. Then made the cherry pieces to fit. Then drilled a hole and put a nail through the cherry a walnut. Then mortised them into the apple wood.
@JDanielGraham If you have the time, that would be very helpful. Thank you.
That grain on the drawer fronts reminds me of Hokusai's wave. Beautiful job!
Thanks! That is a cool observation.
Amazing work, I loved seeing your gallery at the theater in Frankfort!
So glad you got to see some of the instruments. Thanks for coming!
Thanks Daniel, a very creative way to use this box . What was it originally used for ?
I honestly dont know for sure. I found it at a flea market for a few dollars. I think it was for carrying slide carousels.. that is my best guess.
I’ve subscribed its so nice to see someone thinking outside of the box 😊
Haha Thanks!
great!
That came out beautiful Daniel. The drawer front grain is incredible!
yeah I love the look of those pieces. I had not seen many like that. It's all stable with not many soft spots.
Love your attention to detail, and great to re purpose something that wasn’t being used for its original manufacture. My workshop is full of things that one day I’ll find another use for! Great channel always educates in some way or another.
I appreciate that! Thanks
So satisfying how they fit in that box
thanks man! I am typing this with one glove as I put a coat of poly on them right now haha.
Terrific work on those draws Daniel! 👍👍
Thanks! I'm super excited about how it's turning out.
. This is amazing
Im so glad you enjoyed it!
So many mixed feelings! Sacrificing a perfectly (well maybe potentially) good piano to make a cabinmate, I'm not so sure. But ... I always like to see your work.
I had them as well, but it was already in pieces on the curb when I got my hands on it. They dragged it across the sidewalk on its side... They side it didn't work anymore. I did find some broken hammers inside when taking it apart. But I honestly think after getting it all apart that they could have fixed it if they wanted to...maybe it was a budget or space issue for a small Montessori school..I don't know. I am just glad not to see it go in a landfill.
@@JDanielGraham Yes! Better an artful cabinet than a landfill.
Im making a woodtop 3 string instrument with hand tools. Im looking to make an octagonal body as you have here. Im curious, How did you cut the angles for rhe octogon and what angle did you cut the pieces at?
I actually teach a whole on demand video course on making this instrument! jdgraham.net/product/fretless-octagon-kentucky-banjo-build/ But to set the angles its 360 divided by how many sides then divided that by two.
Use a push stick. No more banjo playing if there’s an accident. Or get a Sawstop.
It is a saw stop. I was trained with comfort levels that are not for everyone haha. I am careful, i know my hands and eyes are my lively hood.
This looks a really interesting project - looking forward to the rest of the series
We will see how long till I get it done. Chipping away here and there. Thanks for watching.
Well done & very interesting project Daniel! 👍👍🎹🎹
I live near Philadelphia and remember Cunningham Piano often advertising on the radio in the 70's. I'd forgotten about them.
very cool! It was such a well made object!
Thanks a cool idea and useful way to recycle.
"For all my time and money no profit did I see That old copper kettle was the death of me"
Really great studio tour. You showed but didn’t mention the ultralight boats in a photo of your desk and chair. Having built a few as well as traditional wooden boats I’m curious on their story. Cheers
They were part of a large installation. Here is the background and some images from it. jdgraham.net/2016/03/the-lake-of-melchizedek/ And a video about its process. jdgraham.net/2016/03/ket-muse-moments/
I've missed seeing your videos. Hoping for another project. Love your stories and thanks for sharing.
Thanks I appreciate it! I have some interesting ones coming up. School has started so time has been sparse for filming
Fascinating insight into a craftsman.
Thanks for showing us around Dan! Very interesting studio and surroundings! 👍👍🪕🪕
I enjoyed seeing all your tools. I graduated from University of New Mexico in 1972 with a BFA in Photography and ended up doing carpentry work, wood millwork, and composite boat building. I retired in 2021 and have started purchasing vintage tools. Thanks for the tour I really enjoy your channel.
Im so glad you enjoy it! Man sounds like you have done a lot across art and craft, that's great!
Thanks for different Daniel.
Thanks Daniel I drove through Georgetown a couple days ago beautiful flowers and landscaping , old buildings nice little city. thanks for the tour.
oh cool! Yeah it's a fun town. If you come through again you are welcome to drop in.
Mesmerizing
Glad you liked it!
Ciao , sarebbe possibile avere i disegni con le misure ,per la costruzione del banjo?
The drawings and all measurements come with the course.
Im looking at grabbing this course, would this design be easy enough to modify with a round body instead of the octogon?
Yes you can do it. It would take splitting the sides down to 16 sides then rounding them. This course is by hand with no power tools and only basic handtools. I also have one on an Appalachian mountain banjo that is round. ruclips.net/video/C3yrW9lP2YE/видео.html
if you have any other questions dont hesitate to give a shout!
8:57 Hello where to download such a template or how to make one?
I make them myself. I drew it out in illustrator then cut it out with a laser cuter. I could sell you a set if you would like
What kind of strings did you use?
These are aquilla 5B strings. They also have the 7B strings for minstrel setups but they dont go up to full pitch.
Beautiful instrument
Thanks so much!
Me perking up when someone said Louisville and said it correctly! Howdy neighbor! Thank you for your channel, it’s been an inspiration as I get started on my own lutherie journey!
oh thats so funny and true. I can't stand hearing it in airports! Hey if you ever want to come through Georgetown and talk shop it would be great to hang out! Just let me know
@@JDanielGraham That would be great! I’ll keep that in mind, when I can find the time! I would love to hear about the wood top banjos (I think!) I see the background of your vids sometimes, if you’re looking for another video idea. 😁
I love small string instruments. And to the people that don’t like the music…I’m sorry to say that the music you most likely listen to is highly produced and pitch corrected and auto tuned. I suggest venturing out into the real world. Go to a bar and watch some live music, you just might have a good time.
I get that. I listen to a lot of old time music and I got to a number of music festivals and I go to old time jams and play with others. I like the wrong notes as much as the right ones.
Man these plans are free in the third fox fire book..
No purple heart? Shame
purple heart is not really the best in a fiddle. I would have used it in the fingerboard (that or some the original teak) but Leo wanted it more traditional which I respected. I was fully ready to make it full of all sorts of woods!
@@JDanielGraham really enjoyed your build. Beautiful work!
@@OldishGoalie I appreciate that. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch!
WOW!! I am plumb speachless, that kettle Banjo is a beauty and not just perty it sounds Great!! Top notch work my friend top notch. You sell them? do y'all have a link to any for sale?
I do sell them and make custom ones for anyone who wants one! I dont really have them on my website right now. But have a handful available. Are you looking for something?
Howdy there @@JDanielGraham , ya one similar to that one ya got there, what would the price be for somethin like that?
@@JohnnyCornbread Each one is different based on the complexity of the carving or details or wood selection etc. This one would be in $3,250. It is available but I also have another silver tea kettle if you wanted to change it up to fit a budget. Just let me know!
I have minimal tools so this is perfect and I kind of like the idea of making the banjo more similarly to the mountain folk. Can you add the fretted option later or in the beginning of this process like the mountain banjo? Thanks course looks great!
It is such a fun banjo! I still play this one often. If you want frets you would need a few extra tools and materials but I could send you the specific fret demo videos if you end up getting the class. You would need a fret saw, Fret snips, a triangular file or fret file, and some fret wire.
I think you really did right by Kelly, whoever they are, or whoever they may have been.
Thanks for that!
An old card catalog is the holy grail of antique finds!
Agreed!!
The carving is over the top. I love it!
Thanks so much!
The wood has already naturally aged on the Tally Ho; so of course is sounded beautiful--like very much the character of the sound--it will be at home on the high seas. Now Leo needs to entrol in violin lessons.
I think that is in the works!
