The dark color of the buckeye timber is called spalting. That’s caused by fungi.

Yes the lines are spalting. It is a piece of buckeye burl. Which in this case was almost on the root system so no shock about the spalting. I love working with spalted woods, the trick is to get it to stop before the later stages of rot set it. I have some that are beautiful pieces of wood but too far gone for anything structural haha.

Thank you for that I always wondered what stopped it from getting crushed in the center

Maybe I missed it but was the definition of the ribs given? A distinction between a rib and a bout may be useful.

Darn! I should have mentioned that. The rib is the material used to bend into the shapes of the bouts. So the "C bout ribs are made of Crab Apple" and the "Upper and Lower bouts ribs are Yellow Cedar" hopefully that makes sense.

You forgot the peg box. And the bridge is (supposed to be) angled to 90 degrees. The one that you have gives me a heart attack. It might snap when played vigorously with a bow, or a slight pizzicato. 😲

Very pretty violin. Why didn’t he wanna say viola? 😂
