In case of India, export of IT services at USD 200 Bn itself is sufficient to compensate for the entire energy import bill of around USD 175 Bn

I have just written a paper for my MBA, that discusses the role of neoliberal policies and trade agreements like NAFTA, in the destruction of Amercian communities and manufacturing jobs. Unfettered globalization and liberalization have only benefitted mega-corporations and the ultra rich. People all over the world are realizing the importance of protecting their industries, manufacturing things locally, and building resilient value chains.

More protectionism is not the answer. The problem is with our attitude towards protectionism, once we are protected, we don't feel the need to innovate or compete on an international level, the result is low productivity in agriculture, in industry, in services and everything else. Attitude and priorities need to change.

We should raise our standards to the competition of the world rather than favoring protectionism and devaluing the quality of materials. If we are incompetent, so we should go for competency instead of justifying the fault lines.

Good idea, but for tourism we have to improve peaceful environment, and take up the level of security to what the world standard is, we have promoted hatred, biased attitudes and intolerance in our society for personal gain, also have remained client state in war on terror and Afghan Jihad. All this have played havoc.

    2 questions
    1) will protectionism not further tank our export because we will not get preferencial treatment.?
    2) protectionism will create cartelization and elite will squeeze more juice out of poor.
    3) why not take advantage of "comparative advantage" to build efficient economy

Salam sir, i have been a frequent viewer of your channel. Though, your lecture about protectionism in the context of Pakistan is insightful as it suggests that protectionist policies have made growth possible in the economy in contrast to free trade, yet I think you've missed out PROVERTY RATES, UNEMPLOYMENT PERCENTAGE, and LITERACY RATIO in the country. It would be better for the sake of complete analysis to include above-mentioned data so as to compare that how globalization and subsequent economic integration had impacted country's broader socio-economic aspects.

Drastically Improve and perfect pro-labor laws and environmental laws. Allow the foreign manufacturers to set up assembly bases in Pakistan, where they hire Pakistani labor and Pakistani labor alone. Set up high wages. The case being- the workers who produce something ought to be able to consume that thing, as well.
Protectionism doesn’t help, as such. Labor and the working class ought to benefit. The government should legislate upon policies to effect drastic improvements for working class- better safety and working conditions, better worker pays, education. Protectionism or no protectionism is secondary.
If the worker has deeper pockets on account of being able to receive his just dues, his purchasing power shall increase. Plus, have the company abide by local or municipal rules of the locales where they establish ie pay local taxes for revenue generation. General prosperity shall take effect.
Large foreign corporations ought to be confronted by stringent labor protections, stricter environmental policy. They themselves would then become dissuaded to invest much, and as if by an invisible hand, local manufacturers shall be saved without needing to employ tariff based protectionist policies. Medium and small sized foreign manufacturers and service providers ought to be encouraged more in order to expand and enlarge market choices atop the local offerings. In that way, a sea of small and medium businesses shall be maintained.
A protectionist policy shall give rise to more market consolidation, oligopoly, and income inequality.

    • @luciddoggo5094

Just ur first sentence is wrong, u cant set up environmental laws and also intice foreign manufacturers, you have to get the foreign manufacturers first without worrying about that. China was dumping gallons of pure poison into industries while they were the fastest growing economy, but now that they are rich they can finally start worrying about environmental effects.
