The musical imo is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be, it’s a fun little movie. I think the main reason so many people hated it is because they were expecting the same level of culture impact as the og, something that is just not possible
Yeah I agree, I definitely hyped it in my head. I love musicals and I love Mean Girls so I thought I was going to love it but for me it was a bit too “classical cut to music in the middle of a thought to explain thought or feeling” in way I think was supposed to ironic and funny but just came off dated, out of touch, and cringey and then the story and style outside of the music also wasn’t very interesting, so it just wasn’t as good as it could have been considering its origins. Like even now, I don’t know anyone talking about this movie in pop culture whereas we still quote and copy the style from the original…
@@thedoctordisco4110I had no clue there was a Heathers musical. Wow, and it predates the Mean Girls musical. And somehow in my heyday of video rental I missed "Jawbreaker." So, that's on the list. You should watch Matilda the Musical because it's actually a great adaptation of the stage show. It's not based on the movie though. The musical is based on the book and has been running in the west end for over 10 years
Truly the best teen movie ever made. Most iconic "chick-flick" ever made. Lindsay Lohan is impeccable and truly becomes a plastic and eases into that role seamlessly.
The original is just too iconic. It’s one of those movies I can watch a million times and not lose my mind. I haven’t seen all of the musical, so I won’t offer an opinion on that out of fairness. (I just couldn’t get into it.) BUT, I don’t fault anybody that does love it. It’s nice that the legend can live on! (As long as everybody gives props to the OG 😝)
I've only seen the stage musical and not the movie musical, but the og movie is often really clever and subtle in how it's writing and the meaning is delivered. Like the mathlete scene, that internal dialogue she has to herself that leads to a correct answer is done really well in also honing the core message of what she learned from the whole ordeal. Whereas the stage musical version maybe by it's nature of being a musical, the scene is done with zero subtlely and she's singing at high energy the whole time ultimately belting 'the limit does not exist!' which I dunno, it's less like she herself is coming to that conclusion, it's like the musical is trying to beat you over the head with what you're supposed to take away from the show.
Dang that calculus teacher sounds.....interesting 😂😂. Best I had was an English teacher who had a photo of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy taped to her desk 😂 and cat pictures around her room...which gave unfortunate Professor Umbridge vibes but she was the sweetest loveliest lady so. Also as someone who lives in Britain who finds the difference in our high school general day to day to be absolutely wild...the idea that you could be in maths and the teacher puts on a movie so you go "okay well can I leave and go to the art room then?" is wild to me 😂😂
This movie is so iconic literally a work of art for the times. I rewatched it with friends awhile ago cause it was awhile since I’ve seen the movie and I was like omg this movie 💀.
I LOVE Mean Girls (2024) as a fan of the OG and the Broadway musical, not to mention the cast of the movie! Reneé and Auli’i are it up and everyone else did pretty great too. It’s fun for what it is as its own thing. Not a perfect movie but a campy musical.
Well, hello, darling! 💞 So glad you're tacking this movie. One of my favorite takes is that Janis was explaining her Lebanese background to Regina when they were younger, and she misunderstood and thought she liked girls.
This movie is iconic. Jess, if you haven't watched the 'Princess Dairies' films, I highly recommend them. They star Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews and they are movies you'd love.
I recommend also listening to the Broadway musical songs as well after you watch the movie, bc it’s really good but they cut some good songs from the movie.
I have two things. 1.) The musical (stage version) is incredible. The movie version (of the musical) has some great moments, but it's severely lacking because the girl playing Cady just didn't have the vocal chops to handle it. 2.) When you said "You could use that as a monologue" after Gretchen's breakdown Caesar speech, I died, because I work at a theatre and literally watched somebody use that monologue at a giant professional theatre casting call 💀
Tbh my biggest issue with the movie musical is the drastic music production changes from the stage version. If you're not familiar with the stage show, I think you'll enjoy the movie musical! especially since you don't have a strong nostalgic connection to the original film
FYI: This movie and FREAKY FRIDAY (2003) not only had Lindsay Lohan in the lead, but the same director too! Speaking of which, that movie needs a video (Jamie Lee Curtis is ICONIC in that).
what I will say about the musical go in with an open mind and have fun watching it. don’t take it too seriously I do love the musical for different reasons but most importantly that it’s fun!
One Movie I wish more reactors would cover is "Always" (1989) directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and Audrey Hepburn in her last film appearance before her passing in 1993.
I watched the original Mean Girls(2004) film on RUclips when it was free about two hours before I went to the movie theater to watch the new Mean Girls(2024) when it first came out. I also just watched Mean Girls(2024) again in theaters about 4 hours ago as of writing this comment 😂. I enjoyed both films. The original Mean Girls is a great film and of course I technically like it better but I enjoyed the latest one because it was just a modern new take on the original and the Broadway musical and I had fun with it.
The musical movie is just a fun little movie. i think people just had really high expectations for it without even watching or listening to the actual musical on broadway
Love this movie!! Personally I adored the new Mean Girls movie/musical as well. I was definitely the target audience (Loved the movie and the musical, love Renée Rapp, am generally very queer, and love a silly camp movie that I don't have to take too seriously). I also had a lot of fun analyzing the tiny line changes between the two movies. It's very fun to watch them back to back, because you notice all these little things that show the cultural shift between the 2000s and 2020s so well! It was also SO fun to see with my partner. But I'm definitely in the minority. I truly believe if you accept it as a good time and don't take it too seriously, you'll really enjoy it!
Have you ever thought of occasionally playing/reacting to some story video games for the first time on your channel, or creating a video game channel? I think some good ones would be - Halo Combat Evolved (2001) - Metal Gear Solid (1998) - Lego Marvel Superheroes (2012) (this one doesnt really have a deep story, but its super charming and has early mcu + non mcu characters meeting up) - The Walking Dead TellTale Season 1 (2012) also if its your first time playing these types of games there is no shame in picking lower difficulty settings!
The musical is fun. It’s it’s not gonna have the same impact as the original because it was such a cultural phenomenon, but the musical is still a good fun time.
I love that you say 'see ya' at the end of every video, and I'm Hungarian, and we say 'szia' which sounds the same and all the time I'm like huh so cool you speak Hungarian😂😂
Watching Mean Girls to watch the musical is actually so real. Don’t know why people even hate the musical film. I feel like every musical fan should LOVE it, and as a theater kid, it’s probably one of my favorite film adaptations of a musical. It did so good preserving the camp of the stage.
Personally, I actually really like the remake. It built upon the original while avoiding the admittedly problematic parts of the original. Then again, I grew up on the original. For a long time, it used to be my go-to Sick Day movie. Also, I'm a sucker for a good musical.
Oooof i've been there my spanish 3 teacher put on spanish language babe everyday. And because he did it with different periods, it was always the exact same part.

The 2024 musical is watchable and like I mean especially if you don't have nostalgia attached you will probably enjoy it. I grew up with this version so it will always be iconic to me and I will always enjoy it and usually watch it every October 3rd or thereabouts. The newer one does better if that is your opinion of such things about diversity but to others may not make as much sense why they broke up the cast the way they did. So I can see while trying to be respectful of course, and assuming people are not just hating for memes or ragebait why someone would see one being superior to the other or not. All in all, 2024 as a musical and a movie is perfectly enjoyable and watchable. There's just a lot of changes
The actual Broadway musical is fantastic, and is without a doubt the superior version. Unfortunately, it can only be viewed by bootleg. The new movie is a heavily edited and cut up version of the Broadway musical. They cut an hour out of it and removed half the songs. It's better than a lot of what critics say; I think the "surprise it's a musical" aspect of it really turned people off before it even had a chance. They didn't advertise it as a musical literally at all, and people were sitting in the theater shocked. You know there's nothing people who hate musicals like more than being tricked into seeing a musical.

that is so true. it is also surprising the amount of people who went in not realizing it was a musical which added to the negative reactions
I just think it was unnecessary. That might be another reason why people hate it. That's the reason I just plain won't watch it.
