Hi Gray. Thanks for the comment. Glad you're enjoying the channel.make sure you subscribe and turn notifications on. There's lots of content for new owners.
Will definitely have to add an emergency pull cord to the tool kit. This surely can be a great asset concerning such unforseen incident. The safety measures that you have explained are quite explicit in regards of avoiding surious injuries. Again, thanks for the video.
Another nice upload Dave ! Also another good point is to mentions its unsafe to run that sled without the clutch guard in place. I seen my buddy too late when he was reving his mach 1 with his head over that clutch and the clutch blew and broken pieces went everywhere. I told him he's lucky to be alive !
Hi Joe, I did not include that information in this video deliberately as I didn't want conflicting information. As per the operators manual, the belt guard should not be re-installed on this machine when it's running. I suspect the rationale is unsecured metal belt guard meeting turning drive pulley makes a more significant missile than belt fragments. Thanks for the comment, I have made reference in the video description.
I love these vids! I love that MXZ670HO my buddy had one with a 136 skid and 1 1/2 lugged track. I love how it hooked up it was definitely hard to beat down the trails and powder.
I had to do this on my 97 vmax 700 triple. I would have died if it started up on the first try like that haha. That sled was hard to start even with the original pull cord. I eventually got it and this is such an important thing to know!
You can also use a leather belt or tow rope around the primary, counter clockwise. Same idea, rap it and overlap the start, pull it fast so that it clears the primary when it starts.
Great skill to remember and practice before it happens to you. One note of caution. If just your pull start cord broke, you are probably ok to emergency start and ride. But......if the recoil starter came apart. You now have all the parts spinning inside your recoil asm and next to your magneto. Effectively now a blender of plastic and metal parts. Drive home directly. Pull the recoil and magneto asm locate and remove all of the parts that came apart, pawl, washer, keeper etc. Before riding again. Continue to ride will destroy your magneto asm. Ask me how I know.
Awesome vid I like how you get straight to the point is there maintenance on the track like does it stretch and how often do you replace your clutch belt
Not much in terms of maintenance on a track. Clean it with a brush and soap and water, keep it off the ground when you're not riding...belt is very much dependent on how much you ride and how you ride ... I'll put a couple of videos together on this.
Nice video showing helmet on with clutch guard off starting the sled. I drag race open mod sleds, and I can tell you for a FACT what can happen when a clutch blows parts off a mod sled!!
I have a Anderson open mod Drag Sled with a 617 Rotax mod motor in it. It threw out the cam arms just past my head, without a helmet I would have been blind or killed most likely for a fact, !!! Parts were found like 100 yards away when it blew just past my head, I heard the whistle of parts go past my head!!! Never again I hope !!
And if you are really down on your luck and you don't have nothing... Well you got your feet ! Get on the motor of the sled facing the back of the snowmobile and kick the primary clutch over from behind with all your might with your right foot ! Holding the handlebars ! It may take a few times but it will start !
Grand Touring was but not the RMK... It's a pull start... I do have the electric start option though... But that's $800 to buy battery, electric motor, and the starter gear...
Luckily I've only snapped a pull cord in the garage and not 100km away from home. Haha! Anyway, thanks Dave I always bring along an extra cord just in case something like this happens
If anyone does not have the little clip what you do is wrap the tag end over the rope when it goes back over, have a very small amount hanging out, for it to work you have to snug it up very tight. DO NOT TIE A KNOT AROUND THE PRIMARY. In my toolkit I keep a rubberized handle screwdriver and will wrap the rope around it, I won’t even tie a knot in the handle just because I’m terrified of it pulling in, doing this makes sure it will just be the rope that gets sucked it if it does. It might work with the spark plug puller but I think it might just be too slippery.
Depending on your sled your recoil might also be loose on the magneto side, make sure to check that it is not loose or going to get stuck on anything. If it does fall off do not run the sled for very long, just enough to get you to a safe place to get home, I’d be very worried about snow getting in the engine through the new hole from the recoil falling off. Stick a plastic bag over it once the engine has cooled down while you wait for the part to prevent water getting in or rust forming.
Hi Lonely. Thanks for the tips. Always be careful of doing anything that could result in the rope getting caught on anything. I bought a new toolkit for my sled so i would have everything approved for the sled.
Do you think the engine would spin the other way arround if you pull it the wrong way?this could be an easy and free way to get reverse on a sled that doesn't have it.
As your piston comes up toward top dead centre, the spark plug fires, meaning the combustion will occur just as it passed tdc an drive the piston down. With Electronic reverse, the timing is advanced so far that the combustion pushes the piston back down instead of going past top dead centre. Think of this like riding a bike and suddenly pushing the pedal down after you reach the bottom instead of in the front. It isn't the direction you pull it over, its when the spark fires that turns the crankshaft.
I had to do this with my formula z my recoil broke and now I gotta wait for my recoil to be rebuilt so I'm just using a rope and the handle off my recoil
Hey! Would you be able to make an updated video for those of us that don't have that little clip? A buddy of mine told me that doing it with your foot as in kicking it is a lot better to learn incase you lose the clip! Thanks
I would NEVER recommend an approach that requires you sticking your foot (& leg and pant leg) in next to a spinning clutch. Think that through and imagine the various things that can go wrong. Let me noodle some other approaches and see what I can come up with.
I'm not saying you couldn't do it in a pinch, but it doesn't seem safe to me. I wouldn't want to demonstrate it and have someone hurt themselves. You could do it with a tow strap, possibly a belt. I'm going to try a few things so keep watching the channel
No worries! Honestly a video I'd like to see is how to build a proper tool kit and what you should have in there! My sled didn't come with one and all I have is a clutch tool and a spark plug tool! Thanks!
Hi Just. As I mentioned, the process is slightly different on other model sleds. Some of them have a strap that goes around the primary etc. The starter and clip in this video is specific to the TRA drive pulley type. Basically anything that you can do to spin the primary safely will work. Thanks for the comment!
Just saw the notification and since my comment 2 plus years ago alot of ppl don't know they can start their skidoo using the method shown in your video even tho it's in the manual. That's good tho to let ppl know there's another way if the coil breaks.
I guess you could get one from a Grand Touring. You’d need battery, primary gear, starter, handle bar switch... might be easier to buy a sled with e start.
Hi Ether. Yeah I was thinking you could probably manage this without the starter in the kit. The 'cats use a strap, but the shape of the clutch is different. I'm going to try it..
I just think, in a real emergency situation like I had put myself into and that was because I was riding alone and will never do again, had made me scared to the point of using a last resort, A thick tow rope that barely fitted around the clutch, but with my fight or flight Adrenaline I got the machine started! message to ALL riders, Don't EVER ride alone!
Hey Dave, when I bought my sled used didn't come with tools. How do I find out what was in my tool kit originally? I have a 2002 mxz adrenaline 700 rer.
Hi Dom, Go to skidoo parts house...or even call a dealer, 2002 is not old. I think your kit would be part number 529035596 and I think it has the same tools mine does.
Of course a sled is always easier to start when it's warm. That said, if you've been trying for three hours, there's something wrong other than your recoil. This method is doing the same thing your recoil is doing, you just have to rewind it manually. Sorry you're having a hard time though. Hope you get it worked out soon.
Is to hard for me to start the snowmobile, I can't pull the cord hard enough is there an easier way to do that , like to replace the cord for an easier one ? I had an electric start put A big oooo pine tree got in my way , and it went to greener pastures, just like I almost did.
Hi Marialuisa. What kind of sled? Primer or choke? Some sleds are just harder to pull over. A few tips: Remember to shut the fuel off if you are going to let it sit for a while. Try putting your left foot on the running board and using both hands to pull it. I do that with my 670 when it's cold. Try pulling the starter rope out slowly to move the pistons and get some oil moving, then pull it to start. You could try exercising to build strength, in your upper body...(curling weights). How often do you put fresh spark plugs in? I do every season. Won't make it easier to pull the starter, but if it's easier to start, it helps. Of course all of this is assuming your sled is in good working order. Sorry there is no easy answer. Thanks for watching. Hi Connor. What did you have in mind? I think you want something thats designed to slip off easily. Different sleds have different emergency starts. I think some come with more of a strap rather than a rope.
Just saved me when I was stranded on the side of the trail. Thank you
Seriously? That's awesome. Glad you got home safe. Thanks for watching.
I've watched a video on this once before and totally forgot how it was done. Thanks Dave! Great thing for people to know.
Thanks for the comment J.
Thanks for the posts Dave. I just purchased a 1998 MXZ 670 and can't wait to get out on the trails. Enjoying your posts up in Fort McMurray.

Hi John, thanks for watching. Hope you get a lot of snow.
You can also use a leather belt or tow rope around the primary, counter clockwise. Same idea, rap it and overlap the start, pull it fast so that it clears the primary when it starts.
Awesome tip, when in doubt if you don't have the tool kit, at least have some kind of small rope just incase you need it, that's what I do

Hey Yeezes. Good idea.
Hi Dave! What is that plastic clip called and how do I find one for my old Polaris Indy Trail? Thanx!
I think you may have to check around on line. I had to buy the toolkit.
You could search for Snowmobile Emergency Starter...there are a few different components around.
Thanx! I will. Good rides!
just wondering where you got the new toolkit from I would like to replace mine, thanks
You can find them on ebay occasionally. I got mine from Fullertons.
Hey I live in North Pole alaska witch is very cold so I have to where A lot of gear I was wondering what temperature is it around you??
Hi haha... I'd say often -10, sometimes -17, occasionally -32. (-26f) right now unfortunately it's mild...rain.

I have a 1998 grand touring. Anyway to start the sled of the key ignition fails? I can't put it on the On position.
I believe if you disconnect it from the main harness it will start. The key grounds the ignition out.
@@MyOldSled Gotcha. Thanks for the quick response and the good videos! They've been very helpful.
Can you tell me best replacement pull cord for skidoo and where to purchase
Thank you
Are you in Canada? You could try royal distributing
Hey can you do a video of what to do if your breaks don't work in the middle of the trail? And btw nice videos
Working on it Baseball....
Do it on a cold start you know if it breaks first pull off the morning
My sled normally starts cold second pull, but definitely it would be much easier on a warm sled.

I’m so tired of replacing kimpex starters. Is there an electric start that I can get?
I guess you could get one from a Grand Touring. You’d need battery, primary gear, starter, handle bar switch... might be easier to buy a sled with e start.
LOL one time I had to use a tow rope to start the sled. Really thick rope but it did the trick!

do you do a 32:1 gas /oil ratio or just straight gas in her ? i have a bombardier rotax 670x
Just straight gas. It’s oil injected and I trust it :)

Easier said then done when ur sled is warm, I’ve been tryna start mine for 3 hours and it usually takes 2 pulls with the recoil
