      Hey, I recently bought a used 2012 Polaris XLT 550 from someone. Waiting for snow to fall to try it. But since I am totally new to snowmobiles I would greatly prefer tips, such as which engine oil to use or whatever else I need to know. Fuel should be 91 Octane I understand. Any advice would be helpful.
      Thanks in advance.

    Would just like to add that if your someone who just bought a brand new sled from your dealer. Odds are it will smoke a fair amount until it's out of the break-in period. I know that Polaris sleds with the electronic oil pump are set to provide more oil for the first few hours of operation above a set rpm. That's just to ensure the new piston rings seat properly while they are worn in. Otherwise good video!

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 года назад

      Hi. Yep, most newer sleds have a number of break in procedures and oil pump enrichment programs. You might see a slight increase in smoke. Thanks for watching

    I'm new to the sled world. One reason being that sleds smoke, stink = pollute . I don't know anything about sleds so was happy to find your channel. You do a great job in your presentations. Thank You ! for taking the time to share your knowledge.
    I bought an old 1998 Polaris 700 RMK to use as a workhorse to get me into the backcountry for skiing. It has sat for sometime. Once I got it I would start it every couple of months. It always starts with a few pulls.
    I recently had some sort of fuel leak on a monthly startup and shut it down. A week later turned on the gas and saw no leak, but it wouldn't start. A week later it did start and couldn't find any leak. I used the sled for the first time and it ran well. Once back on the trailer and back home it wouldn't start.
    Back into the garage it went. I opened up the cover and took a closer look at the carbs I discover what I think was the source of the leak with a line on one side of a carb disconnected. I decided to remove the carbs and cleaned. Once I completed the work it fired up.
    Now when it smokes there seems to be a certain amount of oil or fuel mixed into the exhaust that leaves a residue on the floor that I don't remember it being that way. I could have just been oblivious before to the residue. Is this typical.
    Any thoughts.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  Год назад

      Hi Mark. Thanks for the kind words. On older carbureted sleds, you tend to get a certain amount of oil/gas in the pipe. If its running a bit rich, it can be a bit worse. If it’s really noticeably dripping gas/oil, its suggesting incomplete combustion of the charge in the cylinder. Low compression, bad fuel, blocked air filters etc…I’m guessing you’re just noticing it since you’ve been working on the sled, and it could be a bit worse since you’ve been sitting still messing around. There may be a little extra accumulated in the crank case. I’d check everything over - make sure the air screw is set to manufacturer spec, put fresh plugs and gas, blow out the air box and take it for a good run. Hope that helps. Thanks for watch!

    • @spfadden082711
      @spfadden082711 Год назад

      It is starting rich and it may not be bad thing. It should clean up a bit after it runs. It’s better to be a little rich than lean.

    Great video Dave. I have a 2 stroke 1998 Ski Doo, Grand Touring. Sure it smokes when I first start it up but soon after warmup the smokes subsides considerably. I wondered for a while after buying this sled used if that was normal but soon discovered it was normal. I always use OEM oil and zero methanol gasoline to minimize any uncertainties and to have consistency so that if there are any changes in how the engine performs I know there’s a potential issue.

    As I expect, my only operational two-smoker, a 1980 Alpine, smokes a fair bit when cold but clears up once it warms up. I can guarantee its not the oil pump because the 640 ER engine was pre-mix only.

    I have a 2009 Ski-doo MXZ Renegade 600 Etec and it barely smokes. That's obviously because it's fuel injected, but I've had 4 older sleds that weren't fuel injected, and they smoked a lot. It's pretty normal for those things to smoke. I honestly didn't know that white smoke meant coolant leak, I guess now I know why my old sled that always smoked white had overheating issues. This is a very informative video, keep up the great work

    Depending what oil you use can effect the amount of smoke you get too. I know whenever I pass someone on the trail running royal purple oil, I think it is, I can smell it instantly, just has a different smell almost sweet smelling. That is one clean mxz 670 he has, had one of those years ago and that thing was a rocket for it's time. Crazy that years ago people had choices for motor size, ski Doo alone had 380, 440f, 440l, 500f, 500l, 583, 670, and then 440, 500, 600, 700, 800, 1000, triples and so on. And now today it's like 600 or 800 unless you want a 4-stroke 🤮. Just don't get why they stopped making a smaller engine, like say you have a 12-14 yr old child, too big for the 120s like the mini z or kitty Kat but don't want to throw your child on a 600 yet. Growing up I started with a Yamaha bravo 250, then went to a 340, the a 500 (first ski Doo and never looked backed ) then the mxz 670 and then mxzx rev 600ho and then mxzx xp 800. I'ld put that mxzx rev 600ho against any new 600 snowmobile and either keep up or beat it so? And until 60-70mph it sticks right with an 800, so I wouldn't want my child to go from a 120 child's sled to a 600 and seems the manufacturers have nothing in-between these days.

    I ride a 96 jag 440 deluxe I have found that my sled smokes until I put about 2 fresh tanks of gas in it for the season which is probably caused by stable I leave it up north so usually i put some type of fuel additives in before I park it for the weekend if you buy a used sled the smoking could be caused by to much additives to the gas tank. Love the videos and little tips keep it up.

    2 strokes smoke on carbureted sleds, dirt bikes, atv's, weed whackers, leaf blowers, outboards... It's what they do. You're burning oil in the combustion chamber to lubricate pistons, cylinders and bearings. Unless you have a new direct injected 2 stroke snowmobile or 4 stroke, expect it to smoke standing still. If it didn't, that's a BIG problem if you aren't pre-mixing fuel, lol. I think people should really have a very basic understanding of their machines before they even consider purchasing one in my opinion. I'm new to the sport, but I still did a lot of homework before buying an "old sled" this year (2006 Ski Doo GSX 500) even though I have ATVs, its different. Makes me wonder if people don't know just the very basic sled operations, will they take the time to know trail etiquette? Good video, made me think.

      Oh, I don't know. I bought my first one knowing nothing, and learned as I went. Had lots of fun learning. Based on my experience, I would say there are probably lots of folks who don't spend any time spinning wrenches but would take the time to learn to operate a machine safety and those who enjoy riding, but are content to let the shop take care of everything else. I think that's ok. Welcome to the sport...hope you get lots of snow

One of those friends that like to tinker with things thinking they know what they’re doing! When they really don’t. But I have been having trouble with my sled staying started it’s to do with the carburetors I believe. The screw on the top of the carburetors I believe it’s the choke screw on both carburetors I don’t really know how to adjust them I was wondering if you had a video for that or some advice

    • @MyOldSled

      What exactly is it doing? It will normally need a few shots on the primer to keep it running until it starts to warm up. Going from memory…left side idle screw, it is relatively straight in and out. Right side, air screw, angles down: adjusts mixture lean or rich at idle. Idle should be around 1700 rpm +/- 100 or so. Make sure to adjust both the same.

    Hey David, I just acquired a 97, summit 670. It smoked very bad. I’ve since cleaned the carbs out, replaced the fuel pump, the primer pump, changed replaced the fuel hoses, cleaned the gas tank out and hose inside the tank along with the filter. So before I did all that it smoked super bad ( all blue smoke) and wouldn’t stay running. Now it still smokes ( not quite as bad ) it also still won’t idle. it seems like one of the cylinders is getting gas. I can see gas in the hose on the one cylinder but none on the other side. Any thoughts?

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  2 года назад

      H Rev. Jim. Hmmm...well, its not unusual to see some coming out of the pipe. I don't know all sleds, but believe that sled is oil injected...The armature on the oil pump can get sticky or weak return spring and it injects too much oil, or something is causing incomplete combustion. Have you checked the compression in the sled. Stale gas? Was it fogged for storage?

    • @rev.jimwalton9383
      @rev.jimwalton9383 2 года назад

      @@MyOldSled I really appreciate you getting back.....it is oil injection...compression was 90 in both barrels, I did put new gas in...but I haven't checks the armature on the pump and no it wasn't fogged for storage, but when i start it up my garage sure is...had to put that in. It literally drips from the exhaust, and left a trail up the laneway...could be a fire hazard!

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  2 года назад

      Rev, I’m not a mechanic, but 90 seems low to me. I had a quick peek at the forums and I think id be looking for 110 or more. Generally under 100 is starting to look bad on most motors. I’d double check with your local dealer. Low compression can cause incomplete combustion which could cause unburned fuel and oil to pass through the system. See if anyone else weighs in.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  2 года назад

      Also, have you pulled the plugs? Wondering if one side is wet and fouled. If its running on one cylinder you’d get fuel and oil from the pipe.

      I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this...any advise is great. I've thought about pulling the drive belt and hook ing a horse on the front. lol But i did pull the plugs and one does seem wetter than maybe it should be...going to check the spark. Something else i was thinking about was the oil lines running to the carbs...one throat seems damp, so I'm going to check tat one line (going to the other) might be plugged forcing all oil into the one carb....like you, not a mechanic but just taking a few shots....if not, the horse may not be a bad idea. Thanks again...ps, I'm better with old cars

    I wouldn't worry about white smoke, unless it's very creamy and persistent. If your sled ain't started in a while it's most likely just burning off excess oil. All I drive is the Polaris Indy Storm 800.... and you should have seen the one I started a few days ago.
