  • When you are new to starting a 2 stroke sled with a primer, it's very easy to flood your engine.
    Some older sled, like mine, can be pretty hard to pull over with a recoil starter.
    This video will help get you back on the trail and give you some pointers for starting your machine without flooding it.

    Thanks a lot for this. My sister in law and neice were at our cottage trying to get their sleds going and couldn't. I don't know a lot about sleds, I just never got in to them. But I have done a lot of small engine work and autmotive work to give her a hand. Knew we had gas and spark while they were in the garage, but after letting them sit for a good hour not even a sputtier when they were pull-started. Took plugs out on both and did this, worked on both instantly. I told them don't go far and lose my number if they won't start again (it's about 5 degreess here!). Thanks again.

    Hi Christian. Yes' the method should work with your indy as well.

  • @jomishx

    Great alternative but a faster, time proven method is to pull plugs and use a lighter and hold it over the cylinder hole. There will be a small poof. Gas is burned off. Do the same to the spark plug. Takes 2 minutes and your back in action. Throw the lighter in the storage on your sled and keep on sledding. Braaaap Braaaap

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 года назад

      Um, yeah…a lighter, under the hood of your old sled next to your flooded engine…what could possibly go wrong. Why go to all the 30 seconds of trouble of pulling your starter a couple of times…

    • @hoovercamaro
      @hoovercamaro 2 года назад +1

      Its more effective to use a Propane Torch and spin the engine over with the flame pointed into the spark plug hole, burns all the gas out and it warms the combustion chamber up significantly more making it easier to start, but personally at starting i don't use primers i add a drop of gas in each spark plug hole and my sleds fire on the fire pull.

      Hi Nathan, I never use heat on plugs and I never use an open flame under the hood of an old sled. If the plugs are out anyway, it takes all of 30 seconds to clear the fuel and wipe the plugs off. Thanks for watching.

    This reminds me of when I was 14, driving an old Polaris Indy Trail 488 around my home town in the Canadian Arctic. I accidentally tipped the old 488 over and it shut down... My cousin was around and did the same thing taking the plugs out and we got the machine running 5 minutes later!

    At times, you can get away by just holding the throttle wide open allowing more air to lean out the mixture and to aid in evaporating excessive fuel. However, once a spark plug(s) are soaked with fuel, they will have to be removed and dried thoroughly for them to ignite properly.
    Thank you for the video..following your procedures will surely get that machine back on the trails.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  5 лет назад

      Hi Daniel. You're not wrong, but if you've pulled a 670 over, especially cold, you'll understand that some riders just can't hold the throttle open and pull it over. I've found this a simple way to resolve the issue. Better yet was when I got the hang of starting it without flooding! Thanks so much for the comment, appreciate you sharing your experience.

    • @danielethier2015
      @danielethier2015 5 лет назад +1

      @@MyOldSled l cannot disagree with you in saying that, it would be impossible to pullstart, especially larger machines and to keep the throttle wide open at the same time. It definitely requires two hands to pull a cold machine.
      Given that my machine is equiped with an electric start, I have the option of first trying to unflood it by holding the throttle wide open.
      If this fails " which it has", your procedures are definitely the ones that will successfully get it started.
      My apologies, as I should have been more observant in regards to how to start a snowmobile, given the situation that you have clearly explained.
      Again, great video for I am sure that many will greatly bennefit from it.

      Thanks for a trip through memory lane. I was once a proud owner of an arctic cat 440z which came with the z suspension..given the colder temperatures due to the cooling factors required, this machine would definitely perform against the 600 class. The cylinders were ported in such a way that would surely define the true terms of having a power band.
      In its days, this machine would scare most riders who have had the opportunity to have tried it.
      I can set this as a true example of comparison to today's more modern sleds as I have had the opportunities to give a fair comparison.

    I had this happening to me today with my grandfather's old lynx 1998. Left it cold for about half an hour. I set the choke on half with no primer. That did not seem to be enough for startup so i pumped in two shots on the primer and this time the choke on full. And it just made things worse. Had to wait for an hour before the motor could finely start.

    • @MyOldSled

      Hi Elmenger. That would take the same length of time as doing it safely, with the added risk of placing an uncontained spark next to excess fuel. Since there's a reason the sled flooded, my preference is to not take the chance of igniting a fuel leak I didn't notice and starting a fire under my hood. Thanks for the post!

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  Год назад

      I’m not a fan, but if you get a decent quality one with lubricant in it, and use it properly, a short spray near the intake. Generally if it starts with starting fluid and doesn’t stay running you have a fuel problem. A properly maintained sled with clean carbs shouldn’t need it.

      It is possible, and I've done it....(generally not in 5 or 6 pulls). This method is a bit more trouble, but the 670 is a pretty hard pull, especially one handed for smaller riders. Add to that you're pulling left handed or with your left arm crossed over. Some sleds are harder to pull over. Pulling plugs is a pretty simple process.

    Do not use a rag to dry your spark plugs. The gap on spark plugs is sensitive, and if you dry it wrong, you will mess it up (it can be regapped, but not without a cheap tool that you probably don't have in your snowmobile bag). Just take the plugs out, and either blow on them or just set them off to the side. The gas will quickly evaporate due to the now high exposure to air, and your gap doesn't get knackered.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Justin, sorry for the delay in responding, I wanted to double check with NGK technical support before responding. The lateral (ground) electrode is made of steel which is welded to the side of the spark plug, and it normally takes a bit of force to narrow the gap, as you would when you tap it on a work bench to adjust the gap, or use a tool which is part of some gapping tools to bend it. Just wiping a standard spark plug with a rag/cloth should not change the gap, unless the plug is defective. If you were to go nuts and force part of the rag in between the central electrode and the ground hard, I suppose you could widen the gap, but just wiping it as shown shouldn’t change anything. The first year I had my sled, I flooded it a lot, and used this method quite a few times. The gas will evaporate, but the oil won’t. I prefer to wipe it, and start over with a clean dry plug. I appreciate the feedback though, spark plug gap does matter a lot more than most people realize.

      Hi Keigen. If you have an old 670 or 583 etc, and that works for you, your sled is far easier to start than most. I am not too proud to admit I would kill my arm trying to pull it one handed either with my left, or with my right crossed over to the throttle. I might be able to if the sled was already warm when I flooded it but cold, this method is far easier on the arm, even more so with a younger or smaller rider. Thanks for watching and commenting.
