    Most Skidoo take three primes to cold start. I also lift my prime before pulling the sled over, so I can quickly shoot another shot of fuel. Another good vid!

    Had a sled just like that one. The primer would "fool you" into thinking you were priming but the line was full of air. After pumping the primer repeatedly, pulling it through forever and calling the sled every name but SkiDoo when it wouldn't start, I realized the primer made a squeeking sound (as heard on the video) once fuel was actually flowing. After that, I could always tell when the lines were purged of air and actually priming the carbs without opening the hood.

    Thx for this video. Just had my 95 Ski Doo 500 Grand Touring dropped off to me last night. I’m a brand new rider (was on one about 25 years ago!) and he told me a bunch of tips and drove it off to a spot on my property. Today I remembered some of what he said and tried to start it - only to fail. BUT I did remember him saying 3 primes to start and then possibly 1 more. I also was scared of the pull start - thinking I might break the cord. Clearly that is not an issue. I’m a 57 year old (pretty fit and strong female), so just need to psych myself up for the hell that is a pull start!!
    Thanks for this very basic how-to video. Exactly what I needed.

    I have a mxz with a 617 and I just pull it without priming until it starts to putter and when it is running at low rpms (but running) I prime it. I do that so ensure it doesn't flood.

    Been thinking about adding a primer to the SRX 700. Haven't had the extreme cold like you though.
    Mine on the average starts after 3 pulls.
    Any thoughts?

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mark. I don't know much about your sled, sorry. I did look it up so it has a choke set up? Well..if it was me I'd be more inclined to keep it the way the engineers intended and check over the usual culprits for hard starting...clean, gapped plugs, good fuel, carbs clean and set up right, make sure the power valves weren't sticking open...I know people have added primers and it's not difficult or expensive but 3 pulls doesn't sound too bad for a manual start. Mine can be 2 or 3 when its cold. Just my thoughts, probably not too helpful...sorry.

    my sled that I recently purchased has no primer. It does have a choke. We started it up and it ran smooth then I pressed the kill swithc. Then tried turning it back on but it wouldn't start. Is it possible I could have flooded it? I watched your video on flooded snowmobiles but I don't know a lot about them so I am too worried to take the spark plugs out. Should I just let it sit for awhile?

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  7 лет назад +1

      Hard to say. You could try letting it sit. What did you do with the choke?

    • @iaproductions6599
      @iaproductions6599 7 лет назад

      We put the choke all the way up started it and put it down to half. When I try starting it again should I choke it?

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  7 лет назад

      If the sled ran and is warm, it shouldn't need to be choked. Try it without. Did you check the obvious? Make sure the fuel shutoff is on, if it has a safety tether, is it on solid. Those things have caught me. If it started and ran smooth it's probably something minor. Mine was a pain in the butt when I first got it.

    • @quentin3330
      @quentin3330 6 лет назад +1

      If u ever flood your engine, keep the choke on but floor the throttle while pulling...and keep pulling....it will fire up after 4 or 5 pulls usually....then it will run for probably about 10 seconds burning off the fuel then stall....don't panic...if this happens turn off the choke, lay off the throttle and pull...it should fire back up.

    Hi Dave. My 1998 Ski-doo is electric start and I was considering installing a primer. Im just wondering if this is a waste of time since it is electric start. Are primers meant for pull start sleds.

    • @MyOldSled

    Hello, with any sled that has a primer. If the sled has been sitting over night, Always prime it First. And during the day if the sled has been off for a few hours I'd prime it once. "no need to turn off your fuel valve unless your lines are leaking".

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Todd. The fuel shutoff should be off whenever the sled is stored or trailered. I usually turn mine off unless I'm going right back out as I find it stiffens up when it sits in one position. Thanks for posting. Sorry for the delay iin responding.

      I turned my fuel line off and actually caught a prick trying to steal my sled. He couldn't fire it up. It was a vintage sled that are easy to start without a key. This guy was too far away to actually catch....he got on the back of his buddy's sled and took off. Just glad i decided to turn on backyard flood lights when i did. Also glad i turned off fuel valve,lol.

    Hey Dave ! Have you tried using the Iridium Spark Plugs in your sled ? I did that last year and the Sled starts way more easier on cold starts. It only takes me 2 pulls sometimes even without priming ! It's got a crisper throttle response, and less chances of fouling ! The extra bucks for the Iridium Spark plugs is worth it ! Just wanted to give you the feed back !

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  9 лет назад

      +doobyboy21 Hey DB. No I haven't. I only use the manufacturers spec but I totally appreciate the input. Before I try them a couple of questions.
      After buying your sled, did you put a fresh pair of NGK BR9ES plugs in before trying the iridium? Did you gap them? (the BR9ES)
      The primary difference with iridium tipped plugs should be longevity. Can't imagine why they would be any less likely to foul.

    • @doobyboy21
      @doobyboy21 9 лет назад

      +My Old Sled Yes I did ! Gapped them to .20mm... But my sled wasn't running proper compression... Then I rebuilt the motor... I have a video of that on RUclips... Anyways... I ran another set of NGK BR9ES gapped them again, the plugs where ok... Then some guys at work where talking about the Iridium spark plugs how awesome they where in there sleds... So I decided to give them a try and never went back. I still run them today in my sled and I changed them not long after doing the topend rebuild ! I kept the non Iridiums as back ups ! Give them a try someday if you got the extra bucks ! They are the BR9EIX !

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 года назад

      I imagine you could. You need a gear on the back of the primary, a starter, solenoid, battery and switch. Its just a motor that turns the engine over. Your best bet is to hit a forum like doo talk and see if another owner has done it, or call Royal Distributing and see if theres a kit that fits. Not sure there was a sled like a Grand touring that you could get parts from. Also a good tune up, carb clean, new plugs might make it a little easier to start.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 года назад

      If its running, and theres a belt on it, and the brakes aren’t seized, give it throttle and it should start to move around 3800-4000 rpm. If you lift the back end off the ground, you should be able to spin the track by hand when its not running.

      +michael43 phillips That’s a good point M. Especially with these 2 strokes. Fire it up and let it idle for 5 min or so without revving until the engine reaches operating temp, the internals are lubricated and there is some heat at the heat exchanger. • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 года назад

      Hi Sheena. There is a cut in the edit there, it ran a little longer than that. That said though, it would do no more harm to the sled then it would any other time it stalls when its cold when starting. You should allow the sled to warm up briefly before riding, but shutting it down after starting won’t hurt anything. If you shut it off without letting the RPM drop, like when you pull in after riding, you could get a backfire next time you start, but again, won’t hurt. Thanks for watching and commenting.
