Pre-seed fertiliser is named badly. I agree with you but the point of putting it down at the same time as the seed a that it gets watered into the ground as the seeds are germinating and at that 2 week point have plenty of nutrients to go at. If you apply at the 2 week point then it’s another week at least before it can use it
Thanks for the tips!! Use mint mouthwash and dish soap to get rid of most mosquitoes. Nobody gets rid of all of them but this helps . I put a 1l bottle in a six litre sprayer with a tablespoon of soap.
I agree cut your lawn short. Scalp it even if you dont have time to bring it down slowly. But I overseed a lot and I mow regularly after overseeding. You wss don't hurt the seedlings. They will grow. Especially kbg. I overseeded and mowed 2x a week until I saw germination then mowed once a week after. Granted I reel mow at 5/8" so i dont use any suction and I think the roller makes better seed to soil contact. I feel survival.of the fittest. What lasts will conquer.
One problem i had that no channels are showing is making sure you have used grub killer or grub control, i have spots now where the overseed had died right after germination, just before the 1st cut
I can understand that. If there is even a chance that there would be a grub issue I will put down either nematodes and bacillus thuringiensis just before starting an overseeding. You can apply either at any time though.
Number 7 here I didn't pay attention to the weather and it was a new lawn I had it so smooth and all sowed down when we got all that rain from hurricane Helene washed most my seed and soil I'm in KY I should have watched the weather. Its looking ok but got runts all in it ill level next fall.
Starter fertilizer is only beneficial if your soil lacks Phos. For those that used Milo for years probably have Phos levels off the charts. I would recommend a soil test as Phos simply could take years and years to come down to optimal levels. I use all phos free ferts for the past 3 season and phos is still extremely high. Planting seed hasn't been a problem without throwing un necessary phos. good video though.
I understand where you are coming from for sure. The fact is that new seedlings have poorly developed root systems and do not absorb nutrients effectively from soil. The small blast of fertilizer, including P, is more easily absorbed by the roots of the new grass.
Do you always recommend putting the starter fert at time of seeding or waiting something like 5 days? I've read the starter fert can make the existing grass grow faster too and takeover the seedlings
Cutting the grass short will slow it's growth. I always apply the starter fertilizer at the same time as the seed. Though the existing grass may out pace the new grass, that is just the way to is going to go sometimes. I let the new grass grow to 4 inches and cut it back to 3.
Should I over seed a new lawn this fall I’m in the state of Indiana I have put down topsoil and fertilizer expecting rain tomorrow and it’s windy so I have a couple of more days to give it a try
Seeds have all the energy they need to germinate and grow. Starter fertilizer isn't needed until 2 weeks after germination.

Well said.
I like your clear explanations. Easy to understand.

I have not heard that one before. I will give it a shot for sure.

Just made that mistake I'm having skunks, possoms, and coons tearing up my new grass digging up grubs. I've caught two and set two traps tonight.
Great advice.

I am sorry to hear that. Truthfully I would relevel it now.

What's a recommended phos free fertilizer?

Good stuff! 👍
Thanks! 👍

You are running a bit late. What type of grass seed are you think of going with?
