I grew up in Maryland and I constantly went to "crab feasts" in summer, nothing beats it, it must be done on a giant table wit a mountain of steamed crabs coated in Old Bay and dipping options of apple vinegar and melted butter. And the shells would go to another seperate mountain on the other side of the table. Many other Maryland families I knew never participated in these, it's really more of a working class tradition of the coastal farmer types than my friends and their fancy lives near DC. Crab Feast recipes are VERY SPECIFIC and are NEVER done ANY other way. p.s. nobody says crab boil. It's called a Crab Feast.
Used to enjoy my time as a young kid.. going to Galveston, Texas... meeting my aunt, uncle, and cousins. Enjoying ourselves in the bay waters. Floating around w no care. Yes. Mid-60's @ South-East Texas.
This series is amazing. It doesn’t just tell you about the food we eat but the origins in the traditions that go into them. I have a lot of respect for all of this knowledge.
Much love for Marylanders for sure! Life growing up in Maryland was truly one of the best times in my life. Those were some beautiful Marylanders you spoke to - they truly represent the state well, thank you for that.
I’m glad people are bringing attention to Maryland and Baltimore specifically. We have so many cool things everyone should experience, especially our crabs !
My husband doesnt understand when I say we need to go to Maryland for crab. Sigh. "Not from Maryland" but i lived there for a couple of years when my dad was stationed there.
This is like my 5th video in a row, and I swear the David is such a mellow guy. One of the best interviewers hands down. Also your edit and video guy is on point
As a native “Baltimoron” I support the efforts to keep this Bay as clean as possible. The largest bay in the United States. I’m afraid to say, it’s a common local joke about how nasty the waters are. I truly hope the best efforts can be made to preserve it as much as possible. Long live the Chesapeake Bay blue crab!!! P.S. As long as Old Bay is involved
Did I miss something, or did you do a full episode on MD Blue Crabs without mentioning Old Bay or talking about how it's almost as much a staple as the crab itself?
I'm so glad crab catchers like the last elderly couple are keeping the crab population going by only harvesting "ripe" ones. Hopefully throwing younger ones back into the sea can become a law much like certain fish requirements that are in place nowadays. Man this is making me hungry for some crab, which happens to be one of my favorite foods as well. Too bad I live in the mid-south
They sell the best live hard and soft shell I have ever gotten. I got 3 dozen about two months ago in fact. When I want to get 'em live and cook them myself. I Only Go to Coveside. They are a little pricier than out of the back of some guys truck. But trust me, They are worth it. You can probably find some places down there that serve crabs. Try looking into places where you could buy them live. Get a steamer pot with a raised tray, some Apple Cider Vinegar, and water and a beer or two. Old Bay And D.I.Y. Good luck
We used to live in Va and every Sunday we would go to Billy’s in Popes Creek and eat crabs for hours. I miss them they are my all time favorite food. We had the opportunity to go to Bethesda a few weeks ago and we had the best crabs ever. We live in Pa and so worth the trip!! The prices have really gone up since the 90’s but that’s ok, every delicious bite was more than worth it 🦀🦀🦀❤️❤️❤️
I love to crab off the pier of Sandy point state park in Maryland beside the Chesapeake bay bridge. All of these fishermen say the same thing I'd rather be here than in a office. They are damn right.
I love soft crab sandwiches. On white bread ,with Lettuce and tomatoes and mayo. And Fried Hard Crab. Cooked in that Batter .Yummy .And then there is the .Maryland Crab Cake .And then you have Steamed Crabs. As you can tell I am. And born and raised in Maryland.
North Carolina harvests more blue crabs than Maryland but Maryland's obsession is surpassed by no one. I don't mess with hard shell these days but certainly eat my share of fried soft shell and crab cakes. Delicious. That shot of Capt. Young taking a drag slo-mo is classic and he seems like a cool fellow indeed but is he saying that soft shell harvesting is bad for the industry? Never heard that but will research. Another excellent episode.
@ Tosh T: Because if you keep harvesting the young soft shell crab, they won't be able to mate and keep replenishing; they'll deplete in no time and there'll be nothing left for future generations!
+Steve Endicott Well, it's not just the young ones that get harvested. Male crabs *molt* all their lives as they outgrow their shells and the best soft shell crabs are the larger ones due to the quantity of meat so they've definitely had a chance to mate...often many times. Of course I did read yesterday that the females only molt once so perhaps the experts in the video were advocating tossing back the females. I don't believe they were clear on that.
Marylander here. I crab the upper bay end of summer to mid fall. You're totally right, most places around here are imported crab. You can truly tell the difference. This year was awesome but the commercial guys crushed it while they were around.
My mom from Maryland i was born on TX, i miss going up there to visit my fam! We boil the crabs in beer & old bay 😋😋 i miss the sub sandwich up there too!
ayo when i watched this video i was proud to be a marylandier but as soon as i seen lee and richard it took it home living in bmore everyone who buys crabs towards essex knows they place and the almost home like feeling watching them on this video is crazy#410 REP
Great Video thanks and I agree entirely. Wish we could do more for the western part of the bay also. I live In the Hampton Roads area now and all fishing is better on the eastern shore.
I live in Maryland but very close to DC and therefore Virginia and I haven't had much exposure to our apparent blue crab culture. Of course maybe once a month I might have crab cakes for dinner. My uncle lived on the Chesapeake so he obviously knows how to shell a crab. Even here people have those crab maryland flag stickers on the rear of their cars though. I only had old bay seasoning on some crab cakes my uncle made a couple years ago. I don't remember what it tasted like or did to the crab.
I worked at a seafood restaurant when I was a teenager. We would get bushels of crabs and trying to get the "hot" crabs out of the bushel into the steamer was a bit crazy. Was much easier after they were in the walk-in for a bit. (Was a cook and not the steamer, so I didn't have to deal with it.)
Lived in Annapolis for 19 years. Love the crabs! If they are thriving and there is more volume and cleaner water, why do they cost so much???? And some of the most expensive and smallest crabs were had at The Point. Never went back. There are many places so much better.
I lived in St Mary's County MD .. used to walk down the road and go crabbing on the docks ..This was 30 years ago ..My girlfriend goes back every year to visit family for two weeks .. and Crabs are her thing ... until she tells me what they now charge .. at a restaurant ..$80.00 a half dozen and 100.00 a dozen ???? .. One place was amazing to go to .. was Evan's Seafood House in St Georges MD .. in the middle of nowhere on the Potomac .. place was always packed and had a line outside .. I kinda miss my ole state .. but had to leave .. Taxes to high

Fellow marylander, this is all true
Hello I’m from Texas and would like to check out marylands crab festivals. What is the best time to experience this?
Maryland is perfect, it’s my starting line when I start talking about Maryland and everyone knows how much I love that state.
“If I’m makin a crab stock, I want that shi- I want that stuff in there”
Nice
"Nothing beats a traditional Maryland crab boil." Blew it. We steam em' here!
The guy must be a west coaster.
They boil them down south. I just don’t understand that method.

Right! fuck that lemon shit lol
Yea yea, steam em
Or J.O. seasoning.
i took my brother in law out for crabs near Curtis bay, he was just mind melted by the experience. Still mentions it from time to time.

The best part of taking a non-Marylander to a crab feast is seeing their face when you hand them the mallet.
My husband doesnt understand when I say we need to go to Maryland for crab. Sigh. "Not from Maryland" but i lived there for a couple of years when my dad was stationed there.
I'll be learning how to do that in July. I've only had soft shell down south.

Didn't see too much old bay on the crabs. More J.O. spice judging by the texture.

Crab boil? On the eastern shore this is virtually unheard of - we steam things here 🙂
I once went to a restaurant in Maryland. Specifically in Annapolis. And I’m not even lying, they have wonderful clam chowder.

How did they not talk about old bay?!!! thats half of the crab right there
Old Bay is amazing, don't get me wrong. But honestly, sometimes I think it's used to cover the flavor of sub-par crab.
Actually it's spiced with j and o spice then when you eat it you throw allll the old bay on it.
J.O. is local...it surpasses Old Bay.

They have a crab festival in Crisfield, MD in July. Tawes crab festival.
In the bahamas we fry the crab fat in a pot and add rice (along with the crab).
i love going to lp steamers in the city for some crabs and they’re delicious 😋
One for the locals - if you're in Baltimore in (say) Mid October - where's the best place to get blue crab?
In Maryland, we say warder, not water.
Here on the Eastern Shore, water sounds more like "wooder"
No, we don't
I say wooder...my Cali wife says I'm saying it wrong....I than remind her where she now lives...wooder!
