I heard somewhere that when they were making the movie they wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Harold Hill. Meredith willson who wrote the music told the studio that if they did not take Robert Preston they could not make the movie. I really applaud Mr Wilson. I honestly don't think Frank Sinatra would have been as good.
To be honest, it wouldn’t make my top ten and I still find it incredible that it took so many Tony’s in 1958, including best musical, when it was up against West Side Story, which is a masterpiece.
Robert Preston. Good grief. What a force of nature. I remember hearing it said that he did "talk-singing", with the implication that it was cheating, but here he is, belting out the melody with the force of a trombone. Jack Black did this number in a movie, and it was fine, but he didn't have Preston's voice.

Nobody could have pulled off the trouble number better than Robert Preston
Not only did they try to get Sinatra, but the producers tried to get James Cagney, Bing Crosby, and Cary Grant. All of them turned it down pretty much for the same reason - Preston owned the role from playing it on stage, and they wanted him to play it. Grant even said he would not bother to see it if Preston wasn’t in it, which I imagine would have caused something of a scandal at the time
Our family has watched this every 4th of July for decades.
My favorite Musical. Robert Preston was great in this role.

The story varies. Sometimes it's Sinatra that said if Preston didn't get the role, that he wouldn't go see it. @@aminsadeghpour1549
My grandmother always whistled to this song Seventy-Six Trombones
Robert Preston was the best in this role.

Tell me again why Robert Preston wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for this performance? Smh.

I doubt many, if ANY have quite his voice... :D
He has a gritty melodic bel canto voice !
Thank you so much for posting this. I've searched YT for several years without being able to find this, only the closing version of the song.
I don’t know why it’s hard to finds this version. thank you

Frank Sinatra, LOL? Rex Harrison might have been OK if it weren't for his British accent. But Sinatra is laughable.

What a wonderful star he was
I don’t know how this actually helps my baby not to cry anymore, but this video helps he just wants to march with the 76 trombones
Absolutely marvellous, Robert Preston was a genius
Thank you so much for this video!
Love this movie. The singing, acting, dancing and music was wonderful.
Other people have done Professor Harold Hill and done well but Robert Preston owns Harold Hill.
You know, Harold Hill was a con man in it for the money but kids in a band or in some positive activity aren’t getting into trouble.
Ronald Howard started as a child star, look at him now.
That's more like it ROBERT
His great Broadway success then his greatest film success
Robert Preston as "THE MUSIC MAN" "76 TROMBONES"
I'm so sorry I never saw him live
You saw him dead???
"PURE BOYS!"
Need to see this in full movie this is fabulous
Let's face it, the elaborately choreographed synchronized dancing is what carries this number.
One of the legendary musical Numbers
Monorrieeeeeeeelll
Mono---
DOH!!!
Preston was a Hollywood great , they don’t exist anymore.
How they don't recognize him from the town square singing about Trouble
Do you see when they are dancing, and Preston is in the deep, left background, and a shoe hits his face?
They wanted Cary Grant or Frank Sinatra to play Prof Harold Hill believe it or not what idiots
Don't waste your time thinking those two wouldn't have kicked the shit out of this role.
The music man would not have been as great without Robert Preston
Meredith Wilson told the producers, according to Shirley Jones, "You do not make this movie unless you use Robert Preston. "
You're the idiot for not seeing their potential to pull the role off in their own distinct way.
I just picked up this record at an estate sale
DId you buy any estates?
I would have sworn this was dick van dyke 😅
...or Shirley Temple, right?
For some reason I woke up this morning with this song going through my head, so I had to look up the video
No name brought me here
And I don't give a sht.
