For some reason I woke up this morning with this song going through my head, so I had to look up the video

December 19th 1957, The Music Man opens on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Ah to have been there ! Willson's valentine to his childhood with two perfect songs sung first and then sung again in counter melody. Brilliant.

Just perfect. Can’t put into words how wonderful this is.

I’ve always loved the song but I was kind of waiting for the vignettes to fade away, revealing the two sets to be neighboring one another, and the Buffalo Bills to stroll over to Shirley Jones for the closing verses. _Edit:_ I guess that can’t happen in the context of the film since the place where Harold Hill is staying can’t really be next door to Marion’s home but it’s a movie so it wouldn’t necessarily have to make sense.

For the memory of my mom who sang this when I was sick. ❤

You know, Harold Hill was a con man in it for the money but kids in a band or in some positive activity aren’t getting into trouble.

I prefer 'My White Knight' but this is ok.

I love the lyrics, they're spot on for how I felt. I found him, too, 45 years ago. Shirley makes it perfect, what a voice.

Shirley Jones describes how she got her first big career break at 20 years-old, when she went to an open audition in NYC that Rogers & Hammerstein held every two weeks. When the audition coordinator heard her sing, he got both Rogers & Hammerstein to come and hear her. Jones stated she wasn't totally sure who Richard Rogers was. They hired her on the spot. First was in the chorus in South Pacific. This version is my favorite over the Broadway version. This one has more heart and more in line with what most women feel.

I heard somewhere several years ago that when they were casting The music Man they wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Harold hill. Meredith willson who wrote the music said you don't make the movie unless you take Robert Preston. I honestly applaud Mr Wilson. I don't think Frank Sinatra would have been as good. Nobody could have pulled off the trouble number better than Robert Preston

Hearing this for the first time makes Storm Front's performance way more impressive than it already was

Robert Preston. Good grief. What a force of nature. I remember hearing it said that he did "talk-singing", with the implication that it was cheating, but here he is, belting out the melody with the force of a trombone. Jack Black did this number in a movie, and it was fine, but he didn't have Preston's voice.

In the original Broadway show the song here was originally called my white knight. Personally I like this song a lot better.
