  • Yom Kippur is the second of our High Holidays. It’s a day of solemn reflection and confession of our collective sins from the previous year. Our traditions on the day tell us a lot about how Judaism views human flaws and the need to start the year with a clear conscience.

    Love your great explanation of the Yom Kippur basics. As many, I'm here as a christian and am glad to see other christians investigating the holidays in the Torah. Even if we believe in Yeshua as the Messiah, the holidyas have not changed, God has not changed. Humans have not changed either, so I'm also reflecting on myself and confess my sins with you tomorrow on Yom Kippur. May Adonai bless you and keep you, may He shine His light upon you and give you His peace. Keep up the great content!

    That was very special to explain how you think of those that do not have food to eat on this day. Wishing you a meaningful YK :)

    Loved your explanation, Marti. I personally loved those images of the book of life in the Yom Kippur prayers as a child and all of the up and down and participation. I’m looking forward to being able to take my children to the adult services one year soon...maybe next year for my big girl. This was lovely. I hope yours was a good Rosh Hashanah. Gmar chatima tova, Marti.

    Thanks for this. I'm Catholic and I live in a community with many families who celebrate. I've always wanted to know but feel goofy asking. Thank you!

    The three prayers are interesting.
    When Jacob blessed his son Joseph, he used the name of God three times. Each time God's name was identified differently.

      @@SongbirdChildofGod I'm here as a Christian too. Feeling in my spirit and from observations of this year 2020, that something is being "opened" both good and bad. I have never learned about Yom Kippur, until just recently, but a day of fasting and repentance seems to be in order, so I'm doing my research as well.

      @Everyday Jewish Mom
      -The writers of the NT were Jewish
      - The person that was the atonement for sins was Jewish.
      - The genealogy from Abraham to David to the person on the cross was a Jewish lineage.
      - The writers of the NT were talking to their fellow Jewish brothers and sisters.
      - From what I heard, believing in NT is the fulfillment of being Jewish.

      I understand you are trying to make a joke, but to most viewers that may read your question for years to come, they will probably find it somewhat ignorant, in poor taste, and disrespectful toward this wonderful kind lady trying to help many, but I would like to try to explain so as to hopefully inspire you to think twice before making a joke of this sort in the future, and especially to be more respectful towards good people and about any holiday or subject of such importance to many.
      The term "High holiday" is meant as a holiday considered to be of a somewhat higher importance than other holidays .

    Amen, we can never be good enough for G-d! That is why our salvation, our atonement, is not based on what we can do. G-d took away all our sins 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem when Yeshua our Messiah was sacrificed as the Passover lamb. We will never have a "clear conscience" if we deny our only way to be atoned! Isaiah 53 tells us that Messiah was led away to be slaughtered as a lamb, that in him we have the atonement for all our sins. It is never enough to "do better" or "try harder." The Israelites never trusted in themselves to be made right before G-d. It was only ever the blood of the slaughtered lamb that cleansed them! How much more does the blood of Messiah atone us from all unrighteousness! Read Isaiah 53 for yourselves and see what it says about Yeshua.
