Shalom, I come from a family of mixed religious traditions - Catholic and Jewish. As a child we celebrated Hanukkah and Christmas , Passover and Easter. The traditions are amazing and reveal so much for us. The Feast of the Dedication story in Maccabees is not in the Torah yet it is in Catholic Sacred Scripture. Never understood why the story is not included in the Hebrew Torah yet somehow made it into the Catholic Bible. Peace be with you.

I think that here in the states Hanukkah has become much more celebrated; I believe that this is because Christmas predominates.
As it happens, Hanukkah follows a different calendar, so it will not always occur during the Christmas season.
My best friend in my youth was Jewish. I learned a great deal about Jewish culture. Ridiculously (remember I was a child) I felt sorry for him at Christmas; he didn't celebrate Christmas of course, so there was no tree or carols or Santa - but worst of all
there were no presents ! I felt horrible.
Until his Bar Mitzvah. I sat on his couch with him while he opened one letter after the next; each of them had very generous monetary gifts - and I mean 'a lot' of money, A LOT of money. 'WOW' I thought, I want to be Jewish too ! 🤦 just kidding.
    I didn't feel bad anymore. 🤐

If the first evening's candle is supposed to burn down, and on and on, do you replace the first when adding the second and so on? So, instead of eight candles through the holiday, does that mean you need to have a stock of 64 candles?

    • @EverydayJewishMom

The first night we light 1 candle plus the helper candle (2 total). Second night we use 3 and so one. It’s 44 candles total and Hanukkah candles are sold in boxes for 44.

    • @EverydayJewishMom

Yes, the only rule is that candles have to burn for 30 mins. You can make a menorah out of anything. There are tons ways to make a menorah. Also, see if there is a Chabbad in your area. If you’re Jewish, they’ll give you candles and help you get a menorah.

Is it OK to read Torah and learn about Jewish religion and be Jewish even if you do not have Jewish ancestry? I was not raised with any religion outside of teachings about traditional land and dream time from my mum and elders in the community. But it was mostly learning about animals and nature and to respect elders and be loyal and hard working. Is it OK for someone who has no religion to choose to belong to Jewish religion like for example how people choose to adopt Buddha and Buddhism? I am from Australia and grew up on country , but now I have been living in Finland for 6 years and most people are Christian but I have never been exposed to the bible, church or raised in a Christian tradition.

    • @EverydayJewishMom
      @EverydayJewishMom  2 года назад

You’re always welcome to learn. In order to study Torah the way we do, you need to do it with other Jews. And to become Jewish you need to go though a conversation process.

    Kids read everyday Isaiah 7:11-16
Then he retorted: "Listen, house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you also try the patience of my God? therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: the maiden is with child and she will bear a son, and will call his name Immanuel

Actually it's mentioned in The New Testament. The Bible says, And he (Jesus) went up to Jerusalem for the feast of dedication. Hanukkah is called the feast of lights/feast of dedication. It's a prophecy of Jesus being the light of the world and a celebration of the true Temple of God, the church, Jews and gentiles.

@Haxkarl CHRISTmas is not a pagan holiday. Yes, Constantine aligned it to the winter solstice but it’s not a pagan holiday.

Marti, I have enjoyed subscribing to your RUclips channel this year. I'm not Jewish, but I've long been interested in learning about Jewish holidays because my mother taught secular studies at our local Jewish day school for
10 years back in the 1960s, and she shared what she'd learned with my father and me.
I would like to share something I came up with last year around Hanukkah, when you had your video on making jelly doughnuts for the holiday. I had eaten so many jelly doughnuts from Whole Foods during that time that I wanted to come up with something that wouldn't make me feel so guilty.
I bought a bag of Whole Foods "Snowflake" dinner rolls from their bakery, just the right size and shape. I had strawberry preserves, butter, and sugar on hand. I heated one snowflake roll in the microwave for 10 seconds. That made it slightly softer and the right texture for what comes next. Using a grapefruit spoon, I gently bore a cavity from the side of the warm roll down into its center. Then I spooned strawberry jam into the cavity. Then I brushed the top of the roll with the smallest amount of softened butter and sprinkled it with a little granulated turbinado sugar. Repeat for as many "jelly doughnuts" as you need. These really are delicious. I should mention that I don't think the Whole Foods snowflake rolls are Kosher.

      @@EverydayJewishMom Thanks, Marti!
It took me a few tries to determine how many seconds to microwave the snowflake roll so that it would be warm and just soft enough. Too soft, and the next step of filling it with the preserves won't work right. Since every microwave is different, you might have to try several different times to find the best one. My microwave is 1200 watts.
