  • In this episode of The Dirt, host Bryan Furnace delivers a brief, easy-to-understand overview of the importance of DEF and guidance on how it should be handled. He also outlines some DEF practices occurring that you should never, ever do.
Diesel exhaust fluid is a necessary evil, but also a costly one if you don’t know what you’re doing - or think you know when you really don’t.
Treating your diesel exhaust fluid with care should prevent many of the aftertreatment problems associated with construction equipment. But DEF is often mishandled, which can lead to major, costly problem for your machines.
This short look at DEF - with no jargon or boring technical details - won’t take much of your time, but it could save you thousands of dollars. New operators will especially benefit not only from Bryan’s recommendations but from the quick overview of why and how DEF is so important to equipment.
Veteran operators will also benefit from this quick reminder. They might also find that DEF practices they have been following are doing more harm than good - and one method of dealing with low DEF is just downright ridiculous.
So don’t let bad DEF practices gum up your machines and lead to expensive, unexpected repairs. Learn the proper way to handle this vital fluid in just a few short minutes by watching the latest episode of our weekly video series, The Dirt.

Spot on story! As s thirty year tech, I have seen bad DEF put in machines just as you described. Cost them two or three days down time before we could get to them only to have them drain all the DEF tanks and fill it with new DEF. One customer had a large storage tank on their lube truck that sat on the yard for six months. When they returned to work, they topped of all the machines and within the first three hours, half their fleet was shut down due to DEF quality sensors reporting bad DEF.
Also, the Tier 4 final versions (with DEF) have higher cylinder temps making less soot, over the Tier 4 Interim engines (DPF only) and some have the EGR systems removed due to using DEF for after treatment.
DPF engines ran colder cylinder temps with the EGR mix of air to reduce NOx emissions. Now the SCR and DEF perform this function.

Ive sometimes seen lots of white crystals forming inside and blocking the DPF, is this caused by some problem with DEF fluid ?

Very great information. Did NOT know that about storage. I know companies that buy this in bulk. Do NOT check it. I wonder if a guy, if worries about failure of his PEE test, he might think of using DEF instead of his PEE, full of Legal POT, but has a CDL. Wants to pass his PEE test. Just saying if a guy is stupid enough to think his PEE can pass in a filtering system in a expensive piece of equipment, then he might be stupid enough to think DEF will help him pass his PEE test. HA,HA, who would think PEE could work, are body waste is NOT the same as treatment for a modern Diesel Engine. Maybe with a Lot of METH in your PEE, after all METH is made from Dangerous chemical, that should never ever go into a body, just like your PEE should never go in the after treatment of you Expensive Modern Diesel's. Your video has really opened my eyes to what idiot construction guys might do. Just WOW, Pee my gosh, guess it's the same as I use to watch Laborers doing main line sewers eat lunch in man Holes. That was late 70s, did a lot of main line sewers back then. The Laborers would joke about eating Lunch in man Holes.

C'mon now boogerfarmer! I think I make a fine replacement (I secretly miss the smooth vocal tones of Wayne as well. He does nice work).

Practice common sense! And learn a little about basic chemistry.

Pee = DEF....just don't forget your lab coat and safety glasses when you're peeing in the tank!
