  • Mercedes 480bhp C63 AMG coupe, with optional power upgrade, already has more than enough power to trouble its rear tyres. What happens when you remove some of that grip? Good things, that's what.

    • @ndinadis
      @ndinadis 10 лет назад +13

      yeah its still underpowered, most drifts are clutch cick initiated or ebrake, it cant just power on and overwhelm the tires like you would want it too.
      My cousin bought one, I bought a mustang and modified it, they are very different when it comes to drifts

    • @bazzie85
      @bazzie85 10 лет назад +48

      ndinadis then your cousin doesn't know how to drift. The GT86 can easily maintain a drift all the way through a corner. But you have to floor it all the way and not start off slow in the corner. I tried it last year, a very nice car to drive. Obviously it doesn't have a lot of straight line speed, but who needs that on public roads anyway?

    • @mazin2892
      @mazin2892 8 лет назад +5

      +ndinadis
      you have got a point, the drifts in the mx5/brz aren't 'power-initiated'
      it would be nice if they had slightly more power, at least 250bhp.

    • @ndinadis
      @ndinadis 8 лет назад +1

      I drove his, it had headers and full exhaust, Im assuming intake and tuning, It prob made ok power but the lack of torque was disappointing for me in a "sports car" the stock prius tires I think made it easy to slide around.

      +João Soares To be fair, the section width is measured from widest part of the tire and unlike the standard 255 which has a flat sidewall, the 125 has a rounded side wall so the tread is actually narrower than 125mm. It probably is close to about 1/3 the amount of surface area of the stock tires even though his math was way off.

      Fading Light Not really, flying an aircraft is very complicated

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 9 лет назад +1

      Quentin Freeman Complicated... Depends. Yes, there's some complexity in operating an aircraft, but there's some complexity in driving through London or New York or Sydney too. There's some complexity in operating a motorbike. I rode them for 40 years and I still have an R6 race bike. Complexity is part of the problem, time constraints is another, task management and prioritisation is another. Being able to ignore you instincts and trust your instruments, is a huge one. Being able to correctly read and interpret those instruments, under pressure, is another. Aircraft can be hard, but you have generally got a few moments to think. A car or motorbike near the limit of performance & control, it has to be reflex. It does everything too quickly for you to think about, it has to be like standing on one leg - you have to just KNOW what to do. There can be situations like that in aircraft too, but you don't often get into them.

    I can't believe I only just found this vid, it's instantly one of my favorites. I've spent most of my hooning life extolling the virtues of cheap skinny tires to friends. And it's been a very unpopular theory. But there is simply no better way to make a car "feel" like it has more power. And it's even safer because its way easier to gather things up at the lower speed where your tires let go. Really great tires still let go, just at much higher speeds.

    The reason the GT86/BRZ is touted as such a fun car. The most fun car I ever had was a little peugeot 106 rallye. 1.3litre 8v engine with just over 100bhp and 175tyres, 900kg, no power steering, no safety features. Steering on the throttle, yes, drifting on four wheels, yup. 0-60 took a staggering 9.2 seconds, and you had to work the thing to go anywhere fast, the power band came in at 5000 up to the 7200rpm redline. Load does increase traction to a certain point but after that it only takes away. The wings are used for higher speeds where tires start to lift off the road. The downforce is used to keep the vehicle planted on the ground and handle better more than have less wheel spin at the start. Wings will actually decrease a vehicle's top speed (due to drag) but increase stability at speed. Handling does rely on more factors than just tire grip, however, the weight affects every one of those factors.

    Am I the only one that noticed that they changed SO MANY variables? The wide tires, they left traction control and auto shifting on, with the donuts they turned off traction control and manually shifted.. Although it looks much cooler this way, it throws out the equality of comparison. I'd much rather see the comparison with the tires being the ONLY changed variable. That ruins this entire video for me, tbh.

    This is why I love driving on slippery winter roads with studded tires. Grip may be low, but traction is consistent and weight transfer effects are negligible. The car constantly moves around beneath me in a predictable manner. Effortless at-the-limit driving (when not held up by slow traffic) at legal or near-legal speeds.

    explains the fun of the toyota 86 - which runs on prius tires.
    Actually, if you reduce the width of the tire you don't reduce the grip at anything like the same rate. The more narrow the tire, the more lbs per square inch. The higher the weight per sq inch, the more grip per sq inch. There are other factors too, but a wider tire doesn't add grip through simple increase in contact patch.

  • @llavero5
    @llavero5 8 лет назад +3

    Really the conclusión in this video is 90% wrong, because the compund of the tires is very diferent between stock tire (continental sport contact 5) and the little skinny.
    Try high performance semislick motorbike tire, and you will see results very near to the stock big tires.
    Add the factor that the skinnys can be crystallized for long time without use.
    Grip is 90% load + compund, theoretically 100%, but in extreme load the size can affect a little, but ONLY A LITTLE.
    People who think: "more contact area = more grip" is usually wrong.
    +1 contact area = +1 load = same grip, like i said only theorically, the proportion is like +1 load area = around +0,9 grip.
    Anyway, very fun video!

  • @snowrocket
    @snowrocket 11 лет назад

    I've said as much for years because it's just logical; to enjoy the chassis dynamics themselves, you either increase power or decrease grip. It's why everyone worldwide has so much fun playing in the snow with their cars. With less overall grip you can slide anything at will. The obvious downside is that less grip also means less safety at a given speed for any emergency.

    width might be half and yes spacer savers have much less grip, but what do you mean that area contacting ground is much smaller than half of the 255? space savers has much less grooves and tires width doesn't change contact areas "length". Wheel is wheel, no matter how wide it is, but because rubber is soft so basically car weight puts more pressure on tire with smaller contact area and it should press down more, creating more contact area length. Yes they compensate that with high air pressures

    Width of the tire might be half, but the area with which it sits on the ground is much smaller, and space savers have nowhere near as much grip as the normal road tire, so 1/3 of grip is quite accurate.

  • @Veeteepee
    @Veeteepee 12 лет назад

    @BooglesMcGee Yes, you are absolutely right about the experiment not being adequate to compare the results between regular tires and the spares, but I don't see it as important really. It's clear that you have less traction with skinny tires and the car will oversteer a lot more, hence be more fun. Or as James May would put it, the cars limits will be reached earlier. The important bit in this test is that the car IS actually driveable on these tires.

    Correct, this car in the wet would have performed the same with the normal tires fitted and traction control off. It would have made a huge difference in the dry though. Maybe they planned the test for dry weather conditions but their "track" reservations fell on a rainy one?
    Most disappointing is that we were not shown the tires after this thrashing!

    The theory is in terms of weight per square inch making a difference, but in actuallity it wouldn't work like that Re: grip levels.
    You'd overload the smaller tyre at a far lower speeds than the wider tyre.
    More weight on a tyre will give it more grip, but only up to a certain point. Beyond that point the tyre becomes over loaded and loses grip.

    You are fooled here! Fr = μN ! Which means, the friction force is independent from the size of the tires (in the theory:A) ! If you are more like a practical person, just imagine: would it be easier to pull a brick, just because it is in a upright position?

    I remember an episode of Top Gear where James May was saying it was more fun to drive all out in a 2cyl Fiat Panda vs a supercar going 1/20 of it's limits. I agree with that actually. This and the GT86 proves my point even further; a conventional car being pushed to the limit is great fun; and it won't get you on the wrong side of the law as easily.
    In case of speculators, yes: The GT86 runs on the same rubber size as the Prius that was being sold right beside it.
