I don't know the exact condition in real life operation among airlines, but it's kinda rare to see raw data departure videos on youtube. Love it, mate! 👍
I am now retired. I was a commercial flight instructor / flight examiner attached to a large pilot training organisation. We trained crew who went on to fly for major airlines all over the globe. I occasionally watch videos similar to this and wonder if the guy or girl at the controls was one of my young hopeful students or flight test candidate, ten or more years ago.
I remember your you tube of your being temporary based at Lansing Michigan my city all my life. Please come back and make in my opinion more of you best.Thank you for your hard work in making them and making me proud of our city and state.
Very cool! I didn't know you also flew the 787 Dreamliner. Man, you are a Boeing Man for sure...lol Good to see a new video from you PilotMax. Take care and be safe! Thanks for the videos and keep them coming! We love them!

Hi, can you explain how the HUD works? At 3:32 I see over your head something like a projector? Does this box bring the picture to the HUD glas or is the HUD glas a display by itself? Thank you.
I like both equally. It's a totally different way of working. I'm glad I can do both at the same time :) If I'd have to chose for one full time it really would be a difficult choice :O
@@pilotmax you’re allowed to have a dual type rating at the same time? I thought you could have multiple type ratings but only able to fly one at a time. Is it because the max and Dreamliner have similar cockpits?
What's the typical pitch you aim to maintain on the B787 after rotation, on other aircraft it's 15-20 degrees nose up but looks significantly less on the 787s, is there a reason for this also?
I don't know whether the 787 is underpowered or the takeoffs are highly de-rated but I always see 787s climbing much more slowly after takeoff than the narrowbodies such as 737 or a320.
@@xentroide It's derated. The purpose is to reduce engine wear, thus reducing maintenance problems, reduced chance of engine failure and prolonged engine life.
You are rarely commented, thanks for these videos of a rare quality! I do not know if this is normally normal to avoid the authorization of the cockpit film during decoupling / landing, see the instruments, but in all cases it is superfluous to avoid the possibility of failure
I have 737 747 787type rating but my company allowed to fly just one type acft due to it can make pilot confuse,,, it’s strange and interesting nice video
It's unfair to compare as the 787 is a much more modern design. However it does have its drawbacks too. The 787 is so complex and full of software, the 737 is a basic design and I feel like I know how it works, compared to the 787. To fly both are equally fun :) For comfort however, the 787 wins hands down ! So much more space and so quiet :)
@@pilotmax Interesting! And what cockpit do you prefer? Regardless of the comfort and the loudness. I mean system wise and flight control wise as well as handling wise.
You know what I find scary about this? That modern day pilots depend more on Marconi than they do on Bernoulli. Captain 737/757, (21000+hrs of mostly, good old school stick & rudder)
8:06 does the 787 have an emergency chute that deploys out the back? 🤣 After rotation you see there is not much runway left to make a safe stop in case of aborted takeoff just before V1.
It seems it was enough runway to stop at V1 speed. Automatic rejected take off brakes are very powerfull... About runway left after VR and while taking off... It doesn't matter, continuing is the only option after VR... V1 speed is calculated according to runway lenght, actual conditions, weather, aircraft configuration etc. It must be possibile to stop the aircraft at V1 everytime.
Thanks ! :) I turned them off to do some manual flying. It's fun and it's to stay proficient. Taking off without them is not a good idea on the 787, in case of engine failure. That's why I took off with them ON and then later asked to turn them off ;) Hope that makes sense
Yes on this departure I wanted to fly a bit raw data without flight director. However, taking off without flight directors is not a good idea on the 787 in case of engine failure. Once airborn there's no problem anymore and that's when I ask to switch them off ;)
@@pilotmax I also spotted this, and never seen take off without FD, and have never done this in msfs :) I thought it is only done while performing visual approach.
“Flight Directors off” on takeoff, shortly after departure, with your HUD (heads-up-display, clear glass in front of pilots sight) still down! What an incredible misuse of today’s modern technologies. I am a 787 Capt for a major US airline. 40 years of aviation experience tells me that this act of a “professional” pilot does not align with today’s SOPs. If you want to “feel the need for speed”, don’t put your HUD down! Fly your aircraft as you’d like without the HUD. That is fine. However, if you want the absolute, most efficient, safest, manufacturer’s and company’s best practices available to you, use the HUD. Maverick would be proud, but he never flew an airliner!
Interesting to not that everything the pilot does, with a little tweaking of the systems, could be dozen by ATC from the control tower. One day that is the way it will be done.
I hate when airlines make captains put their hands on the throttle until V1! My flight control means my flight control! If were pilot flying I’d keep my hands on the throttle all the time, even after V1! It just doesn’t make sense to me.
This rule is not from the airlines. But from boeing themselves. The captain is the one who decides to interrupt the take off or not. So it makes sense .

I didn't know I could fly two planes at the same time! That's awesome!
In Europe you can legaly fly two types in commercial operation (use of two type ratings commercally).
Have you ever thought about getting type rated to fly the Triple 7 so you can fly the new 777-X ?
