    Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
    The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.
    Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerizing score along with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects, magically combine to bring this tragic love story to life each night.

    Just horrendous. An insult to Phantom fans worldwide. Lloyd Webber repeatedly promised that the original production would return unchanged and in its entirety (his words). Then instead we get lumbered with a pale, reduced imitation. Gone is the proscenium that Hal Prince considered crucial. Gone is the Angel, Maria Björnson's favourite set piece. Gone are half the orchestra. Gone are half of the candles in the boat scene and the moving candelabra that made it so magical. Even the dry ice is skimped on so we no longer get the illusion of a lake. The costumes have been cheapened. Cost-cutting is evident everywhere. We also get a horrendously cheap-looking new flat instead of the gorgeous red curtain to look at during the interval and playout (which now sounds lame as hell with only 14 musicians). The Really Useful Group and Cameron Mackintosh have done this solely to line their pockets. Royalties no longer have to be paid to the original creatives and the original investors have been cut out. Anyone who considers this 'the best ever' or even buys the BS that this is an 'enhanced' version of the original needs their heads examining.

    • @blissinchains

      And they've hired a talentless hack for Christine based on current social politics to make money--along with removing seats to sell them for more money. Their phnatom sounds like he should be in a boydband, and...all this crap is coming to Broadway by mid January. I suspect their operatic (white) Christine is not leaving on her own terms. On top of that, they've somehow kept that same horrid phantom they've had for at least five years when he can't sing music of the Night without looking like he's constipated, he strains so hard--and can't even reach the right notes.

      @@Youokhun Presumably you never saw the bigger and better original production. You would only think this one is amazing if you had never seen it before. • @christinedaae3235
    @christinedaae3235 3 года назад +7

    I really can't understand why people bring race at the first place saying Lucy "is the only one real Christine" because she's black... When she simply can't handle the role. When I first heard her it hurt my hearing. She has problems with vibrato - and serious ones, the voice should not tremble on every vowel, this interferes with the understanding of words in songs, and also breaks the voice. Vibrato is a loose vocal cords. And she sounds like she's croaking, sorry for the comparison.
    In addition, this role implies academic performance - and Lucy sounds very flat, there is no feeling that she is an opera singer, there is no volume in her voice.
    They could make Holly, who copes with the role much better and has a voice
    as principal Christine, and Lucy an understudy, and then she would have trained. But no... they didn't, because of the race. So she kills the voice.
    I also don't understand, they took a black actress for the role of Christine, made her a principal, made her a special wig. But blonde actresses should play with a dark wig when they could be given a wig of their hair color, and sometimes there would be real Christines - like Gaston Leroux's, otherwise it's somehow unfair. Blondes appear only in nonreplicas, and Emmi Christensson was many many years ago, and then as an understudy.

    • @blissinchains
      @blissinchains 2 года назад

      Christine is a Swede. Meant to be fair-haired, blue-eyed and in need of a good pair of spectacles because she couldn't read without them. She's not an immigrant to Sweden from Nigeria. That would be an entirely different story, because her father would have told her completely different stories--and that's just a start. We can just try and ignore what cultural and societal normas and attitudes were toward black people at the time, even in France, but there is no way she would ever be hired at an opera house to do more than cleaning. That's truly not a good thing, but that was 1880s France--and 1880s Western Countries for the most part. Ignoring that is shameful and does a disservice to the struggles of actual people of colour who lived back then.
      But she's black in the age of BLM, so nobody cares if it makes sense, or if she can sing. All that matters is that she and the lady on broadway are black. And if you listen to them much more, they'll want the entire cast replaced with black actors, crew and orchestra. Race is all that matters to these people.
      Lucy can't sing. (Emilie on Broadway is better, buuut...still, no.) She's not had the classical training necessary for this role. If you compare her to her predecessors, Kelly Mathieson or Amy Manford...well, there is NO comparison. They blow her out of the water because they were hired for talent, not race.
      Lucy and Emilie were hired to make money from BLM theatregoers. That's it. They've cheapened everything else, ruined the blocking of several numbers, changed the tempo and lyrics to pander to a black Christine, and the special wigs which tbh should have been done up in the same corscrew curls as the other Christines, because black women did curl their hair that way too--it's all to pander to the "woke" crowd and make money. But in doing so, they've abandoned their longterm fans who are often repeat goers.
      With how cheap the shows are now, I hope they close. Woke politics have ruined the arts.

      The 2020 cast was leagues better. Their Phantom was literally an operatic tenor; Kelly Mathieson had operatic training, and would've been replaced last September, but she still had some 6 months left. Their Carlotta was INCREDIBLE. Love Britt Lenting. And they had the best looking (and sounding!) Piangi I've ever seen. Now Australia has at least half of the above mentioned actors. Their gain, London's loss.
      And they fired actors, swings who'd been there 30+ years with the company and same with their musicians. Why would anyone want to work for these people? Cameron mackintosh has proven thoroughly he doesn't give a flip about firing anyone on a whim. Even the first black Christine.

      Not from anyone who just went and saw nothing beyond "the first black Christine AAAA!!!11" The cast they had pre-Covid was superb and the best they'd had in a decade at least. And they were fired over Zoom by an employee of RUG. Cameron couldn't even be bothered to do it.

    Meh. Get your original set back. Including the angel and full proscenium. Get back the expensive, gorgeous costumes that don't look like they're made of ployester. Hire back those 13 musicians you canned for no reason. Hire back the crew you laid off for no reason. Apolgize to the 2020 cast for firing them and not allowing them to continue to fulfill their contracts when restrictions ease. And to the audience for having to pay more for a cheapened version of what WAS a msgnificent show. The current cast is lacklustre, in terms of talent. Your Raoul is the only standout for me, so earnest and expressive. Otherwise... I'll head to Broadway to see the show as Hal Prince imagined it.

      As great as the original set was, it was tearing the building apart around it. There's reasons for some of these decisions - can't speak to all.

      Bore off. The original sets were crumbling and needed replacing anyway. I saw the original 26 times and loved it and I have seen this revamped version twice and love it just as much.

    • @blissinchains
      @blissinchains 3 года назад

      @@SamLloydPresents Nah. It's ugly, it sounds terrible and fake with not even half the previous orchestra and the costumes look cheaaaaap. Not to mention the cast doesn't have a quarter of the talent of the cast they fired without recourse in 2020. That had been their best cast in a decade or more. Sorry, but this show's as good as done for. Broadway is where it's at. Because they actually protect their employees with a union. :)

      @@blissinchains I disagree but we’re all entitled to our opinion. Most shows change throughout their life span. Les Mis has had major set and orchestra reductions too but people still flock to see it. I get a lot of enjoyment from watching Phantom in London and will continue to see it as often as I can. I think it’s still wonderful.

      He was fired and not asked back. The way the former cast and crew were all treated is disgusting. I'm not sure how anyone can salivate over this. Let Cammack go broke, the way he callously thinks the members of his orchestras should instead of providing them with stable, longterm jobs.

    Just saw the show tonight and while it was very good I must say the cast from 2019 was far stronger. I specifically think Carlotta fell short and really didn't nail the highs if Prima Donna. Phantom was good in parts but lacked some of the acting chops and didn't have that a strong erotic chemistry with Christine

    • @blissinchains
      @blissinchains 2 года назад +2

      Josh Piterman, Kelly Mathieson (Bridget Costello, Amy Manford, Corinne Cowling), Paul Tabone, Britt Lenting, et al were the best cast that show's had in the past decade at least. What's currently there and is cheap trash. Broadway is a bit better, but they need a decent Phantom and to keep their operatic Christine longer. Just sucks that politics are determining casting.
