Back to school: Muslim girls battle France’s new abaya ban | The Take

- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- French students returned to class facing yet another battle over what some Muslim girls are choosing to wear. This time it’s the abaya, a long loose-fitting dress. Dozens of students were sent home after nearly 300 showed up to the first day of classes in abayas. French women have been here for a while now: head coverings, including the hijab, were first banned in public schools back in 2004. So how will this latest ban impact Muslim students and communities today?

Did these people not know the culture of these countries when they moved thier entire families there and I'm south Asian myself
so i am guessing when moving to another country, countries should say dont bring your religion, dont bring your culture, we are going to treat you as an outsider but dont act like an outsider.😋
Interesting how people see them as foreigners or migrants when the vast majority of them are indeed French with French parents. Plus many of those families (their grand parents...) were brought in by France when France needed to increase their labor class. People really don't know anything about France....They chose to wear a dress that culturally happens to be worn mainly in Arabic countries. French law allows tradition or cultural outfit in schools by law. If it was already forbidden, a new text/"law to come" would not be needed. And since that Text does not even respect the French version of Laïcité and French Constitution it's going to be overturned by the Law just like it was done for the Text regarding the burkini not too long agi This topic is just a waste of time and money for all French citizens.

I find it horrifically ironic that countless schools across Europe are sending girls home and modifying their uniforms because short skirts and tight trousers are distracting, and France here is doing the exact opposite.
They are not Distracting if you're not Mentally ill or for normal people.
Control your Horniness, They are Humans,
not sexual objects which you need to cover every inch of the body.
What a useless debate... France has 5 millions pupils... 300 pupils wear the abaya... Is that a threat? Schools are ruined, short of teachers, parents are struggling with money... And the most important problem is the abaya. How to distract the population. However, the more you will tell people they can't do something, the more they will do it.
Rules are meant to be obeyed, threat or no threat. If you are not pleased move to Afghanistan where you can show you culture freely.
I’m an atheist, and I think this is so very wrong. The clothes that people wear are part of their cultural identity. I don’t want to live in a world where the government dictates what we wear, either in a you must or you must not fashion. It seems overtly cruel to these people and the ones who are cheerleading it sure do seem to come across as racist or worse. These are children they can’t just up and leave, they fled their homes in a lot of cases because they were getting murdered by their former governments telling them to go home is needlessly cruel as well. Everyone should feel free to express themselves in their authentic way, the only restriction being that your expression stops when it infringes on other peoples. This is a very dangerous road to head down and when the next cultural dress is banned will we let that slide as well.

It's not true that Western clothes are always short. Every culture has long dresses and some westerners actually prefer those. Would it be right to force them to wear short dresses just to prove a point to a few female students? Or does this law apply only to racial minorities?
Pretty sure our rules say a young girl should not be forced by police and teachers to reveal more skin than she is comfortable with, unless you live in an intolerant right wing state that victimizes women and girls to terrorise their community.

The Islamic woman and girls of France don't have to fight the government decree against religious head covrrnings, they can simply dress in customary French female attire from the late 1900 which covered the body and was customary to have a head coverning. Not religious
Everyone should wear what they want!!
Or not wear anything at all like nudists.
If you don't like it move out of France 🤷
An Abaya is an Arab dress. It’s not religious it’s cultural. So this is essentially a racist attack on another cultures dress. Muslimmwomen can wear any long dresses to cover their bodies but this law stops them from wearing any kind of long dress if they’re Muslim
I agree That’s like saying if someone comes to Germany from France they can’t speak French or do anything remotely french
I'm not sure why this is such a problem. Even if they are not Muslim, certain Islamic countries mandate women and girls to wear hijab.
Women in Iran and Afghanistan, for example, are required to wear a hijab regardless of reason.
