I have always liked the looks of many recurve blades and never buy them because of fear of sharping. You made this look very simple. Thank you. Off to buy a recurve blade now.
Excellent explanation on how to sharpen a recurve. I really like recurves and blades with big bellies. Great way to show that recurves are not to be feared. Thank you for doing this. Have a great day.
Inherited ceramic and Arkansas rods from my father in law over 16 yrs ago. They were given to me because since I could walk I was a knife lover and sharpener. Didn't take me long to realize the benefits of a rod and the ease of sharpening recurves with them. There were a couple ultra fine in his kit that became my only go to for finishing and honing. Primarily free handing most of my life I have always held them just like I would a pocket stone. I've bought some longer ones in the last few yrs that I keep in the kitchen drawer for larger knives but I used 4-5" rods for yrs to hone knives like my esse6 and even my rtakll. I have the blur in s30v and they work great on it as well, takes a few extra strokes with that steel but that's the trade off and honestly it's not that much. BTW people who want an edge other than 20 or 25° it's not rocket science, drill bit, protractor or angle cube, and a block of wood and you can have any angle you want. Or buy/make some angle wedges or ramps and use your imagination. Nice video enjoyed watching
Thank you for taking to time to make such and informative and amazing video on how simple it can be to sharpen a recurve blade and that you don't need to put a whole lot of effort into it and can be quick and easy
Thanks for reminding me. I have an old set of ceramic rods (medium and fine) with wooden base and storage pouch that I've had for 35-38 years. These put a super edge on a blade. Now all I have to do is remember where I put them. lol. Enjoy your day and a cup o' tea. P.S. I found them and they're Crock Sticks!
Every time I see somebody deliberately dull their knife for a demonstration, it makes me cringe, LOL. Good video Paddy. There are so many people afraid to buy a recurve. I use a ceramic rod and just stay on top of it, but it really is that easy as you have just proven. You can even put a pretty decent polish on your edge if that's your thing. You just need the right progression of strops.
You're right, you just have to stay on top of them. I've only got 2 left in my collection - I'm sort of glad the whole recurve fad is fading just a bit. For a while, every knife coming out was a recurve!
I have a couple of recurved fixed blades (Spanish Muela). for stropping I use a 3/4" wide strip of leather glued to a 3/4" wide batten. That's narrow enough to allow for the irregularity of the blade.
Lansky box is really good, recurve or not, probably the easiest thing to get shaving sharp edge. You can also try Ikea Flaksa. Harder to keep angle, but it is decent ceramic rod for just around 8 dollars.
It does on my ZT 0350 with the S30V blade. Elmax is even harder steel. Just be very sure to keep the angle at 20-22 deg for these blades. Keep wrist "LOCKED" and heed how Paddy here moves the recurve over the stone. Muscle memory counts with this. I use nothing more than a $30 WorkSharp WSGFS using only the fine stones unless the edge is really dinged up needing the courser stones... carefully until you know what you're doing. But I'm not cutting barbed wire with the 0350. You can practice on a cheap knife. It also has 20 deg. guides on both ends. The strop on the WSGFS works great especially with green honing compound containing chromium and aluminum oxides rubbed into the leather. I can work this S30V blade edge sharp enough to read text off it under light if you really need it that sharp.
NO NO NO..I will not buy a recurve, I'm still scared of them Paddy. Honestly though it would have to be a really nice knife for me even to consider a recurve. Now show us serrated and Tanto blade sharpening and you will have covered all the " NO FUN" type knives to sharpen. ATB Paul
The problem with this (I own one) is that the sharpening striations are going to be east-west instead of north-south, and thus not at all in the direction of cutting. I was shown the error of my ways. In KME/Sharpmaker/Lansky systems (in which the blade is held still while the sharpener moves in a north-south direction, thus putting the striations in the proper direction. However, for recurve blades the flat stones are not able to sharpen all parts of the edge. For this there are semicircular stones which do the proper job.
I appreciate you pointing this out, but im satisfied with a shaving sharp edge, i dont tend to worry about the more technical aspects of sharpening. I can understand why people do and really enjoy seeing a proper mirror polish. I think im to lazy lol. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️

I just got a Kershaw Blur and I've been searching for a video showing one being sharpened on a stand-up rod sharpener. Thank you!

You are the only other person I know of that listens for the paper. Nice tip man!
Good job with this Paddy. And it's great learning from a fellow Mic too!!
Fantastic demonstration on the simplicity of sharpening your knife! I’m definitely getting one of these Lansky systems.
I really enjoyed this demonstration Paddy, you did show the simplictify of the proceedure very well.
Thank you appreciate your feedback. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
Love your sharpening videos! Thanks again Paddy!

Sweet seeing you demonstrate this! Very helpful!
Thanks zach glad you enjoyed. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
That's a cool lil set man.
very good...I attached a piece of leather to a 1" wooden dowel for my recurve strop...have a great week...
Thanks mate im going to do that. Great tip. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
O that noise again ,never had that sharpening system ,I suppose I never had a recurve blade ! You certainly make it look simple ,good job .ATB Dave
Thank you you sensitive old soul. Lol. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️

Im with you Tim you can go as far as you like and you dont need to spend big. Although i would love a K. M. E. Not happening yet. Lol. Atb paddy 😊👍☘️
I’ve had one of these for a while. It’s so much quicker and easier than getting the fixed angle Lansky out, especially for longer kitchen knives.
Im with you sir. Get it sharp quickly and easily thats my goal. Most of the time. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
As per usual good job!
As per usual a kind word. Atb paddy 👍☘️😊🙏

Thanks for the input chris, someone else just said they use a dowel. It's my next try. Atb paddy 😊👍☘️
@@paddyspotatopeelers2154 Yes broom handle with leather stuck to it works.
Good tip there. Doesn't take much recurve to be almost impossible to sharpen on a flat stone.
Yes mate i tried on the corners, im just not good enough yet. Atb paddy 😊👍☘️
Good Vid Paddy. Ta
Lansky is nice. I compared stick angles with a protractor one was off 10° no problem just adjusted angles. Quality ceramics.
Good tip ill try that and let you know James. Atb paddy 👍😊☘️
Good one Paddy.

Hi Paddy, Yesterday got my HH red Spyderco UKPK. Gave it a stop. Anyone need a bit of surgery? lol.
Lol Jeff they are great little knives. I really dont see the need for a light weight para 3 now. Atb paddy 👍☘️😊
