$0.70 Noodles with the Villagers in Sumatra, Indonesia 🇮🇩

- After 3 hours of riding my scooter around the Samosir region I took a break in a tiny village to enjoy some of the local food.
The village is called Harian Boho (or also Turpuk Malau, according to Google Maps). It's near Lake Toba outside of Samosir Island.
The locals were very welcoming to a white man holding a camera and gave me a lot of smiles and banter. One lady spoke some English and was very helpful in helping me interact with the food vendors. She even acted as camera woman as I ate my delicious noodles drenched in spicy peanut sauce.
I passed this village on my way to Bukit Holbung. Reaching and hiking up that mountain will be the adventure you'll see in my next video.

That man looks like a proud father watching his boy eating. 😂
I felt that too haha

He is pretty concerned watching Dale eating his food unmixed and he keeps telling others to tell Dale to mix the sauce with the vermiceli

I'm always amazed by your extroverted, outgoing social skills, and the personal exchanges you explore with people you've never met. Your humor, your genuine curiosity about others, your handsome features, and kindness is impressive. You have a natural gift of creating something majestic to watch whether of the natives, the landscape or your journey among them. Many of us will never see these parts of the world so it's a unique perspective to view it through your expression and camera. Thanks for the experience Dale. I wish you continued and many safe travels.
Agree 100% with Linward. You have an amazing attitude and characters, Dale. And your adventurous explorations about the places are not done by anyone else before, I think. And that's what we like to watch really, because you are bringing us, the video watchers, really going together with you. That's amazing. I heard that the King of the Netherlands with his royal family is planning to come to see Danau Toba in a few weeks or months. I hope they stay long in Danau/Lake Toba. And I hope they watch your videos before they are coming to Lake Toba :-).

Dale is really down to earth personality. What a human begin man you're . You're my inspiration ❤️
and basically he's generous 🙂.
He kindly offer everyone to eat before he try one, and that will 'keep him safe' whether he realize it or not 🧏🏻♂️
Samosir is my hometown. Trust me, they are only innocent people. If they suddenly "asking" for money or something, that's a joke. They just repeat words they know. Local only know a few english words like Yes, No, Thanks, Welcome, and money(usually for transaction).
Don't worry, locals are very honest too (majority). There is a motto: Treat a guest like a king, that's why you found them so friendly.

The mother wants to say Rp.1000 for the banana but she doesn't know how to say Rp1000 so she say 100 😂 they're giving you local prices.
Maybe the people don't know your language, sir, but it seems that the people there warmly welcome you. I like the hospitality of the people 🤗
Hi Dale. I watch your videos a lot. it was so amazing. Thank you for visiting Indonesia. Anyway, I saw you struggling a few times and ended up being misunderstood while trying to communicate with the locals. Here are some sentences that you can use at least to fulfill your main needs. Hopefully it will make it easier for you when you come back to Indonesia
If you looking some place to eat, just say : saya mau beli makan
If you ask for the price : harga berapa?
If you ask for direction : kemana or lewat mana? For example you wanna go to bukit holbung, you can say "bukit holbung lewat mana?"
If you ask for the distance : berapa jauh?
Fork : garpu
Spoon : sendok
No ice : tidak es
Ask for the cold one : dingin ada?
These sentences do not comply with the Indonesian spelling rules. but they will understand what you're trying to say
I like how comfortable they are around you.

Oh man that girl she's what we Tobans say "Bunga Desa" literal translation of village flower. The playful old lady is aware of this, cracks a joke that's common for local taste when she said "I love you" referring to the Bunga Desa and the handsome bachelor just so the girl would blush (apparently job accomplished ). I'm actually single, I wonder if you could arrange introducing me to the girl somehow, maybe she's one of your subscribers, I won't hold my breath though haha. I'm glad you get the old lady was just messing with you when she asks you for money, it's very local taste to mess with people a "wee" whom they find endearing.

In 6:30 another mistranslation then a misunderstanding, Dale, about the price of the banana. They said actually "Seribu Rupiah satu" which means Rp1000/each. But they did not say it in English correctly, which is supposed to be "one thousand", the "mi pecal" (pecal/gado-gado noodle) lady instead said, "one hundred" =100 and the young pretty lady (her daughter) said, "ten thousand" = 10 000 (her English is quite good) because certainly, she thought you want to buy 10 pieces because impossible in her mind that you would buy only 1 piece = Rp. 1000. No one buys only 1 piece of fried banana since it's already very cheap. Therefore when you thought you bargained to 5000 (to receive 1 piece of banana) actually the fried banana lady was preparing 5 pieces of fried banana (5 x Rp.1000). Confusing even more, because the other cheeky "mi bakso" (meatball noodle soup) lady said "7" because she expected you will get 7 bananas instead of 5 bananas and she wanted some of your fried bananas. I am also a Batak and I speak Batak, English and Bahasa Indonesia. Batak ladies are very friendly to tourists. And certainly also to white men (in Indonesia we call white men as "bule" [boo le, "le" like in left]) as it's already well known from long time ago when Samosir Island and Lake Toba were visited by many foreign tourists and ex-pats, who were majority white men ("bule") long before the 1990s. After the Asian Financial crisis and Indonesia political crisis (Reformasi) in 1998 Lake Toba was suddenly dead with tourism. And I think the people in Lake Toba, Samosir and the other surrounding areas are longing to see Lake Toba and North Sumatera generally flourishes again with tourism. As a Batak person, I thank you so much that through your RUclips videos you are helping to promote Danau Toba (Lake Toba) to the world. I also edited and uploaded a video here about Lake Toba that you can check out: ruclips.net/video/LMufnxghlIQ/видео.html
Well, fyi, the rice noodle with peanut sauce and cracker that you eat was actually called as "Ketoprak", you need to eat it along with lontong (boiled rice cake inside banana leaf), cucumber and bean sprouts too!
i thought they said “pecel” and “gado2” at 1:12 so which one is it???
@@Lightnatural oh you're right! I think that was pecel.. I'm sorry I didn't hear that.. Thanks for the information! I just found out that pecel also can use bihun (vermicelli) in it.
@@freesiabluebell1618 ah right, thanks for letting me know as well haha!

We Batak people are very happy to have foreign tourists around...most will treat you well..some ignores you just because they don't understand english.
They keep changing the price because actually, we can buy the "pisang goreng/ fried bananas" as much as we want. I'm Malaysian but Malaysia and Indonesia are like siblings. Hope you can explore more in Indonesia & Malaysia too. If you going here, don't forget to try visiting other states in Malaysia such as Terengganu (try their keropok lekor - like a thick fish chip?), Kelantan (Dodol - some sticky rice), Johor (Mee udang), Selangor (lots of different food) come & visit Malaysia again. There is a lot of local food you haven't tried yet. We have Chinese, Indian, Malay cuisines and if you're going to Sabah Sarawak, there are a lot more types of local food too. Me too haven't tried all
Indonesian people are hospitable, humble and smiling faces if you greet and ask them. Come and enjoy the nature around you see.
