Foreigners attempt strange Indonesian Drink 🇮🇩
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 ноя 2019
- During a road trip from Bukit Luwang to Lake Toba with a bunch of Dutchies we stopped at a roadside cafe. I reached for what I thought was a bottle of tea, but was in fact Badak, a strange Indonesia drink. How did we react to this weird tasting beverage?
The journey, in what is called a "tourist bus" but is actually a shared taxi, cost 230,000 Rupiahs and included a ferry ticket from Parapat to Samosir, the island in the middle of Lake Toba.
I stayed in the Samosir Cottages Resort which has it's own little pier for the boat to pick you up and drop you off with maximum convenience. For one night I paid an average of 685,000 Rupiahs which is pretty high considering there are guest house rooms nearby for 100,000 but felt like having a proper hotel experience after staying in very basic accommodation in Bukit Lawang and Medan.
I will be renting a motorbike / scooter to do some adventure riding and exploring the Lake Toba area thoroughly. Stay tuned for those VLOGS.

BADAK is a kind of Sarsaparilla, actually originally an American drink ;)
There are two well known Sarsaparilla brands from Indonesia; Badak from North Sumatra and Indo Saparella from Special Region of Yogyakarta. Badak was established by a Swiss national named Heinrich Surbeck in 1916 in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra and Indo Saparella was establish ca.1960 in Yogyakarta. Both brands can be found in some local restaurants and stalls.
Sarsaparilla is a soft drink, originally made from the Smilax ornata or other plants, but now sometimes made with artificial ingredients. In most Southeast Asian countries, it is known as sarsi, and there is a Sarsi brand. It is similar in flavour to root beer.

Good vlog Dale, the views from that cafe were amazing. I actually love Calpol. :-) :-)
0:54 Most warungs (street food hawkers) always serves boiling hot beverages. That's why they come with a small plate, you can use it to drip some of the drink from the cup into the plate so it can cool faster, and drink directly from it. It taste better if you drink it directly from the plate than from cup, tbh
You are a really funny one you got jokes keep up with the good videos😂

Hello Dale, Badak is a popular drink here in Medan. Badak is beverage drink brand with sarsaparila (root) flavor. Badak originally from Pematang Siantar area of North Sumatra. Badak was established in 1916 under the name NV Ijs Fabriek Siantar.
I tried it as well when I was in Indonesia in September 2019 when we first arrived.
AND I LOVE IT!!!

Dale Indonesians are very polite and shy. If they do not understand you, they will not say anything and pretend they understand. Like the milo you were served, people never ask for cold, so he automatically thought hot (panas). You just needed to know word dingin (cold). That drink is a type of root beer, but not carbonated. I think it is nasty too. It is more like tea (teh). In a lot of places in Indonesia, you do not have coke or soda, but you can buy a bottle of cold tea (normally very sweet or manis) James (American guy)
Just think in years to come when your old, your be able to look back on your adventures, the places which people dream to visit. 👍
24:19 that's a legendary one 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Apparently Badak is a sarsparilla, so has a similar taste to root beer. That makes 100% sense as most Europeans I've met, and a lot of asians, hate the taste of it.
it's a medicinal drink for deep heat or stamina recovery, of course it will feel strange
You’re funny & cute tho lol love ur accent btw. Keep exploring, Dale.

BADAK drinks is the same as Sarsaparilla or Root Beer. Yes, it's a carbonized drink. 😁
Hope you enjoy your stay in Indonesia. ❤️

The badak is drink soda, that can make you healthy, it's like medicine when you feel hot. The kolonial belanda or dutch first time production in pematang siantar city.
