i actually have so much respect for the tour guide at the Batak museum - he doesn't come across as an expert or an authority figure on those objects, but he's so clearly got such a passion and a deep interest in learning and teaching about the culture and history of the tribe and i think that's wonderful. As a Scot myself, the preservation of such things is such an important thing to cultural my identity... i remember being so excited in primary school when I learned to count to ten in Gaelic. So when the guide explained the Batak alphabet is being taught in their schools, it warmed my heart a little :)
he really came across as a cool guy who's eager to teach about what's on their display
edit: the lady you bought the bracelet from was so fun! what an attractive soul!!!

27:00. This moving statue is a legendary statue from batak just like what the museum man said about the moving statue that in the past they use someone's spirit to move the statue. This statue has a story, actually in the past there was a king and his beloved son, the king truly love his son but sadly his son die in the war and after know that his son die he lives in depression and someone from the kingdom called 'datu' said that what if we made a statue and put your son's soul in to the statue so the king will not be sad again. They used to play the music in the past every night and the son's soul will get in the statue. What you see over there is the original one. Believe it or not batak people is full of mystic, even in the past they were cannibal.
Sorry for my bad English hopefully foreigners from outside who has no idea what the hell is that understand the legendary story behind that statue.

@@10klikeanonimbalikwxc14 I think English is important, as it becomes the international language on this planet (we can't deny the fact tho), making communication way easier. Imagine if we can't understand what others say would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? When we travel abroad and we cannot have even a single basic conversation with others, isn't that frustrating for you? (yes you may have a translator or kind of that, but it will be freer if we are the ones who talk directly to them, it is also wasting time tho). As an additional point, our vision could be enhanced massively since there are tons of English literature and articles. However, it would be great if we can also bring our language to the international level (like anime in Japanese, Korean in Korean entertainment, etc.), so I think both local and international language does important. And about your tourist point. Language is not the only indicator for tourists to decide to go there, there are lots others (safeness, immigration things like visa, infrastructure, access, quality of tourism sector in the area, etc.). But I agree with your point that we should not feel inferior to use, or even just understand them, since the point of language is to communicate, not as a pride or else

Their cultures looks similar too. Dale, you should paid him more than 5K because he gave you so many information and so patient to explain everything hehe..

    Just to clarify....
at 37:13 The seller said Horas meaning as Welcome.
But it was not completely true.
Horas is Batak Greeting, means, May God Blessing Us with His Grace, if you shake hand with others and you said, Horas, and they must be reply also with Horas,
If you will say goodbye to anyone and you wave your hand and say, Horas.
    It means,
May you always get luck, may you get healthy, May you get wealthy. And see you again in positive situations.
It is the same meaning of 'Shalom' greeting in Jews traditions.

Dale, that fruit is probably "Markisa". They also make bottled juice from it (can be bought in many supermarkets). Local tourists consider it as "beverage souvenirs" from Medan.
    .
Those students are member of environmental and adventure activity club. And that scarf is their "club identity".
    .
In Indonesia (specially in urban area) using helmet is mandatory when you ride motorcycle. You can get ticket if police see you riding without helmet.
    .
Anyway you can use Google Translate (and also its Text to Speech feature) to speak with Indonesians, it's quite good.
    .
Awesome video as always Dale. Enjoy the journey. Keep up the good work.
