- The "Chinatown" in any city is a sure bet for finding some delicious food, and the one in Semarang is no exception.
A large section of Semarang's Chinatown is closed off to vehicle traffic every Friday - Sunday evening, and turned into a night market called Pasar Semawis.
This night market was different to what I was expecting. Every other night market I've visited in Asia has been loud, crowded and chaotic. The Semawis market was much more relaxed, with not so many visitors and lots of space in between each stall. The street is very wide and it's comfortable to walk around in peace.
I feel like even if someone was in a wheelchair they could comfortably explore this place, and I can't say that about any other night market I've visited in Asia.
I was in the mood for some satay (grilled meat on sticks) and that was easy to find in this market. Many stalls were selling it. I was attracted to a stall selling sate babi (pork satay) at 6,000 rupiah ($0.40 USD) per stick.
Just as in every Chinatown in Indonesia, pork is easily available here.
There were a few stalls selling Indonesia food but it was mostly different kinds of Asian foods, particularly Japanese.
I enjoyed some Japanese style meat sticks and Japanese soufflé pancakes, as well as a Thai style mango drink/dessert.

Semawis is one of the most relaxed night markets I've visited in Asia. Usually these places are noisy and packed with people, but this place was chill.

I lived in Singapore for years and travelled a lot of Asia before, Im back in the UK now, but love Dales vids reminding me how great that part of the world is. Im moving to New Zealand in a couple of months with my wife and children, definitely be visiting Asia for the holidays! Be safe Dale!

The food vlogs are my favourite. I love seeing all the different food you stumble upon and you always seem to just get on with people and they warm towards you even if the language barrier is there. You're not afraid to go up and ask and just see how it goes. Plus everything is always so cheap, the Scotsman in you must love that 😂. Brilliant video as always.

And this praise worthy trait can even be seen from the young kids which shows the people there are doing the right thing in instilling ethically correct teaching and honest upbringing to their children. I'm so overwhelmed from the interactives and my heart just melted when the young girl offered you the piece of tissue paper for you to wipe off. The kind gesture inself painted a thousand words. This is just so getting incredibly rare to see in other parts of the world especially in developed countries where humans are mostly introverted and even self-centred. Semawis actually used to be a pretty crowded night street market, but since the covid-19 pandemic, they were closed down and only like about half of the tenants actually came back there and restarted the night street market.
If you actually wanted to get best pork satay in Semarang, I recommend you to go to WM Kelengan, which is not that far from the semawis night market.
Didn't know that you were in Semarang, had I known you were there, it would be lovely to be able to meet you there haha

You're so lucky it's quite, Dale! I was there on June 2022 and it was packed! Can't even try the fluffy pancake bcs they were out 😢 I stayed at Capsule Gajahmada, quite decent. We tried Nasi Goreng Babat, es kopyor, corndog, squid, pisang bakar, dorayaki, and many more
