- It's tail time! Gex 4/Gex Jr. recently dropped on the internet and it's time to do a deep dive to find out more about this weird curiosity.
"The Truth About Gex 4 (Gex Jr.)"
In this video we'll be taking a close look at the "Gex Jr." demo that found it's way onto the internet in April 2022. Where did it come from, who made it and why? All your questions will be answered. We'll discuss the intention behind the demo, whether Gex Jr. is Gex's son and whether Gex Jr. can be considered Gex 4.
I'll also run through some of the most significant pieces of recent Gex-related news at the tail-end of the video as well.

When I saw the title I thought it'd be Gex's childhood or his son, but the idea of him being sucked up into a Nick.Jr like channel and turning into Gex Jr is honestly a rather unique concept. There's so much further ideas that can be explored and I'm really hoping we can get more Gex in the future.

I grew up on Gex and I have a lot of nostalgia for the series. I also love how horrendously outdated Gex is and I think if they got a good writer like Ron Gilbert; they could do a post 90's Gex that was both an ironic and unironic love-letter to the decade.
Great idea. A lot of people have championed the idea of a more current Gex centring on the internet age but a game that's an intentional throwback to the '90s would be interesting too.

Gex is watching TV and keeps seeing interviews with Crash and Spyro after their successful Trilogy Remakes on modern consoles.
Gex calls his agent and proposes "Gexcited Trilogy" and it gets green lit; confirmed to be a launch title for a new console (a parody of all the failed kickstarter consoles). However midway through development the console turns out to be a scam and the trilogy is cancelled.
Gex decides to sneak in and steal the source code but accidentally hits a button that causes him to get sucked in (Tron style)
Then the rest of the game is him playing as both himself (old) and the game version of himself (young) in recreations of the original levels but parts of them are broken or been ruined with modern game design (like the snow level is filled with terrible stealth sections etc).
The game would be both a celebration of Gex and simpler times in gaming whilst also being a parody of modern gaming and Gex itself.
So you get to have your cake and eat it too.

This is so exciting! But how I wish we got another Gex game on the PS2 or so. Gex 3 is seriously one of the best looking PS1 games in my opinion, would have been interesting too see how it would have looked on PS2. And imagine even more detailed level design for these various funky level themes!

Honestly, this is pretty comprehensive look into the ‘Gex Jr’ prototype and the revelations behind it. The fact, it could have been lost media and was preserved was just miracle. It’s very cool to hear the insight about the game and the intentions behind the development in video form from Neal Bauer himself. It’s really great video and was a pleasure to watch. Also, thanks for the shoutout too. It’s greatly appreciated that you made a video on this topic and sharing informative Gex content with the general public. I don't think they should redesign Gex as I feel like his look just fits his personality perfectly. Maybe if they do redesign him draw him in a 2D styled 3D way like with the Peanuts movie ect. Or the different worlds he goes to could change what art style he is drawline in.
Agreed. I think the Sushee Games re-design was a step too far away from his original look.
@@JohnnyVector Ya, plus it would be cool for the model for the renders as a playable thing. It would be pretty neat though if they like referenced the fact Gex and everyone has a higher poly count. Like Gex says "Amazon wasn't lying about my Roku being in high definition."
I think a slight redesign would be good for Gex, but Sushee′s was too cute and cartoony imo. I think a redesign should try to connect Gex to TV and tech more, such as a zap-shaped tail to represent electricity.
@@speedslider3913 Naw Gex’s design is already perfect as is, no need to change what isn’t broken. If they must just slightly modernize him and make him fit with modern hardware/technology.
Amazing video! One small thing about Gex's reference in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is that it's mentioned during Coco's flashback tape, which takes place in between Crash 1 and Crash 2.
Ah thanks! In all honesty I stopped playing Crash 4 before I reached that particular flashback tape so I didn't know Coco's stages take place at a different time. Good to know.

Gex 4: A-Live Gecko
Rezz takes control of every major streaming service in the world, and only Gex can stop his plans. However, there could be alternate endings.
1- Gex saves all the services, and gets free subscriptions for life.
2- Gex gets greedy, and takes over Rezz's plan for his own benefit.
3- Gex realizes that the multuple services aren't worth the price, and decides to just nuke everything.
4- Gex "accidentally" nukes evrything, and sets us all back to using physical media.
5- Gex stops giving a damn, let's Rezz have his way and locks himself on the channel with the "Adult" content.
So it's like Evangelion?

Gex 4: Streamed 'n' Served
Having played all the console titles and one of the portables, I love Gex and I would have loved for his series to keep going well into modern times; maybe even explore other genres beyond platformer. Considering Square Enix does hold the rights to the gecko, I would love a Gex RPG, because if the TV-loving lizard channel can jump between different show genres, why not game genres too? Thank you for covering all of this information, Johnny. I clicked on your video the minute I saw the title.

I was stunned with the news of Gex Jr. Loved Gex when I was younger (even though some of the darker lvls/bosses scared me) seeing Gex Jr got me all excited again. Its a true gift to the community that this prototype was shared. I have to say..because of it I so hope a modder could take Gex Jr and put him in a mod for any other game/fan project 🦎
Funny you should mention it scaring you...I found Gex terrifying at times! The Horror TV levels were obviously a bit unnerving but the bear in the murder mystery level scared the heck out of me as well.
@@JohnnyVector Haha, yes that the Horror tv creeped me out. Space lvls a lil bit but Mooshoo...thats dude yikes..his pig scream, big teeth and that laugh = Im going to turn off the game till I get some courage XD. As for Gex 3, I loved it more and wasn't scared one bit..though the pirate lvl was..uh pretty spoopy.

Suitably enough. They announced that Gex is making a comeback. With all three original titles being put together in a collection for modern day consoles.

Enter The Gecko was a fantastic PS1 game, enjoyed it a lot back in the day. I never played Deep Cover Gecko though, might have to fix that! Excellent video.
Fun fact, Gex’s original name was called gecko X, but it was shorten to just “Gex”

I just beat Gex 2 for the first time, and it is a surprisingly intricate and exciting 3D platformer. It's much better than I expected.
I really like this demo! It might be my favorite demo. I really like Gex, even though this is incredibly short, it feels correct for a Gex entry to me. I also think the fart ability is hilarious and if they were smart, they could use the physics of it for puzzles and stuff. I hope it gets used in a future Gex game. With the Gex Trilogy coming out, I believe he may get a new one soon since the series is being refreshed!

I'd dig seein' a new Gex game, so long as they stay far away from modern day media. I play games to escape bullshit like that, not to be reminded of it. Especially either old games from before media became the dumpster fire it is today, and even games that choose simply to be literally anything different from the rest of modern day media.
I love this demo! If there ever is another Gex game, he needs the fart button! It is hilarious! Use it as an attachment or a puzzle gimmick! It would be great! I hope he comes back! I love all of his games!
17:50 - I've been wondering for a long time whatever happened with that "open to developers" Eidos IP idea. It seemed a cool idea to utilise IPs that the IP holders certainly weren't using; did any games come about from that?
Fascinating to learn about this pitch, that if not resulting in a new Gex title, could of at least resulted in a 3rd party developer being supported and surviving... at least for some extra time.
Yes, Sushee Games did release a Fear Effect game. I know nothing about that series so I'm not sure how successful it was but I don't think it did particularly well, which might have put Eidos off the idea.
The answer to your first question is Balan Wonderworld. After that game bombed, the IP opportunities were pretty much shut down.
@@X2011racer As a fan of Balan Wonderworld, it hurts to admit that you are likely right, particularly for another platformer like Gex.
Never paid much mind to the Gex series, but the dev interview is fascinating. I grew up around the time when Newgrounds and other Flash-based sites were all the rage, and hearing that these very sites were the downfall of certain older companies is interesting to me, especially considering the state of Flash and these sites now. History repeats itself and all, I guess.
On a different note, the demo they've showcased is surprisingly competent for a company that originally worked in Flash-based edutainment. Even the aesthetics look great. A a shame they were too little too late.

Great video on this prototype! Thanks for getting the info on whose face is in the demo. Been meaning to ask that, but it kept slipping my mind... lol Also, from what I understand, the demo was not made on a Net Yaroze Playstation like Neal claims. According to SolidSnake11, after digging through the demo's files, it does not contain the same coding that you'd find in games made on a Net Yaroze. The demo was made with a traditional blue PS1 dev kit (which corroborates with what Neal told me, since he mentioned that the console was blue). Just a minor discrepancy. And thanks for the shout out! Keep up the quality Gex content!:P

SolidSnake11 is most likely* correct (meaning: "is correct"). However, I know the game began its development on the Yaroze.
Imagebuilder's developers had invested heavily in Steve Jobs' NEXT computers in the mid 90's. When artists and animators asked for Amiga or 3D workstations, there was no money left. We had to use the tools we had available to us at the time which were essentially Mac Quadras. The Yaroze was what most of us 'cut our teeth' on when trying to break out of the current development ecosystem.
I'm still sure the games development began on the Yaroze. Not sure what system it was eventually developed on to but the assets were likely bundled up and ported over from that earlier development.
@@NealBauer That makes sense. Development was probably switched over to the dev kit once the team got their hands on one and wanted to burn the demo to disc. Probably did it because it would make it easier to play the demo on a regular PS1. But that's just my guess! Thanks for clearing that up.:)
@@NealBauer I just left a comment saying it wasn't Net Yaroze on the cdrom, and that it was common for artist to use Net Yaroze because they were cheaper then test/debugging units... I know of a few people that showed Sony their work and got access to a pro dev kit via a publisher.

Gex is one of my most favorite games playing on the 3DO was awesome
I had a quick look at the CD image contents, there's nothing there that suggests it was made with a Net Yaroze PS1 development playstation, it was common for artist to use yaroze's because they were cheaper then test/debugging units, while programmers used the pro dev kit, I suspect that's what's happened here.
To go from flash games to a pro PS1 kit... even in 1999, that's a huge learning curve... there's more to this story
If we've got Crash and Spyro trilogies (one of which finally led to a good fourth entry) and even Bubsy freakin' Bobcat getting new games, I don't see why someone wouldn't try to make a fourth as a quick cash grab, at the very least.
Even Kao the Kangaroo made a return. I think I'd prefer Gex to stay dormant than go the way of Bubsy though; his latest game was just embarrassing. Not even enjoyable in an ironic sorta way.

Would love a remaster treatment the Crash and Spyro trilogy received though I don't know if Toys for Bob could work on it since ActBlizz owns them I think? Idk.

I grew up with gex and Unironically love the character. His games aren't bad and have a lot of charm, with him just being the cherry. Glad I found this.

Merge this (Gex Jr.), "Catastrophe Crow", and Crow's later source code updates. That would give the latter game an extra level, and help with building it up further as a game with a message of hope...
Gex Jr. seems to have been the result of copious amounts of unprotected Gex
Boy, it would have been really jarring going from the series' first T-rated game, with Agent Xtra portrayed by a Playboy model, to a fourth title (spinoff?) coming from a former edutainment company targeting the 8-12 demographic.
My guess is, had Gex Jr happened, it would have seen a late 2002 or early 2003 release on the PS1, probably going for $29.99 given that it would have been on last-gen hardware. Without Crystal Dynamics on board, and the title going to a company with no background in 3D games, I believe Gex Jr would have bombed hard in reviews. Maybe not quite Bubsy 3D levels of awful, but I could see it being remembered about as well as Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (IYKYK). Even though I want a Gex 4, it's probably for the best that this game never happened.

I like how literally every youtuber, when talking about first gex, only shows the graveyard level, because the game is this boring apparently.
The game is not boring it’s quite fun and unique for a 2D platformer plus a lot of Gex’s signature moves and mechanics originated in Gex 1.

Are there any ironic Gex fans really? I feel like the outdatedness of the humour and the innuendos were meant to be somewhat ironically funny.
I’m an unironic fan. Growing up playing Gex 2 and 3, I of course never knew what the jokes meant, but I loved the heck out of the games. The levels and music were unique and memorable, and the platforming aspect was fun. The dialogue just made Gex (the character) have a certain charm, even most of what he said made no sense.
Playing the games today is just a major nostalgia trip, which I’m all for.
