    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on real Saturn hardware. 3DO footage as well.
    2. I've only beaten this game one single time without cheats. The save/password system is just too unfriendly to tolerate.
    3. Much of the later game relies on insta-deaths for its challenge. No joke, it can be quite hard.
    4. Much of the extra clarity you'll see in the Saturn release mainly comes from the fact the base 3DO hardware could only output composite and s-video natively. The Saturn's RGB is superior.
    5. The 3DO game is still remarkable for hardware that was supposedly weak at 2D. Multiple layers of parallax, little slowdown, and lots of cool transparencies and particle style effects.
    6. The Saturn US version runs upwards of $50 or so. The Japanese version is actually more rare and quite a bit more expensive.

      @@isaiahconstante2206 though imagine CD players were just or more expensive in the 90s (even discmans were 200) and getting around 400-1000 dollars so a $700 gaming machine with CD music play back (with less quality) was decent. It was the same thing for the ps2 which was much cheaper than $700 DVD players so they could sell for more than normally for consoles. A Sony high end CD player likely cost double that of the psone.

    Hey there Sega Lord X. I bought a Japanese Saturn, Action Replay and even a Retro Bit Saturn wireless controller after seeing your channel for the first time a month ago. Growing up I used to work summers to get my gaming consoles and games. I then would sell older ones to get newer ones especially if the games were re-released on the newer console. I stopped selling my old gear when Sega stopped making consoles. I even still play Phantasy Star Online.. Online with people using a Wi-Fi pi for my Dreamcast to this day. I now collect all disk based games but had been skipping the Saturn all this time. Buying Japanese is certainly the way to go and I already have close to 20 games. Saturn was the only system I had ever skipped because the 32x actually cleared my saves on some of my games that weren't for it and the Sega CD didn't make me feel like much of a happy customer. The Dreamcast was where they got me for life and then it was their death. I had tossed the idea of getting a Saturn for years but your channel was the only one this in depth. A month later, I have a collection started 😁

    When it comes to 32-bit 2D platformers, I actually can't think of one that I like more then Gex. It is a real classic! Also, although you didn't like the password system, what I can say is that Gex is the only game I have ever played in which I created my own password and it worked! Yes! It appears (at least from that experience) that the passwords are not totally random, but rather, it may be possible to finagle a previously undiscovered password based on others that you have seen. That in itself made me absolutely love the password system, for what it's worth. Also, passwords don't just take you to a certain level, but open up all previous levels, meaning that if you use a password that unlocks the final boss, you will have also unlocked every other stage that you can go back to. So there are some benefits. But besides that, the gameplay, music, characters, and various environments all make this a very worthy game that is a blast to play! Oh yeah, and I don't remember a big difficulty problem, myself (and I played on the Saturn). I do remember beating it fair and square. It really is an excellent game!

    I'm excited to see this review! I had no idea that the Saturn version looks better than the 3DO version!
    It sucks that they couldn't be bothered to add a proper save version to the PS1 or Saturn. It's just odd that the 3DO had it...but maybe the game came out before everyone had memory cards, so they thought, "Why bother?"...but didn't the Saturn have internal memory? lol
    (regarding the fact that you needed to beat a boss or particular level to save...Super Mario World had that catch, but no one complains about that one! Especially when you can just go back to the easiest "Save level" thanks to hub worlds!)
    Anyways, great review as always!

    • @Silanda
      @Silanda 3 года назад +6

      @@jaymzx2587 3DO was interlaced 480i unless modded or the one Japanese model that had a switch to choose 240p. It rendered internally at 240p but applied a kind of anti-aliasing and output at 480i, leading to a softer image.
      Almost all ports from the 3DO to the Saturn and PS1 looked worse than the originals even if they ran better. On the PS1 that was partially due to having less flexible colour formats for storing graphics, meaning that the 3DO could, for example, use 64 colour sprites while the PS1 would either have to use 16 colour that look worse or 256 colour that perhaps take up too much RAM. AFAIK that shouldn't have been as much of a problem on the Saturn though, so I'm not sure why the Saturn ports exhibit the same problems or worse.

The sequels are still solid 3D platformers given their age as well having solid 2D ports to the game boy platforms. If the likes of Bubsy can get a succesfull reboot and sequel Gex seems like a given. Imagine Crystal Dynamics pouring just a fraction of the money they sank into Avengers into a Gex reboot.

    • @Turbulation1
      @Turbulation1 3 года назад

      @@Canadian_Gamer One could argue nothing about Gex being a 16 bit game since it has a lot of enhancements that couldn't be done on the SNES. I think it's impressive that Gex even was able to come out in the state it did because of the troubled development, like there were only like 2 artists for the game, so it's understandable why they couldn't just easily take advantage of greater colors than the SNES considering how much work it would take, and the devs even stated in an interview how much effort it takes to produce 2D 32 bit graphics. Also most Pre-Rendered games besides Donkey Kong Country don't hold up very well graphically today, so I wouldn't consider Pre-Rendered graphics to be a god send compared to Rayman or Gex.

    They replaced the save feature with passwords though the Saturn also has built in memory for save games. :-/

    Gex is 1 of those platformers that I never had a chance to try. The Saturn may not have had as many 3D platformers as Nintendo 64 and PS1, but it did have a few gems like Croc and this one as well, though I have to play Gex as I been wanting to try it for a long time.

    Totally agree about the save system. I've got it on the 3DO, and even there not being able to save at any time (at the beginning of every level, anyway) sapped my will to play it.

    I beat the PlayStation version as a kid, the biggest pain in the neck is trying to get all the secret remotes to get to the secret world.
    Edit:
    And also the Password system

    • @KenjiUmino
      @KenjiUmino Год назад

      yeah I hate it when games offer ONLY passwords ... I understand that using passwords instead of SRAM was a decision to make in the cartridge days as SRAM would have made the game more expensive ... but in the later half of the 90's ? ... on a console that has memory for gamesaves built in ?? ... like the saturn ??? ... there is NO excuse to not use savegames ... even less so if it's a port from another platform and the original game already had it.
      There are even a couple of PC games that ONLY do this password crap ... like ... c'mon ... it's a PC ... you got a big old hard drive in there, dont'cha ???

    Like many other people at the time, I didn’t care for 2D graphics anymore. I’ve come to appreciate this game a lot more nowadays. 🦎

      Just because something didnt blow up like sonic or mario doesnt mean it was a fail. Think about how little stuff blows up like that and how many times stuff like this happens instead. Its a success if it was a fun game and you made some money on it. Not everything has to be a raging success.

    The music is as good as Donkey Kong Country, though I know that being on a cartridge 16 bit system also makes DKC's soundtrack more impressive. Likely influenced by it and had a better system to work with to get the same effect.

    Always wanted this game as a kid, it blew me away seeing it on the 3DO. Finally picked it up along with a 3DO some years back. Never got into it. It's solid, but nothing special enough to hold my interest. I'd recommend a game like DKC or Sonic & Knuckles over this any day.

    I really enjoy the first game. It bridges the gap of 16 bit and 32 bit perfectly. Things got ugly in 3D for poor Gex
