  • After months on the road we're finally back on Clearlake! Come along as we explore the lake, build patterns, and catch fish! Matt utilizes a buzzbait, frog, and toad to catch a fish in the grass on a hot Summer day. Many anglers avoid fishing in the heat but if you know where to look there are big fish to be caught!
    Catching fish consistently in Summer requires an understanding of how and why they position. Shallow water bass love to be close to cover. A consistent food source is also key. In most lakes, if you can find baitfish and grass in the same area, you're around bass. This morning Matt hit the water at first light. He already knew where to find grass but the baitfish remained a mystery. By getting out early he was able to quickly locate active birds searching for a meal.
    It took time to get the first bite but the bird activity confirmed the presence of baitfish and ultimately the presence of bass. Whenever you're on the water pay close attention to nature, it's clues can really shorten your search time. Once Matt located fish he used a combination of baits to get consistent bites from bass that were positioned to ambush prey as it passed by the grass beds.
    Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment Matt used to catch his fish. We've included color recommendations for the various baits, the exact combos Matt was fishing with, and even a budget-minded alternative. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

    There's people that fish, and there's people that fish like it's a sport. Matt makes it look so easy. Swift, efficient, and confident casts. Follows through to the side of the boat. Quickly changes rods for a 2nd chance. It's like the fastest you'll see someone work but not actually really move around lot.

    Where are the summer fishing in the south videos? You all are awesome but the water is way different and I'm just curious if it's a mistake or obviously going north every summer to promote summer tactics. How about a high pressured less popular lake in Texas 90* water. That's what I've been waiting for....peace and love Guys

      The water in this video was 86 degrees. There are some changes coming in the next few weeks you're really going to like 😉 Stick with us a bit longer.

      I meant no Illness toward you brother. Y'all are great!! I suck. Determined but loosing. I'm 2 years from a boat and it's harder than shore fishing for me for what ever reason I cant find a pattern. I can pattern all over the US from shore but this boat is a whole different thing....thanx for the feedback I wasn't nay saying by any means. Peace

    Just got to say you guys are terrible influences. I go out and buy a ton of baits inspired by you two guys, and it never fails you show me more baits I need to buy LOL. Did y'all catch any big ones on Lake Chickamauga with the little Allen bully wa?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад +1

      Ha! Sorry! We didn't get any monsters on it at Chick. They were really keyed in on the smaller baitfish last time we were there and the smaller frogs seemed to make a big difference. Give us a little time, that answer will change 😃

    Matt, I’m trying to become better at fishing deeper structure. What do you look for/how deep do you set out when you know you’ll be throwing topwater?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад +1

      It totally varies depending on water clarity. In this video I was fishing 2-10+ feet of water. In a crystal clear reservoir with no cover Tim and I aren't afraid to fish the color line out over 100+ feet of water. Knowing where that color line is, is key.

    So when you’re throwing a frog I’m sure you’re using braid but do you have any backing so the braid doesn’t slip? Should I put backing everytime I spool a reel up with braid?????

    • @norcal_angler5310
      @norcal_angler5310 4 года назад +1

      Yes always put backing underneath braid. Or else you will have ghost drag

    • @willis4734
      @willis4734 4 года назад

      Saves money in the long run doing a backing for braid. I do it for every rod i use braid on.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад

      Yes, always back the reel. We don't actually use line as backing, a few wraps of electrical tape around the spool will work sufficiently as well. 👍

    So how close does the grass need to get to the surface before you’d use a frog?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад +1

      It really doesn't. They'll come up and eat a frog in completely open water. Its a different look than what they're used to seeing in pressured open water fisheries. 👍

    If you had to choose a shakyhead spinning setup no matter the price range what would you choose?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад +1

      My absolute favorite spinning rod for a shaky head is my GLX 852S. I assume the NRX would be one step nicer but I wouldn't vouch for it until I've put real time into the model and I've only fished the NRX in the 852 casting version. Here is the GLX... bit.ly/2A6HH3O

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад

      It depends on which rod, they're all 7:1 or 8:1. If you open the video description we include gear ratio with the linked reel. For the Shimanos a 7:1 is called "HG" and an 8:1 is called "XG".

    • @tacticalbassin

      Yes we do. When its really thick it can slow the bite but usually they hunt right through/under it.

    So I’m new to the frog wagon and so far I’ve had excellent luck but I seem to only get bites very early and right at dark. As soon as the sun comes up the frog bite stops for me. Do I need to continue trying to throw top water even later into the morning?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  4 года назад +1

      I would certainly explore the midday options. Sometimes the bite will shut down after the morning feeding frenzy then pick up again a few hours later and last throughout the middle of the day.
