My old man (for his 70th bday) and I were guided by Gareth on our first trip to NZ last year - had a blast! This dude is a gun, we learned heaps and came away with great memories. If any of the comments are dreaming of a NZ trip, as Molly says, “do yourself a favour”... Congrats on another great vid G.
the original brood stock for NZ rainbows were trapped in the Lardeau River on the north end of Kootenay Lake British Columbia in the 1950's. my father worked for fisheries and oceans when the order for eggs and sperm to be transported out of Spokane Washington came in. the traps are still there and the same Gerard Strain Rainbows are a big prize today. my biggest is 37 pounds. dad always wanted to travel to NZ and catch a few but it's now on my bucket list when we can all travel again. tight lines and cold beer.
Don't sell yourself short, Gareth. That's a great vid...really captures the conditions. And that is one ripper of a rainbow! I would have loved to have seen the one that got away...but I bet that makes two of us 🤣
I am so far beyond jealous mate. 20,25,30lb Trout! The biggest Trout i ever caught, 5.4lb, would be nothing but bait in that water. What an amazing and incredibly special place N.Z is. As always thank you for sharing this with us and tight lines.
Just awesome vid!!! The more i see,the more i want to visit your beautiful country and fly fish for bows. Just spectacular work and kudos to everyone for bringing us some fantastic sights. And yes...the snow makes everything all the sweeter!!! God bless
Just incredible and humongous Rainbows in NZ. My largest trout on a fly was 8 pounds in the States and that almost sounds like a disappoint to you guys! LOL Vids are amazing!
That was awesome! What monster rainbows. I remember those kind of days in the Olympic Peninsula in the winter looking for steelhead. My hands couldn't take the cold like that anymore today but thanks for reminding me. Love watching you fish.
hey. love your videos. Just wondering if you ever keep a fish to eat. I love a good feed of trout. i think if I was a fisherman of your calibre I would be taking a fish or two home to eat each trip.
I am wondering. Salmons are very clever, they normally know, that there are no flies in winter...? To my experience they wouldnt even take a may fly in september
These fish are huge! Let’s see the tail of these beauties. You keep covering it up with your back hand when you show the camera. Turn your hand over so we can see the full length of these hogs!
@@Trowter But they are descendants of steelhead stock from California that was introduced to NZ around 1900. So they migrate and spawn with the same instincts as steelhead. The ones Gareth fishes for in Taupo region run up rivers in winter to spawn from the lake which is their "sea".

Great video! You have the best thumbnails! What program do you use for them?
Wow.
When do you guys have closed season for trout? In Europe, all trout are closed during winter due to spawning. Cheers
F me the disturbance that fish made on the surface! Like a fresh water kingi!
Some info about fly, and how you fish it would be nice :)
What was the song when you caught that 20lb fish?
I know it’s a giant fish when I hear you react that way! Great fishing as always
I am wondering. Salmons are very clever, they normally know, that there are no flies in winter...? To my experience they wouldnt even take a may fly in september

No .. it’s Jamaica. Temperature is 96 degrees (in the shade)
I’m going down next month and tips on rivers I should try and fly choices. Really want to get fish on the fly not bottom bouncing.
