Man, this is priceless. Seeing these two legends together on the same video. Thanks for the upload man. RIP Guru one of the best yet, RIP DR Donald Bird
we all know how we got here...... because we wanted to find this. good to know you guys are still walking this world. blessing, in spirit we connect like our man guru blessed us with his lyrics
It’s crazy, neither Guru nor Donald Byrd is alive anymore. Ironically, Guru passed before Dr. Byrd and at a much earlier age (at 48 in 2010. Byrd passed 2013 at 80). RIP to these two pioneers.
It should be noted that Dr. Donald Byrd (1932-2013) was one of the great jazz trumpeters of the 20th century, with dozens of classic records under his belt spanning the 1950’s on thru the 1980’s. Hip-hop has extensively sampled his jazz/funk fusion recordings from the 70s. And speaking of which, Byrd was - alongside Herbie Hancock, Max Roach, Quincy Jones, and Miles Davis, one of the first jazz musicians to embrace hip-hop, collaborating and touring extensively with Guru throughout most of the 90s. In addition to his prolific music career, Dr. Byrd was also a noted educator who obtained multiple degrees from and in turn taught at some of the most prestigious universities. As a professor at the HBCU Howard University, he actually inaugurated that school’s jazz studies program. And finally, not too many know, but Dr. Byrd suffered Bell’s Palsy which is partial paralysis of the facial muscles. This made playing trumpet far more difficult than it already is and at times it did get in the way of his playing, especially towards the end. Regardless, he leaves behind a massive catalogue of great music featuring some of the most arresting trumpet work you’ll ever hear.
I recently saw a short "documentary" about the history of Hip Hop & Jazz, NOT a single word about GURU & Jazzmatazz was mentioned. The channels response to the comments was, that they could not cover everything is just 20 minutes. Really? What an insult to GURU, Hip Hop & Jazz.
Fakk I had the change to see GURU´s Jazzmatazz on tour just before he passed away...but I didn´t have the money to go.................RIP Master GURU!!!!!
